Are mumsneters TERFs

1000 replies

ChedderGorgeous · 18/01/2024 13:25

I started a thread on the new taskmaster line up here. This greatly angered a taskmaster fb group who screenshot the conversation and agreed all mumsnetters were TERFs. AIBU to suggest this isn't the general perception of others when you have mentioned mumsnet ? Ps. I still haven't heard of John Robins !

I have never seen the word " transphobic' properly used.

Rexxymusic · 18/01/2024 13:40

Well I don't consider myself a 'radical' feminist, and I don't exclude transmen from my idea of feminism as they are female. So I would say I'm more of a MEF than a TERF.

Branleuse · 18/01/2024 13:43

i think the term terf is pretty silly, but i have definitely been called a terf, and i dont mind.

Goldenpashmina · 18/01/2024 13:45

SisterMichaelsHabit · 18/01/2024 13:40

You're on MN so if you're assuming everyone on MN is a TERF and that we all think the same thing, you're including yourself in that... 🧐

Hardly the "gotcha" you think it is given I clearly said MNers are not TERFs in my first response but sure

Morningmeeting · 18/01/2024 13:46

Mumsnet is a rare and valuable space where people of all political beliefs can express and debate them.

This is a great thing to be applauded and it means people can converse on their GC/ TRA views if they want to.

People who object to the democratic principle of people being able to discuss and organise around their legitimate and legal beliefs might feel the need to call Mumsnet Terfy.

I don’t think it’s strange that a group of (predominantly) mothers understand basic biology 🤷‍♀️

popebishop · 18/01/2024 13:48

"Radical" doesn't mean "extreme" in this context btw. It's to do with the roots of sexism (radical = root), needing fundamental restructuring. A common misconception!

ManateeFair · 18/01/2024 13:49

There’s certainly a much higher incidence of terfs on Mumsnet than among the women I actually meet a) in real life or b) anywhere else on line.

WallaceinAnderland · 18/01/2024 13:49

I'm more of a MERF.

I don't think men should be in womens single sex spaces, prisons, hospitals or sports, etc. even if they have bought a certificate for £5 which lets them legally change their sex.

Men are still men and should stay out of women's spaces.

DocOck · 18/01/2024 13:50

NewYearNewCake · 18/01/2024 13:33

If believing a biological man can never be a woman then, hell yeah, I’m a TERF.

Yep this.

Or women are scared to speak out because they can be sacked and ostracised. I can't speak out in my workplace, for instance. So no one knows I am.

TinselAngel · 18/01/2024 13:50

As one of the UK's leading Terfs I can confirm yes, everyone on Mumsnet agrees with absolutely everything I say.

purplehotdogs · 18/01/2024 13:50

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/01/2024 13:31

I hope so. Biological realism isn’t bad.

Exactly this.

BareBelliedSneetch · 18/01/2024 13:52

I don’t quite understand where all this came from.

was the FB poster who screenshotted the post about taskmaster suggesting MN isn’t allowed to discuss TM because we are all TERFs?

how did they get the screenshot? Through browsing MN?

is there any connection between the TM line up and terfs?

why does a post on MN about TM upset a group on FB?

That's mostly because other sites won't allow women to ask for single sex spaces. You would be banned from Reddit for example.

In real life women are too scared to talk about it. Even 'terfs'. They are scared of being discriminated against and losing their jobs.

meowie · 18/01/2024 13:54

On the whole no.

'Trans Exclusionary' yes but 'Radical Feminist' no - not even feminist, just read the first page of this thread!

I suspect there are quite a number of not terribly clever posters who love to jump on controversial bandwagons and start moral panics to make themselves feel more important, hence the rabid anti-trans stance of so many here.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 18/01/2024 13:54

Is Steve Pemberton a terf? Great news. I like him.

CharlotteRumpling · 18/01/2024 13:55

@meowie so you are not a feminist. Do you believe in equal pay for equal work? If so, that makes you one.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 18/01/2024 13:55

Other way round for me, no one I know in real life believes in gender ideology. Plenty of it online though.

TERF signing in here Grin

ManyATrueWord · 18/01/2024 13:56

Certainly lots of women here are MEN exclusionary from female.spaces. TERF is a term of abuse levelled at women who want to keep biological men out of female only spaces but would include trans men, because they are biological women. Like always, men don't get their own way and they starr slinging abuse.

Ha ha, I'm a feminist, yes. But a lot of the anti-trans posters here are not.

popebishop · 18/01/2024 13:58

Sex is real, and sometimes it matters.

This is the GC belief.

Many trans people also believe it.
