Are mumsneters TERFs

1000 replies

ChedderGorgeous · 18/01/2024 13:25

I started a thread on the new taskmaster line up here. This greatly angered a taskmaster fb group who screenshot the conversation and agreed all mumsnetters were TERFs. AIBU to suggest this isn't the general perception of others when you have mentioned mumsnet ? Ps. I still haven't heard of John Robins !

I’m a TERF and proud. I want my daughter to be able to compete in sports with her own sex. To have a ward with her own sex in hospital. To have a jail cell with her own sex should she regrettably go to jail. To be able to go to the bathroom or changing room and find her own sex.

That is what I’m for

TippiHedrin · 18/01/2024 14:13

I’m not. I have no problem with trans people being included in public life. I have several trans friends and I find the UK “debate” about their right to exist in public to be completely toxic.

I do question whether I should be on this website at all, really, but sadly I do enjoy a parking thread.

Right to exist or just not to enter spaces, sports that don't align with their biological sex? I.e not for them.

I've yet to meet any GC person who doesn't think trans people should exist.

Where on MN have you seen posters argue for trans people not being included in public life or exist in public? or in the UK? 🤔

Nestofwalnuts · 18/01/2024 14:18

There are lots of out and proud TERFs on MN because it's a site that allows women to speak freely and such places are rare these days.

But it's plain silly to say all MN-ers are TERFS. Loads of people come on for help about weaning, neurodiversity, gardening, what colour to paint their kitchen or to discuss TV programmes, books, arts & crafts etc. There are lots of little bubbles like this on MN and they are full of all sorts of people. The feminist boards aren't representative of every single MN-er.

VampireWeekday · 18/01/2024 14:20

Honestly, yes, MN is very TERF - heavy. Trans Exclusionary - yes, thinking that trans women aren't women is a popualr view on here, as is thinking that women should have access to single sex spaces. Radical Feminist - sadly, pointing out the violence of men and holding space to help and support other women is considered feminism. Oh that it were just considered being human.

turbonerd · 18/01/2024 14:21

Poudretteite · 18/01/2024 14:04

If you mean, do I believe in biological sex, and that it determines whether you're a man or a woman, then yes.

Ditto.

Theyarehere · 18/01/2024 14:21

I don’t believe anybody can actually change sex. In the real world where people actually live everyone I know manages to understand the basic realities of this.

Echobelly · 18/01/2024 14:22

A small % are TERFS or gender critical, but these are huge boards and like most people in the country, most posters have no involvement in discussing trans issues at all. That really needs putting in context, it's not actually on most people's radar at all. It's so annoying because I have often had to comment when some fellow lefties' misogyny shows when they're all 'Mumsnet are all TERFS LOL!' that actually it's a huge site and women are discussing a huge range of things, very little of which is related to trans people.

I've never seen anyone want trans people to be excluded from "public life" . I've seen people wanting to protect women only spaces without which many women, including the most vulnerable, may well be excluded from public life. Why do YOU want to exclude women with abuse histories or religious beliefs from public life due to the restrictions imposed when women only spaces are no longer just that? Why are you able to empathise with trans people but not biological women?

Silverbirchtwo · 18/01/2024 14:22

Why does everyone have to get labelled with these incomprehensible sets of capital letters. Is it just trying to push people into one stereotype or another?

Having looked it up:

'trans-exclusionary radical feminist' (TERF)

I am still none the wiser, but I don't think I am one....

Beautiful3 · 18/01/2024 14:22

I don't know what a terf is, but I don't believe we can change gender biologically. I also think it's stupid when a man thinks he is a woman when he's wearing a dress and makeup. He is just a man wearing a dress and make up. I agree that everyone is different and can wear what ever they like. But people cannot claim to be their opposite gender, it's nonsense. I follow a detranisitioning group. Many children/teenagers who were given hormone therapy, and operations, are now detransitioning back to their biological gender. What does that tell us? We can be gay/straight but never change our gender.

CharlotteRumpling · 18/01/2024 14:23

So many straw men arguments:
Trans people aren't allowed to exist? Really?
My close friends are trans. And?
Good luck to them.

I am also often enraged by the argument that this is a white women thing. Nope. I am brown, and I can tell you many brown women don't want men in our toilets, or taking their places on schemes meant for PoC to increase diversity. They are just scared to speak out after what happened to Maya Forstater.

ElBandito · 18/01/2024 14:24

All mumsnetters are terfs in the same way that all Facebook users are anti vaccine nutters and all Reddit users aren't sure if they are arseholes or not so have to check on a regular basis.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 18/01/2024 14:24

It's generally pretty TERFy and even more SWERFy.

so are you saying trans women (men, crudely dressed as a woman) are women?

A bloody brilliant game show with comedians. Treat yourself!

I don’t quite understand where all this came from.

was the FB poster who screenshotted the post about taskmaster suggesting MN isn’t allowed to discuss TM because we are all TERFs?

how did they get the screenshot? Through browsing MN?

is there any connection between the TM line up and terfs?

why does a post on MN about TM upset a group on FB?

Yes it was all a bit strange. A friend sent me the screenshots. The fb poster was angry I hadn't heard of the the new taskmaster line up and then posted screen shots to a taskmaster fb group. Much gnashing of teeth (despite half the group also not knowing the line up). Others commentated "who cares what a bunch of TERFs think". Mumsnet is also called "prosecco stormfront" by others

WallaceinAnderland · 18/01/2024 14:26

The 'anti-trans' label has not come from terfs or GC women. It's from men who want to use female only spaces.

The GC view is that you can be mates with a transwoman. You can call her by whatever name she wants and use the pronouns she wants. You can have shared interests and socialise together. If you go out for a game of badminton or a kick boxing session, you use the female changing facilities and she uses the male facilities. Because she has a male body and should change with other male bodies.

Most men would have no objection to another male body in their changing facilities, even if that person showers, dries off and then dresses in pink leggings. It's men who need to adapt, not women. GC women are already supportive of transmen in female facilities because they have a female body.

It's not anti-trans, it's inclusive to everyone, including natal females.

it’s not SWERFy to acknowledge that SW exploits women, therefore isn’t all fun and games.

No, not.all MNers are at all.
It's just the FWR section who proudly say they are.
If a thread comes out onto the main boards it soon becomes more apparent not all MNers are when it's away from the echo chamber as more opinions are seen.
Can see why anyone not familiar with MN would automatically think that everyone is though, which just isn't the case!

I'm on FWR and I say I'm not.

So you're incorrect to say that.

FaiIureToLunch · 18/01/2024 14:28

I’m a scientist. And therefore a terf.

AlisonWonderbra · 18/01/2024 14:29

I'm certainly not, and have a trans (adult) child.

TripleDaisySummer · 18/01/2024 14:29

It's a rare female dominated well known space on the internet.

It's population is probably more affected by biological reality than other areas of internet users are or very least allowed to talk about their reality.

But also just being a female dominate website seems to make it fair game to generalise and insult with little to no basis in reality - just for daring to exist.
