On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

I’m also not feeling great but not terrible - weird throat/ear ache. Sis has a UTI

Oh dear. Just sounds like everyone is either tired or under the weather. Suggest early nights all round and hopefully things will be better tomorrow 🤞

AlmondButterToast · 04/12/2023 20:08

Sounds a bit miserable but hopefully everyone's tired and will perk up with forest walks and French food and and wine tomorrow.

Drink more!!!

Dartmoorcheffy · 04/12/2023 20:09

If you've just arrived everyone is probably tired and just want to relax quietly. I'm sure it will be fine tomorrow.

Louez · 04/12/2023 20:09

I could be in my flat but am having to share a room with my sis (2 singles).

Crikey , people are tired , give them a break

KarmaisYOURboyfriend · 04/12/2023 20:11

You've not exactly got PMA about it. Open a bottle of something and chill out, You seemed destined to not want to enjoy it.

Louez · 04/12/2023 20:11

The one conversation we have had was centred on garage door paint colour :/

Arrival day is often tricky. Hopefully everyone will wake up refreshed and cheerful tomorrow.

DGPP · 04/12/2023 20:12

Stop wishing to go home. Just let everyone relax tonight and see if people fancy. A walk or lunch out tomorrow. Sounds like people are under the weather

StBrides · 04/12/2023 20:13

I get why it feels anti climatic but give them time to rest and settle. Each has valid reasons for feeling rubbish!

Light some candles, listen to some music and have a cosy night in - relax in the bath with some wine and let everyone start the holiday tomorrow

Louez · 04/12/2023 20:14

Opened a bottle but I’ve been weirdly intolerant of alcohol recently. Not even got that to amuse myself!

Ou est le bar? Prenez un grand cognac ou deux. Parlez avec la population locale. Amusez vous bien!

Louez · 04/12/2023 20:19

No one is happy.

Try and use the time to relax. Have you got a book or headphones to listen to a podcast? Go for a walk and explore perhaps?

ssd · 04/12/2023 20:25

Are you all grown up adults going on holiday with mum and dad?

My first thought is, why??

DGPP · 04/12/2023 20:27

Loads of people love going on holiday with their mum and dad. Not sure why it’s strange

hairbearbunches · 04/12/2023 20:27

No advice for you but just wanted to flag the 'weird throat'. I started with that, it wasn't sore, it wasn't not sore, I was just very conscious of my throat. It's one of the new symptoms of the new Covid variant and i did end up testing positive.

That’ll perk her up I’m sure!!!

Might give her an excuse to bail as well. Silver linings and all.

Newtonianmechanics · 04/12/2023 20:31

Your room looks clean at least op.

HeddaGarbled · 04/12/2023 20:33

It’s often like this when you just arrive on holiday. Everyone’s tired, the travelling is stressful and the accommodation isn’t as perfect as it looked in the pictures.

It’ll all look better in the morning.

Take your brother’s advice and chill.

Wendysfriend · 04/12/2023 20:33

Aww get yourself snuggled on the sofa with a big comfy blanket and wrap your hands around a big mug of hot chocolate and eat some crusty bread while reading your book.

Only joking.... Just get as much alcohol into you, order a taxi to bring you to a bar or just get drunk there.

SequentialAnalyst · 04/12/2023 20:35

It seems to me to be quite a common thing for people to get through to a much anticipated getaway, only to find they initially collapse. It sounds like everyone could do with some rest, so their bodies are ensuring they are getting it, now they don't have to go off to work etc.

And the much needed rest will begin to restore them, and hopefully the rest of the time away will be much more enjoyable.
