Horrendous pain in my side, but otherwise feel fine?

Not sure if I’m being a total hypochondriac at all, but today I woke up drenched in sweat with some pain in my upper left abdomen, right under my ribs. I’ve felt okay all day, eating and drinking normally, no vomiting, but the pain has been worsening to the point even slightly moving makes it worse. It also hurts when touching the area. I’ve not been injured or done anything that could have caused this pain, and it doesn’t feel muscular. I’ve literally just been in tears with it!

I called the doctor earlier and the receptionist said there were no appointments and to try to call back tomorrow. The pain is bad but because I am otherwise okay in myself I’d feel stupid going to A&E. But I also don’t know if I can wait until
the morning!

Any advice?!

To all saying check for UTI, they checked urine and only showed blood no infection markers and blood test infection markers were also low. A GP would just do another urine dip which was already clear (apart from blood). They shouldn’t treat for a UTI without positive markers.

Oh just saw your update! 😂

There was a thread on here a couple of months back about a child with (IIRC) similar sounding pain and they were eventually diagnosed with mesenteric lymphadenitis - basically swollen glands in the abdomen due to a viral infection.

Was gonna say the same to. Think mesenteric adenitis is very common in kids but assume adults can get it too.

That’s actually not true. NICE guidelines now state that pain and blood in urine should mean antibiotics are issued. You can actually order antibiotics to treat UTIs online now so can completely bypass all of this anyway - Superdrug and Boots offer this as do others.

(I have long term bladder issues - diagnosed with interstitial cystitis aged 14, now 43 and under the care of 2 specialist relating to it all - I’ve been on daily long term antibiotics since 14).

Its a well known thing that the tests the NHS use aren’t comprehensive or sensitive enough to pick up many UTIs.

@Sunsetandsmiles I currently have a UTI (confirmed by lab culture) and have normal bloods. CRP is completely normal. My main symptom was blood in urine. You can definitely have an infection and normal bloods.

YukoandHiro · 24/01/2024 22:12

Gallbladder, appendix, quite a few things that should be checked out today

Read the thread, she hasn't got a gallbladder!!!

mooncloud1 · 24/01/2024 22:31

@Nctaxq I could have written this! Had these exact symptoms, sweating, so much pain I passed out, felt awful and worse when opening bowels. CRP raised, blood in urine. Diagnosed with gastroenteritis! Took a month to feel back to normal. Had repeat bloods done and all ok now. But never felt so unwell.

Read the thread, she hasn't got a gallbladder!!!

However, quite a % of people after gall bladder removal continue to produce gall stones because sometimes part of the gall bladder is left behind and continues to produce the bile and stones.

TheSnakeCharmer · 24/01/2024 23:00

Do not be afraid to go back and get a second opinion if still in pain or it's getting worse. Never feel as though you have been seen, therefore there's nothing more that you can do. Conditions can change in people when they are unwell. You are the expert of yourself so listen to that inner niggle. My husband was fobbed off once with 'it's a virus' and he ended up on life support (they didn't do any bloods or test his blood pressure though). Unfortunately A&E is the last place that you want to be when unwell.

throughgrittedteeth · 24/01/2024 23:10

I'm confused why they haven't even suggested it could be pancreatitis. I know it's mostly brought on my excessive alcohol but I have a colleague who had it after having her gallbladder removed.

scaredofff · 25/01/2024 13:39

Aw op I'm worried for you. I know the feeling you're describing of just knowing something is more wrong than it seems
You know how you usually feel day to day and know it's different to how you're feeling now so something isn't as normal as they may say.
If I was still not feeling right in a day or two I would be getting checked again

Nctaxq · 25/01/2024 17:45

Still in pain today and tummy is hurting too. Having quite frequent bowel movements which is making it worse. But I still feel like I’m not dying and everything is ok. Just not sure how this could be a viral illness when it is just the pain I’m struggling with and there’s no way I’ve caused it myself.

I'd ring 111 again if you don't improve. Especially if the pain is spreading. 💐

Yep, this sounds exactly like what I had. Couldn't believe I felt that ill with a virus.
Saying that, don't be afraid to go back. I saw the GP twice.

Nctaxq · 25/01/2024 18:00

@mooncloud1 Thats the thing I don’t feel ill. Looser and more frequent bowel movements but that’s literally it. The pain is bad and it makes me feel sick to touch, but otherwise I feel completely normal, that’s why I’m unsure it’s a virus.

Op, could it be a kidney stone??

Food poisoning? Campylobacter? Ask about dropping a stool sample at the GP?

I had H Pylori several years back and had constant tummy pain. Needed hard core antibiotics to get rid.

I'm only suggesting because of your bowls.

Nctaxq · 25/01/2024 18:27

I’m 100% sure it’s not food poisoning & I only get nauseous when I push down on the area. I’m able to do some but not all of my everyday activities due to the pain. I definitely feel there’s something wrong, I’ve never had pain like it. But I really don’t feel the usual ‘unwell’. No temp, no vomiting, not
excessive diarrhoea, just increased. I had a couple of episodes of heavy sweating but that’s it. Otherwise I’m tired and I have had no relief at all from the pain in 3 days despite pain killers.

This sounds like my exact symptoms for when I had appendicitis. They should've given you an ultrasound at least.

Princesspollyyy · 25/01/2024 19:29

I agree in that it sounds like it could be appendicitis. Did they not give you an ultrasound of your abdomen?

Justkeepsplashing · 25/01/2024 19:35

I have these symptoms when my Diverticulitis flares after trigger foods

Nctaxq · 25/01/2024 20:13

@PureAmazonian I’ve had my gallbladder & appendix out already. I agree they should have scanned even for peace of mind :(

111 have sent me to emergency care center (happy because the ED) was absolutely hectic. BP back to 159/69 - like it was on Tuesday, heart rate 120

So glad you have called 111 and are somewhere. BP and HR are elevated, something is not right.

Really hope you get some answers x
