Horrendous pain in my side, but otherwise feel fine?

Not sure if I’m being a total hypochondriac at all, but today I woke up drenched in sweat with some pain in my upper left abdomen, right under my ribs. I’ve felt okay all day, eating and drinking normally, no vomiting, but the pain has been worsening to the point even slightly moving makes it worse. It also hurts when touching the area. I’ve not been injured or done anything that could have caused this pain, and it doesn’t feel muscular. I’ve literally just been in tears with it!

I called the doctor earlier and the receptionist said there were no appointments and to try to call back tomorrow. The pain is bad but because I am otherwise okay in myself I’d feel stupid going to A&E. But I also don’t know if I can wait until
the morning!

Any advice?!

I had this and it was shingles. The pain was something else. Horrific. It went on for weeks and I could barely walk, dragging my leg on the side where the rash was. The anti virals didn’t work for me but definitely get them if it is shingles.

Hope you get seen soon and you're ok

@Nctaxq hmm, tricky one. If you go in via ambulance you'll be seen straight away. If you go in yourself, you could wait hours in A&E. Try and hang on if you can, if you're getting worse, ring 999 again and tell them, they'll re prioritise

You won't be seen any quicker going via ambulance

ilovebreadsauce · 23/01/2024 21:08

Daughter haf this before xmas = horrendously painful, but turned out just to be swollen lymph nodes

Thanks everyone I called 111 and they’ve sent a lower emergency ambulance but could be hours - I can make myself to A&E which I told them but they said wait?

It’s below my ribs not underneath sorry, so definitely not pleurisy.

Hope all goes well. Let us know how you get on. Big hugs.

Just got here, it’s the busiest I’ve seen it in a long time!

Best wishes that you will be seen to soon and it's something easily treatable.

Ilovelurchers · 23/01/2024 21:26

Good luck. Might be kidney stones? Depending where exactly they occur the can be HORRENDOUSLY painful so I feel for you OP. But you are in the right place. Try and relax as much as you can. Have you got a drink and a book, etc?

That's not correct I'm afraid. You don't get seen quicker just because an ambulance has transported you to a&e. You are triaged like everyone else there.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 21:32

@Princesspollyyy apologies, I always thought it was. I stand corrected. Good to know for future ref too x

LemonLinnet · 23/01/2024 21:39

Good luck, OP. Hope the wait isn’t too long.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 23/01/2024 21:40

All the best, I hope you'll be seen by a dr soon.

SingsongSu · 23/01/2024 21:44

The way to be seen quicker is if a doctor calls an ambulance for you, these are prioritised. If you diall the Out of hours GP and they think you need to goto A&E they will call an ambulance for you.

SeriouslyStressed · 23/01/2024 21:54

@LadeOde OP is already there now

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 21:55

@LadeOde thanks, makes sense. That's how I went in before so just assumed that was quicker for all cases.

Pigeonqueen · 23/01/2024 21:56

Hope you get seen and sorted quickly. 💐

LuluBlakey1 · 23/01/2024 21:58

I had pain like this and it was acute pancreatitis. It was worse than giving birth.

janicegarvey · 23/01/2024 22:03

Hope you're okay op Flowers

NerdyBird · 23/01/2024 22:06

my dh had similarish pain yesterday and 111 called him an ambulance. Had heart checks etc all ok but kidney stone was suggested as a reason for him too. Hope your wait is not too long.

yarnwitch · 23/01/2024 22:06

This happened to me and it was diverticulitis. Literally came on overnight exactly as you describe. If it is you will need antibiotics

I didn’t realise shingles was so painful.

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 22:20

Haven’t been triaged yet. It really is so hectic and a nurse came out to say that if you had to ‘pay for A&E half of those attending wouldn’t be here, there’s always private GPs you can see’. I get it, but seems a bit out of touch considering that is not financially accessible for most.
