Are mumsneters TERFs

1000 replies

I started a thread on the new taskmaster line up here. This greatly angered a taskmaster fb group who screenshot the conversation and agreed all mumsnetters were TERFs. AIBU to suggest this isn't the general perception of others when you have mentioned mumsnet ? Ps. I still haven't heard of John Robins !

I don’t believe that people can change sex or that wearing women’s clothing makes you a woman.

I believe in the sexes and gender is complete nonsense. And that sex based exemptions are needed for the safety, privacy, and dignity of women and girls (the garden variety type).

If that makes me a TERF, then yes, I am a TERF.

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/01/2024 13:31

I hope so. Biological realism isn’t bad.

I don't consider myself a F but I broadly align with the TER bit

fedupandstuck · 18/01/2024 13:32

I don't know or care what other people's perception of mumsnet is! If other people want to call me a terf because I know that mammals cannot change sex, and that gender is tool used by patriarchal societies/systems in a way that is damaging for women.... well they are welcome to do so.

KvotheTheBloodless · 18/01/2024 13:33

I believe that there are two biological sexes, that DSDs do not invalidate this fact, and that you cannot change sex.
I think gender is a set of societal stereotypes that are harmful to both men and women, so I reject it.

I think that what makes me a woman is being born female.

If that makes me a TERF, then fine, I am one, although I'd not personally use that term as I think it is offensive.

NewYearNewCake · 18/01/2024 13:33

If believing a biological man can never be a woman then, hell yeah, I’m a TERF.

Verv · 18/01/2024 13:33

A TERF is someone who understands that a woman is an adult human female.
I would assume that this covers a large proportion of mumsnetters.

No still there! Became a really nice chat about taskmaster and I looked up a lot of Steve Pemberton's work ! 😀

Well, I don't believe that transwomen are women, so I guess I am a TERF. Oh well.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 18/01/2024 13:35

Angry reactionist types who spend too much time on other internet forums and who think all women are a homogeneous group with the same thoughts, no feelings (that matter) and irrelevant opinions tend to show their misogyny (internalised or otherwise) at every available opportunity.

Once you see them for what they are, you can't unsee it.

Then there's the easily led who have never been on MN but take what other people say as fact.

AgnesX · 18/01/2024 13:35

Quite a lot of MN unreservedly. But...there a lot of others with children who think they are/are/mixed up/some variation and are having to find their own road to follow, so it's not that clear cut.

popebishop · 18/01/2024 13:36

Goady thread.
Terfs exclude trans people from feminism.

Most MNers only wish to centre females - whether they are trans or not doesn't come into it at all. So it's not true.

As always no-one will be able to say what they actually mean by trans, terf, woman, man, gender identity so we'll all end up talking at cross purposes.

I'll just say I don't believe either sex can "match" a gender identity. There are bodies and personalities and to say one maps on to the other is sexist.

EsmeSusanOgg · 18/01/2024 13:36

Mumsnet has a reputation for being a bit TERFy. But not everyone is, and also most threads are nothing to do with trans activism/ gender critical/ TERF discussions. But expect this thread to derail quickly now you mentioned it!

Terfosaurus · 18/01/2024 13:36

If I mention MN to any of the TRAish people I know they make disapproving noises.

FWIW, despite my name, I don't think I'm a TERF. I don't think you can change sex, and sex matters a lot of the time. But according to some that means I'm a TERF.

Deathbyathousandcats · 18/01/2024 13:36

I don’t share the magical thinking that people can change sex, and I don’t think that men should be in women-only spaces, however they identify.
Some would call me a TERF for believing that.

Marchintospring · 18/01/2024 13:37

I hope so.
No one can change sex.

I have no issues with breaking down gender divides. Wear what you want, grow and cut your hair how you like., male or female.

Nobody on that thread actually is incensed about tights though, are they? They’re angry and upset about offensive, dangerous and misogynist slogans being sold by a company which also privileges men with fetishes above women.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 18/01/2024 13:38

Verv · 18/01/2024 13:33

By the proper definition, a TERF is a Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. Radfem is not the same as GC, but both groups believe a woman is an adult human female. So do a lot of alt-right misogynist conservative Christians though and they're not TERFs either. 🤷‍♀️ However we speak a living language and the common meaning does seem to be being stretched. I don't know how actual TERFs feel about their language being co-opted as I am GC not TERF.

As a sidenote, all those throwing about "TERF" as a slur have never ever seen real TERF discourse, it would literally make them run to mummy crying.

brainworms · 18/01/2024 13:39

It does have a reputation for it.

Plenty on there incensed just by the mere thought of a man wearing tights... so yeah, they are.

You're on MN so if you're assuming everyone on MN is a TERF and that we all think the same thing, you're including yourself in that... 🧐

Giggorata · 18/01/2024 13:40

TERF is a misleading term applied by trans activists and wokerati to gender critical people.
It implies that gender critical people have some kind of prejudice against trans people, rather than knowing that sex isn't changeable and not wishing to joins the belief system.
And why shouldn't “TERFs” like Taskmaster? It's brilliant.

Sussurations · 18/01/2024 13:40

If you say so 🙄
