Mum wouldn't let my newborn put on Christmas outfit

I'm got my mum helping with the newborn and u bought a Christmas outfit. I wanted to put him in it last night for cuddles etc. she said no. At 11.30 today (going to relatives m for 2pm) I suggested again - again no.

AIBU in thinking I can dress my child in whatever I want, whatever I want and she needs to back down. She said he might dirty it - well stop changing nappy straight away as baby isn't finish pooing.

Ignore her. Just put it on.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/12/2023 12:36

I don’t know why she has anything to do with this? You take your baby and dress them however you want.

Sirzy · 25/12/2023 12:36

Of course you can dress baby in whatever you want.

that said if you want him wearing it when you go out then changing into it when you do the nappy change ready to go out makes most sense in terms of reducing chance of it being thrown up on before even getting there!

Lunde · 25/12/2023 12:36

Just put it on - you are the parent here

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 25/12/2023 12:37

Why are you even asking her - if you want your newborn to wear the outfit go ahead- not like you can save it for next Christmas!!

FilthyforFirth · 25/12/2023 12:37

Are you a teen mum? I cant imagine an adult letting their mother dictate to this degree.

Dress your baby however you like!

CozyWinterDuvet · 25/12/2023 12:37

I don’t get why you’re ‘suggesting’ it as if you’re asking permission? It’s your baby - dress them in whatever you like.

BingoMarieHeeler · 25/12/2023 12:37

Hope you ignored her and dressed the baby in the outfit both times. If not, in 2024 your goal can be to ignore your mother more 😁

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 25/12/2023 12:38

Why on Earth are you

A. even asking your mum for permission
B. Not pissing yourself laughing at her telling you you can’t dress your DC in an outfit

JustEnoughPlates · 25/12/2023 12:38

How old are you? Dress your baby how you wish.

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 25/12/2023 12:39

Are you a young mum by any chance OP?

idontlikealdi · 25/12/2023 12:39

Child in what you want.

StrawberryWater · 25/12/2023 12:41

Why are you letting her dictate?

Who is the baby's parent here?

Testina · 25/12/2023 12:42

Why are you allowing this?

Ktime · 25/12/2023 12:42

Why are you asking your mum about putting on an outfit on your own baby? Just do it, you don’t need her permission!

SouthLondonMum22 · 25/12/2023 12:43

Why do you need permission from your mum? Just put it on.

CommonSenze · 25/12/2023 12:44

Did mum (not OP) buy the outfit.
i am not agreeing with her just trying to get some context

margotrose · 25/12/2023 12:44

What's it got to do with her? Confused

gamerchick · 25/12/2023 12:45

Why are you suggesting are your arms broken? Just dress your kid how you want.

AuntMarch · 25/12/2023 12:46

This sounds like a difficult dynamic. Does she take over a lot?

Testina · 25/12/2023 12:46

I wrote the same then deleted as “u” is surely a typo for “I” not she? As it’s one letter and next to “I”?
In any case, that would only explain last night, not today.
Not having a go at you… just sharing that I went through the same thought process!

@sleepsuitbag you’re the adult and the parent here.

HippeePrincess · 25/12/2023 12:46

It’s got nothing to do with her so do what you like, but as a mum of 3 if I wanted baby to wear something for visits I’d wait til the last second before leaving the house, or even after the car journey as we’ve had so many sick and shit incidents particularly in the car seat.

Your choice.

pinkdelight · 25/12/2023 12:49

It sounds like there's an issue around her 'helping' becoming a grey area of who's in charge. Of course you're the parent and you can dress your baby as you please, you don't need to suggest or get her approval/permission. But if she's doing the childcare, nappy changing and all that, then I can see where the confusion has come in, if you just want to do clothing and cuddles and she's doing the rest. Perhaps that's not the case, but either way, best to establish good boundaries now or it'll only get trickier as time goes on.
