Are mumsneters TERFs

I started a thread on the new taskmaster line up here. This greatly angered a taskmaster fb group who screenshot the conversation and agreed all mumsnetters were TERFs. AIBU to suggest this isn't the general perception of others when you have mentioned mumsnet ? Ps. I still haven't heard of John Robins !

I'm a MERF. People can't change sex. Single sex spaces for women are important and should remain without the usual ill thought out 'bigot!' slurs.

I don't care if a male feels more authentic wearing a dress, make up, heels or anything else that makes them feel like a 'woman', whatever that means. Crack on. However that's just what you are, you're a man who rejects typical social stereotypes, you don't become a woman and you don't automatically get a magical to enter women's spaces.

Same as for women presenting as what they believe to be a man.

Sex matters.

WallaceinAnderland · 18/01/2024 13:49

I'm more of a MERF.

I don't think men should be in womens single sex spaces, prisons, hospitals or sports, etc. even if they have bought a certificate for £5 which lets them legally change their sex.

Men are still men and should stay out of women's spaces.

Very well put

Bobbotgegrinch · 18/01/2024 14:00

TERF and proud of it here

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 18/01/2024 14:01

Pro sex based spaces doesn't automatically equate to anti-trans. That's what many posters on here fail to grasp.

This is me too.

CharlotteRumpling · 18/01/2024 14:02

Most of the world are TERFs really. I expect in a few years we will look back and laugh at this phase where men could enter women's sports/spaces and we are supposed to welcome them or be called transphobic.

The tide is already turning.

(biological) Reality to

TERF signing in here Grin

Although in this case, I'm definitely a TEEF.

Poudretteite · 18/01/2024 14:04

If you mean, do I believe in biological sex, and that it determines whether you're a man or a woman, then yes.

CandyLeBonBon · 18/01/2024 14:04

KvotheTheBloodless · 18/01/2024 13:33

I believe that there are two biological sexes, that DSDs do not invalidate this fact, and that you cannot change sex.
I think gender is a set of societal stereotypes that are harmful to both men and women, so I reject it.

I think that what makes me a woman is being born female.

If that makes me a TERF, then fine, I am one, although I'd not personally use that term as I think it is offensive.

This!^^

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 18/01/2024 14:05

No, not.all MNers are at all.
It's just the FWR section who proudly say they are.
If a thread comes out onto the main boards it soon becomes more apparent not all MNers are when it's away from the echo chamber as more opinions are seen.
Can see why anyone not familiar with MN would automatically think that everyone is though, which just isn't the case!

Desecratedcoconut · 18/01/2024 14:05

There are a few genderists around but most women here understand biology.

There’s a particularly vocal group of self labelled women here yes.

I lean towards GC and am not fully subscribed to the belief that saying you are something makes that a reality; however I do have the capacity for respect of differing of opinions and compromise.

I’ve never identified as a terf primarily because I don’t subscribe to the notion that this subject has to be a hostile conversation. I’ve been told I’m not ‘really’ GC or a feminist by women who do identify themselves as terfs and frankly I don’t really want to be part of their radicalisation which is apparently obligatory.

on the whole it’s a very easy subject to swerve on MN so no, it isn’t true to say that every mnetter is a terf.

I don’t really understand this. Was the FB group suggestion that any views women might have via the medium of one of the biggest sites in the U.K. on in the line up of a TV show was worthy of contempt because other users of the same website believe that sex is real and sometimes it matters?

Bex5490 · 18/01/2024 14:09

I think a large proportion of MNers are really into this debate and Mumsnet has provided a space (The Sex and Gender section) for them to have those conversations.

Others of us either hold different views or don’t actually care that much about it. But because we probably use Mumsnet for other reasons and prefer talking about different topic, our voices on here about this subject are a lot quieter.

So no - all MNers are not ‘Terfs.’

CharlotteRumpling · 18/01/2024 14:10

Where do you see compromise can be achieved @Cornettoninja? I, for one, don't care if men wear dresses or tights or makeup or call themselves anything. But I won't call them women.

Verv · 18/01/2024 14:10

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 18/01/2024 13:38

By the proper definition, a TERF is a Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. Radfem is not the same as GC, but both groups believe a woman is an adult human female. So do a lot of alt-right misogynist conservative Christians though and they're not TERFs either. 🤷‍♀️ However we speak a living language and the common meaning does seem to be being stretched. I don't know how actual TERFs feel about their language being co-opted as I am GC not TERF.

As a sidenote, all those throwing about "TERF" as a slur have never ever seen real TERF discourse, it would literally make them run to mummy crying.

Edited

Proper definition is long gone to the point that lesbians are routinely accused of being TERFS for not entertaining sex with males.

Im GC and not a radical feminist, and yet by the definition of TRA's themselves, I am a TERF because I am exclusively same sex attracted.

Because to a sizeable portion of the population being a ‘terf’ and on MN is akin to being a massive racist and being on stormfront.

KStockHERO · 18/01/2024 14:12

I'm not that keen on the term "TERF". Because:
> I'm not "trans-exclusionary", I include women who believe/wish themselves to be men in my political approach to sex and gender.
> I'm not "Radical" because believing in the reality of biological sex and all that comes with it, to me, isn't a very "radical" position.
> I don't really call myself a "feminist" any more because of how wet lettuce liberal feminists, vacuous celebrities, and multi-national brands have jumped on and adopted the term when their politics are, for me, a million miles from what feminism is.

Like others, I believe in the immutability of biological sex and all that goes with that. If that makes me a TERF, fine, call me a TERF.
Akin to pronouns, how people refer to me in the third person is really none of my concern and nothing I can police so fill your boots.

HeadNorth · 18/01/2024 14:12

As the responses demonstrate, there are a lot of them. However it is easy to bodyswerve the issue - I just don't go on FWR where they all hang out winding each other up.

TippiHedrin · 18/01/2024 14:13

I’m not. I have no problem with trans people being included in public life. I have several trans friends and I find the UK “debate” about their right to exist in public to be completely toxic.

I do question whether I should be on this website at all, really, but sadly I do enjoy a parking thread.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 18/01/2024 14:13

I don’t care what people think of me, men can’t become women by donning lipstick.

CactusMactus · 18/01/2024 14:13

maras2 · 18/01/2024 14:14

I'm a 70 year old TERF.
And so is my husband, except he's 74. Grin
