Horrendous pain in my side, but otherwise feel fine?

Not sure if I’m being a total hypochondriac at all, but today I woke up drenched in sweat with some pain in my upper left abdomen, right under my ribs. I’ve felt okay all day, eating and drinking normally, no vomiting, but the pain has been worsening to the point even slightly moving makes it worse. It also hurts when touching the area. I’ve not been injured or done anything that could have caused this pain, and it doesn’t feel muscular. I’ve literally just been in tears with it!

I called the doctor earlier and the receptionist said there were no appointments and to try to call back tomorrow. The pain is bad but because I am otherwise okay in myself I’d feel stupid going to A&E. But I also don’t know if I can wait until
the morning!

Any advice?!

BP being elevated on arrival/in healthcare settings can be typical/not really indicative of anything more then it's stressful/anxiety inducing. In terms of elevation concerning BPs are over 180/100 so yours isn't really worrying. The heart rate is more than I would expect though so if that is staying around 120 should prompt consideration as to why it's that high.

Your main symptom that is concerning to me is how tender you sound to touch in the region so certainly appropriate to repeat the examination as not settled. If not getting anywhere/unsure of cause I personally would really persist getting an appointment with the GP as in my experience would be a bit more thorough in assessment/tests they'd order to consider other diagnosis.

Good call on making your own way in not waiting for the ambulance! That's refreshing. I'm a Paramedic and 111 do this so often - absolutely if I'd have spoken to you on the phone with severe abdominal pain tender to touch without obvious cause I'd have been keen for an A&E review, but what's the benefit in making you sit there and wait x hours for the ambulance to drive you 15minutes to the hospital - if it were something serious then why on Earth would you want to delay your arrival!!!!

Meanwhile ambulance crews get tied up for hours transporting patients that could have easily been driven by family/taxi etc resulting in hours+ wait for those who are too sick to make own way. I've attached some recent response times averaged over a week for my region - averaging 8 minutes 20s to respond to cardiac arrests, nearly 40minutes for 'heart attack', stroke and sepsis/meningitis like calls, then 2hrs+ for things like broken legs/elderly fall can't get up ?injury. Then look at those 90th centiles!!!! Genuinely it's so bad if my dad had a stroke I'd drive him to hospital myself wouldn't tolerate such a huge delay to time critical treatment.

Are you a doctor?

JiraffDeSaki · 25/01/2024 21:39

Gosh poor old you, sounds awful. I hope you get more answers this time, if bloods aren't giving much info other than raised CRP I guess they need to scan you.

I once had horrible griping pain in the centre of my abdomen, went on for 3 days - similar to you, didn't feel ill but was sweating with the pain. Saw GP who arranged bloods the next day (showed raised CRP) and booked an ultrasound - which happened 6 weeks later so I was fine by then, scan totally worthless! Never did find out what it was, but it returns again here and there - I've also had my gallbladder out, and the pain is right where they clip off the bile duct... 🤔

SleepyRich · 25/01/2024 21:40

@Shiningstarr Nope, I'm a Paramedic.

Fitandfree · 25/01/2024 21:51

BP and pulse can be elevated in pain too

Newbalancebeam · 25/01/2024 22:09

Could it be an adhesion linked with a previous surgery?

Tilllly · 25/01/2024 22:11

Could it be an adhesion linked with a previous surgery?

Would that have come on suddenly?

BP and pulse can be elevated in pain too

Of course, but it sounded like the OP was stating their arrival BP being on the high side being an indicator for serious illness.

Shania7788 · 25/01/2024 22:41

With pain in the side, sweating and blood in urine I would have thought kidney infection, but that should have been picked up by the dipstick test. How bizarre that blood in urine is reassuring. Hope you get some answers soon!

Cattymonster · 25/01/2024 22:55

Good luck OP. I hope they find the answer and get you on the path to recovery Flowers
