On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

Have you considered being a writer, or are you already a writer, you seem to have the start of a good story here, people are tired and not getting on, off in their own little selfish worlds,, but something lurks in the woods, not quite human.................and you will have to band together if you want to survive the night.........!

The one conversation we have had was centred on garage door paint colour :/

What kind of people are they? You couldn't pay me to go away with my in-laws for instance. They are all nice people but they have ZERO laughs and fun in each others company, family get togethers are pretty awkward and boring. In their company, it makes me really miss my own family who live abroad as it's the complete opposite with them.

This is stressing me out too. Having toothache on holiday is a weirdly specific phobia of mine. I'm going to need to know more. What are her plans? Local dentist?

I hear that. Last place you want toothache, in a strange country. Hope something is done for her soon.

Charlize43 · 04/12/2023 21:57

Arrival and everyone is tired and just wants to relax and be low keyed. It's understandable.

I'm not sure why you are manifesting misery and keep saying that you want to go home when you've only just arrived!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 04/12/2023 21:57

The earache you've got might just be from flying. Your mum's toothache is potentially more problematic. She must be feeling pretty miserable.

santasknackered · 04/12/2023 21:58

This is the weirdest thread, on so many levels.

PrimitivePerson · 04/12/2023 22:01

That room is not in France...

Are you all grown up adults going on holiday with mum and dad?

My first thought is, why??

I'm 40 and I love going away with my parents, sister, dhs and dc. We have the best time. They are the people I love most in the world. Why would I not want to go away with them?

heartsinvisiblefury · 04/12/2023 22:02

This is a very strange thread!

No advice for you but just wanted to flag the 'weird throat'. I started with that, it wasn't sore, it wasn't not sore, I was just very conscious of my throat. It's one of the new symptoms of the new Covid variant and i did end up testing positive.

Me and my kids have had this for a month now, started with weird throat on holiday funky enough. I tested negative but it was a few weeks ago, wonder if worth doing again, I feel exactly like I did during the lockdowns, just want to sleep all the time and can’t shake this buggy feeling at all.

Indeed, it is not.

I spotted the giveaway detail immediately. If you're going to make something up, at least pay attention to what you're posting!

flagonfull · 04/12/2023 22:09

I agree. This is a weird thread.
with so much identifying information.
I’ve gone away on trips where people are subdued the first night, especially when exhausted and the accommodation is not as amazing as you’d hope but still everyone makes the most of it after a good sleep unless they’re all a bunch of curmudgeons.
I wonder if your feelings are showing to everyone else and they’re picking up on your frustration and disappointment?
if I was in your shoes tonight after travelling I’d be OVERJOYED to be able to get into bed , have a drink, maybe read a book or listen to some sounds etc and not have to be ’on’ for everyone.

bonzaitree · 04/12/2023 22:09

Call it a night and head to sleep. Tomorrow is. New day

Hahahaha!!!

gawditswindy · 04/12/2023 22:11

Or. Maybe it's just a sore throat. Every illness or weird feeling is not Covid.

EmmaEmerald · 04/12/2023 22:12

The detail might be too dark to see correctly?

it looks more like a hotel room though.

Oh, it's VERY obvious.

laclochette · 04/12/2023 22:14

As my mum always said, everything's worse at night! A good rest and a new day, a chance to really see and appreciate what I hope are lovely surroundings, and get out and about, and I'm sure things will be different. Read a nice book or listen to a podcast, have a bath, focus on appreciating having nothing to do, how often do we all regularly wish that were the case!

Halfacnut · 04/12/2023 21:18

Now that is a conversation which would interest me. Whose garage door, and what colour is it?

Yup. That one has legs.

A bit like the Easy Jet werewolf.

SomeCatFromJapan · 04/12/2023 22:17

That plug socket doesn't look right.

laclochette · 04/12/2023 22:17

@PrimitivePerson aha! Good spot Poirot. This is very intriguing ...
