To be upset that my "friend" has told me off for getting a disabled person's railcard

cottonwoolbrain · 19/02/2024 17:39

... because I'm not in a wheelchair and don't have trouble walking so I don't need one. Oh and apparently I've got a well paid job and she doesn't see why people should have to pay extra to subsidise me.

We went on a trip at the weekend and she saw me using the card and took the opportunity to lecture me - lots of other people on the train were clearly listening and taking it all in.

In fact as she very well knows I have epilepsy with grand mal seizures and absence seizures (effectively brief blackouts) and dyspraxia. Driving is simply not an option as there is a high chance of me killing myself or someone else. Taking the train, taxis, buses all the time is expensive and time consuming. After a seizure I'm usually quite disorientated and confused...

But according to her I should get off my arse and learn to drive

I didn't enjoy the trip and came home and cried... I thought about giving up the card but I've decided to give her up instead.. wish I could give up the epilepsy too Sad

You've reminded me i need to renew my disabled rail card travel pass

i love ❤️ travelling on trains along as there is only one or two changeovers,

@cottonwoolbrain

You are being responsible and contentious by not driving,

enjoy your travels on train

not all disabilities are as obvious as mine,
using a walking stick cause of Rumertoid & OestoAthritis

having a disability as you have got,

is exposing making you aware that your friend is not a good one...

wronginalltherightways · 19/02/2024 20:39

Your friend is not a friend, OP. She sounds absolutely horrible. YOu will be well rid of such an ignorant, nasty person in your life.

Ewock · 19/02/2024 20:41

Your ex friend is a complete idiot. Railcards are not easy to get and you have to supply evidence. Besides that she knows why you have it and still felt it was ok to treat you like that! She's disgusting.
She would hate me, my dh works for a rail company so we and our dc have rail cards and save around 70%, my few friends that know have never said anything negative.

cerisepanther73 · 19/02/2024 20:43

@cottonwoolbrain

Sorry i think 🤔 I misspelt a word

Should have been conscious of safety awareness

Not contentious *

XenoBitch · 19/02/2024 21:04

Your friend sounds awful.

There are also young person rail cards, student rail cards, senior rail cards, and rails cards for couples (friends/family/whatever) that travel together a lot.

Is she pissed about "subsidising" them too?

lemmein · 19/02/2024 21:09

Your friend sounds a bit thick tbh. Advising someone who has grand mal seizures to drive? What could possibly go wrong 🙄

I couldn't be friends with someone so ignorant and stupid - well done you for ditching her!

lemmein · 19/02/2024 21:13

SomewhereInTheMIdlands · 19/02/2024 20:31

You are in the right. This is how society should work. Some people are even jealous of what benefits even disabled people get.

Yep! They begrudge them the benefits, jealous of any perceived 'perks' - not jealous of the disability that made them eligible though!

I bet your friend watches GBNews OP🤦🏻‍♀️

Meowandthen · 19/02/2024 21:14

She’s a nasty bitch. given the options, I am sure you’d prefer perfect health to a railcard.

A shame you didn’t loudly reply that you have epilepsy etc to shut her up publicly but you are right to bin her. Her actions are not those of a friend.

shes done you a favour because now you know she’s not your friend. Disability comes in all kinds of forms and it’s just not her business to decide if you are eligible for one or not. If you have seizures (as you rightly said) you literally can’t drive, the dvla won’t let you. So she can shut up. I’m sorry she upset you, but you have done nothing wrong. ❤️

LadyKenya · 19/02/2024 21:18

Tessisme · 19/02/2024 20:05

I wasn't suggesting @LadyKenya that I have ever thought that about anyone myself. I meant the OP's so called friend. I could have worded it better. I have plenty of experience of people judging and thinking that disabilities and illnesses in my family are not real and am sick to death of having to explain and defend.

In that case, I beg your pardon. I misinterpreted your post.

redalex261 · 19/02/2024 21:20

What an utterly horrible cow! Of course epilepsy is a very good reason for having a disabled person railcard/bus pass or any other transport concession - it’s to stop you killing morons like her on the fecking road! Cut this bitch from your life, tell everyone why you're doing it into the bargain.

Notateacheranymore · 19/02/2024 21:21

You are clinically unable to drive, does she not comprehend that?!

If the subject should come up again, remind the rude person that not all disabilities are visible or, my personal favourite, tell them to fuck off and mind their own business.

Your choice.

CuriousW · 19/02/2024 21:23

I am so sorry to hear that.. I wasn’t able to drive for a while because of seizures and with all the extra planning for public transport (which isn’t even always that reliable!), I am pleased to hear you at least get a discount when you don’t have any choice but to use it! Your friend sounds horrible!

Dominoeffecter · 19/02/2024 21:26

What a cow! I think if you are disqualified from driving through no fault of your own your travel should be free.

alloalloallo · 19/02/2024 21:26

I thought about giving up the card but I've decided to give her up instead

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Well done!

My daughter has a disabled bus pass and I’ve had similar comments from people. She also has seizures and is absolutely not allowed to drive.

I’ve got sick of explaining to people tbh, we applied for something, submitted evidence, the council decided she was eligible any issued the pass. Everyone else can fuck right off!

Runnerinthenight · 19/02/2024 21:27

She's an absolute bitch! Get rid!

You are absolutely entitled to have that card x

Happyher · 19/02/2024 21:29

My son has a hidden disability and has a railcard. He satisfies the criteria and so do you. She’s probably just miffed that she paid more than you

Wellhellooooodear · 19/02/2024 21:30

I wouldn't even say that to someone I didn't like, let alone a friend

Supersimkin2 · 19/02/2024 21:30

Well done OP.

BonheursTrousers · 19/02/2024 21:31

She’ll be pissed off, I didn’t know about this card so will now apply for it, I’m registered disabled - can walk with crutches but cannot drive due to one leg being numb and weak. 😏 thanks @cottonwoolbrain idiot friend 😂

Tatumm · 19/02/2024 21:34

Oh @cottonwoolbrain - we are all behind you. 💐

Your so called friend is very out of order. If it would help you to feel better about this, perhaps send her a link to this thread.

Mumma1822 · 19/02/2024 21:36

I’m so sorry that this has happened, sending my love. What a silly cow! I’m glad your keeping your card you are well within your right to use it I hope you keep doing so without any guilt because there shouldn't be any. Xx

Birdseyetrifle · 19/02/2024 21:36

It's a bloody railcard, how on earth can anyone get upset about someone having one of these because they have epilepsy, what an utter cow!

I can get a railcard just for being a veteran or I have one just for having a child. Neither of these impact my life really in the way your disability does. I am glad you've ditched her and I hope you tell her why, awful woman.

What a nasty person your so called friend sounds.

First, to even think this about a person she supposedly considers a friend.

Second, to consider that your disability is not sufficient to deserve a railcard when it is clear that you cannot drive for medical reasons.

Third, to imagine that she knows better than the medical experts that set these rules, according to which you deserve a railcard.

Fourth, to make a fuss about it in public, embarrassing for you and for many of them.

Fifth, to go about her day as if nothing had happened, either not realising or not caring that her cruel comments had crushed you.

And finally, back to the start, to even think this of a person she supposedly considers a friend.

As well as being nasty, she also sounds deeply stupid if she thinks that an epileptic with grand mal seizures should get off their arse and learn to drive.

Better off without her in your life. You made a good call.

Lwrenn · 19/02/2024 21:37

@cottonwoolbrain ah hen, she isn't a friend, she's too unintelligent to have you as a pal if that is her opinion.

I'm sorry you had this said to you, it's proper infuriated me this. 🤬

I wish we could put your epilepsy in the bin with her and all, it's scary and horrid and nobody should have it. I hope your epilepsy is super controlled and if I made the rules anybody with epilepsy would be given completely free national travel and every single high school student would be given comprehensive epilepsy training, it's (very sadly!) Really quite a common thing people have to live with, why the fuck would we make the lives of people with epilepsy more difficult? Idiot your ex friend is, utter idiot.
