Horrendous pain in my side, but otherwise feel fine?

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 19:21

Not sure if I’m being a total hypochondriac at all, but today I woke up drenched in sweat with some pain in my upper left abdomen, right under my ribs. I’ve felt okay all day, eating and drinking normally, no vomiting, but the pain has been worsening to the point even slightly moving makes it worse. It also hurts when touching the area. I’ve not been injured or done anything that could have caused this pain, and it doesn’t feel muscular. I’ve literally just been in tears with it!

I called the doctor earlier and the receptionist said there were no appointments and to try to call back tomorrow. The pain is bad but because I am otherwise okay in myself I’d feel stupid going to A&E. But I also don’t know if I can wait until
the morning!

Any advice?!

I’m sorry op.. that does sound like an insensitive comment from the nurse.. I hope you are seen soon and make a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹

HellsBells67 · 23/01/2024 22:23

A&E is paid for by us, through taxes! As are GPs but they seem to have packed up shop and gone home!

Paw2024 · 23/01/2024 21:05

You won't be seen any quicker going via ambulance

I was taken in by ambulance, I waited 24 hours with a head injury, so you might get triaged quickly but wait for hours and hours.

RestingCatsArseFace · 23/01/2024 22:28

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 22:20

Haven’t been triaged yet. It really is so hectic and a nurse came out to say that if you had to ‘pay for A&E half of those attending wouldn’t be here, there’s always private GPs you can see’. I get it, but seems a bit out of touch considering that is not financially accessible for most.

If you had to pay I wouldn't have been sitting next to a woman with all her family around, and a takeaway coffee, who had gone in with a cough. She didn't cough once in all the hours I sat by her. Chemists were open too...

I would be happy to pay something if it meant that people didn't wander in for no reason.

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 22:31

@RestingCatsArseFace That’s why I said I get it. But on the other hand, if you had to pay (not through taxes) but couldn’t, and actually really needed to be seen for something very serious, you’d be f*cked.

OP hope you’re seen soon.

I think there should be another part of a&e for those who misuse it, like an on site gp. Unless it’s a genuine emergency they can sit with their coughs and grazes for hours and wait for gp. Those who have been told to go by 111, are bleeding or in extreme pain can be triaged more quickly and treated.

Duckingfun · 23/01/2024 22:35

Hope you get some answers x

its frustrating that during lockdown a&e saw such a drop in people attending, if they can get through it at home during lockdown they should be able to get through it now!

twiddlingthumbs69 · 23/01/2024 20:30

@Nctaxq hmm, tricky one. If you go in via ambulance you'll be seen straight away. If you go in yourself, you could wait hours in A&E. Try and hang on if you can, if you're getting worse, ring 999 again and tell them, they'll re prioritise

This is utter bullshit about being seen sooner if you go in by ambulance. 😬😬😬

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 22:51

Been triaged, blood pressure 159/67 and heart rate 123. Waiting for bloods but they said there’s a really long wait for both bloods and a doctor

Todolististoolong · 23/01/2024 22:52

Maybe kidney stones…I have chronic stones and it can be fairly high up pain at times, hope you get seen soon

Nctaxq · 23/01/2024 22:52

Oh and temp 37.5 so that’s ok

mkwar · 23/01/2024 22:53

Hope everything is ok OP! Get better soon x

SuffolkUnicorn · 23/01/2024 22:53

Gastritis/spleen I’ve got a cyst on my spleen (found during my gastric sleeve op) or something in the pancreas

thaegumathteth · 23/01/2024 23:03

Kidney stones pain can be like this, hope you get relief soon

DyslexicPoster · 23/01/2024 23:11

Good luck, I hope the wait in A&D isn't to hideous. My friend was taken in by ambulance for suspected heart attack and waited over 9 hours a few weeks ago.

I woke up with a weird period type pain a few weeks ago, but unlike any other pain. I thought I had twisted something inside in my sleep. I was heaving uncontrollably for over a hour non stop but wasn't sick. Decided to try to drink some tea and it just vanished. So weird.

Anyway I hope its nothing and your seen fast.

RaginaPhalange · 23/01/2024 23:37

Hope you're OK op, wait times in a&e are shocking.

Nctaxq · 24/01/2024 00:21

havent been called for bloods yet, sweating so badly. It’s going to be another 6 hours at least

This is not true. Being taken in by ambulance doesn’t mean you will be seen quicker. You will be triaged again at A&E and they will decide order of priority considering everyone including those already there and their presentations.

TravChief · 24/01/2024 00:43

LadeOde · 23/01/2024 21:51

The way to be seen quicker is if a doctor calls an ambulance for you, these are prioritised. If you diall the Out of hours GP and they think you need to goto A&E they will call an ambulance for you.

Also wrong. If a doctor calls an ambulance for you, you are considered to be in a place of more medical safety as you are with a health care professional when compared to someone needing an ambulance on their own. So calls from GPs are prioritised lower.

workingitout75 · 24/01/2024 00:47

Are they giving you any treatment while you wait?

PeopleAreWeird · 24/01/2024 00:50

3 hours wait before bloods are taken is a very long time…
I would ask a nurse if you are on the list for bloods

MondayMania · 24/01/2024 00:52

I would say acute pancreatitis with those symptoms and obs. Good luck, OP, I do hope you aren't left waiting all night Sad. What a sorry state we're in right now.

Hollywolly1 · 24/01/2024 00:55

Hoping u feel better soon🌺🌻

scaredofff · 24/01/2024 01:03

Checking in with you op, that wait sounds horrendous! Hopefully that's the worst case scenario and your name is called soon
Hoping it's not too serious and you get some pain relief! Xx

Nctaxq · 24/01/2024 01:03

I’ve just gone up to ask about the blood tests. I’ve been waiting ages for them and am getting worried about my symptoms. I’m sweating so badly and the pain won’t stop. I understand there are more prioritised and significantly worse off than me but the pain I am in with my heart rate & blood pressure and the sweating I’m so confused as to why bloods haven’t been done in case of infection.
