Horrendous pain in my side, but otherwise feel fine?

Not sure if I’m being a total hypochondriac at all, but today I woke up drenched in sweat with some pain in my upper left abdomen, right under my ribs. I’ve felt okay all day, eating and drinking normally, no vomiting, but the pain has been worsening to the point even slightly moving makes it worse. It also hurts when touching the area. I’ve not been injured or done anything that could have caused this pain, and it doesn’t feel muscular. I’ve literally just been in tears with it!

I called the doctor earlier and the receptionist said there were no appointments and to try to call back tomorrow. The pain is bad but because I am otherwise okay in myself I’d feel stupid going to A&E. But I also don’t know if I can wait until
the morning!

Any advice?!

I would go to A and E, to be on the safe side.

catelynjane · 23/01/2024 19:24

I would go and get checked out. That's not normal.

Theunamedcat · 23/01/2024 19:26

Ring 111 I think it might be your gallbladder

StarsandStones · 23/01/2024 19:27

I'd go to hospital. Can someone bring you? Take some things to keep you warm/comfortable, bottle of water, telephone charged etc.

HowAboutTheLittleSpoon · 23/01/2024 19:30

Sounds like a gallbladder attack. Don't believe Google saying it's only in your right side, mine were in centre and I thought I was having a heart attack.

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 19:38

Sorry I forgot to mention I have already had both my appendix and gallbladder removed!

Kidney stones?

CharlotteMakepeace · 23/01/2024 19:44

I was going to suggest your spleen but if you are confident you have suffered no injury....

Do get yourself seen to asap.

Unexplainable pain of this degree is in my opinion a medical emergency.

Go to A&E. Don't wait for 111 to call you, they took 11 hrs to call me back.

Willyoujustbequiet · 23/01/2024 19:49

Have you had any viral infection recently?

Biscuitsneeded · 23/01/2024 19:51

Kidney stone? Ovarian cyst? If you can't see a doctor I would brave A and E...

Mistlebough · 23/01/2024 19:52

I know someone with same symptoms (no other) and was def serious: bowel cancer affecting spleen so get checked asap. Good luck OP

LadeOde · 23/01/2024 19:52

Go straight to A&E!

MissWatercress · 23/01/2024 19:54

Don't panic, it sounds exactly like pleurisy. Agonising but will only last a couple of days. Doctor just suggests paracetamol and ibuprofen. Worth getting checked though.

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 20:02

Thanks everyone I called 111 and they’ve sent a lower emergency ambulance but could be hours - I can make myself to A&E which I told them but they said wait?

It’s below my ribs not underneath sorry, so definitely not pleurisy.

Sounds like gallbladder pain, but could be any number of things. With that much pain - especially as it is worsening - you need to seek immediate medical attention.

She has said she doesn't have gallbladder.

@Nctaxq keep us posted OP. Hope they get to you soon and you get sorted. Thinking of you 💐

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 20:20

Should I just call back and make my own way in? I told them I feel really silly having an ambulance come out but they insisted I wait for it rather than take myself in even though that could be hours.

Sorry, totally drip feeding here - last one I promise! The pain worsens when I open my bowels, too.

Any chance you could be pregnant? Upper abdo pain can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, very serious if so. Hope it's not though

Willyoujustbequiet · 23/01/2024 20:30

Your spleen can enlarge from a recent infection.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 20:30

@Nctaxq hmm, tricky one. If you go in via ambulance you'll be seen straight away. If you go in yourself, you could wait hours in A&E. Try and hang on if you can, if you're getting worse, ring 999 again and tell them, they'll re prioritise

Definitelylivedin · 23/01/2024 20:30

I had this last week. Went to the doctor who suspected shingles but couldn't be sure until the rash came out. Low and behold the next day I had a small rash which had spread right round my side.

The pain is unbelievable. I never knew shingles could feel like this. The antivirals have worked on the rash an the opiates help with the pain.

Good luck

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 21:01

thanks everyone. I’ve decided to go in on my
own because it’s worsening so much and paracetamol isn’t touching it. Called the ambulance people and they said it would be quicker for me to take myself in if I can! Not far from there now. Predicting it’s going to be incredibly busy
