On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

The thing clawed its way slowly through the trees, heading for the cabin where a dim light shone in one of the windows, the rest of the residence seemed unoccupied but in the backlit window the shape of a man hunched over his phone started to take shape in the things brain as it`s feeding urges switched on........

People get tired. After a 15 hour drive, I arrived at my destination. Went to the local Super U to stock up, managed to pick bag up and smash the light at the end of the checkout. In spite of having a very good French vocabulary, I just stood there and stared while a local man picked up the glass, and an employee came with a dust pan.

So so tired, moronically and embarrassingly so.

People need sleep - that's my manifesto. 🤣

Gosh, your friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France, looks strikingly like a modern hotel room. I would move the conversation over onto that.

"Yes, I was so inspired by the decor at the Luton Travelodge that I chose to reproduce every detail in my French cabin."

@Mariposista I’d be furious OP. Moods, treading on eggshells and atmospheres on holiday is just holiday sabotage pure and simple. I’d be mad that I could have used my AL for something more exciting (and probably saying it)

Did you miss the part where it is arrival day? This means one of two things. They flew - in which case have endured the hell of an airport, a flight on which the majority of passengers would have acted like complete dicks and then a trek to final accomodation. Or, they drove, involving many hours and possibly traffic/delays for parts. Who wouldn’t want to just be left alone to chill on arrival?

My holidays involve 10hrs straight drive minimum (swap hourly with another driver), or 8-9hrs in airport/plane/last leg from landing airport. On arrival I usually jump in shower (wash off airport/plane/transport), make a cuppa, take myself off to lay on the bed and watch Netflix. No way will I do an activity, sit around chatting, go out to dinner, it’s pizza delivery or similar only. Then I start my holiday the next day all happy and energetic. If someone tried to derail my arrival chill out I’d be pissed and probably snap.

I always find I feel a bit deflated on arrival. Tired, adrenaline leaves and there’s so much to sort at the other end and unpack. Then add any disappointment with accommodation or weather and it can be an anticlimax . A large drink usually helps and it normally feels better by the morning.

tl;dr - none of it is actually happening.

Why is the plug socket UK not France? Why is the dog wearing the EJ jacket? What can’t you realise it’s the first night and chill out? Why does everyone else have to entertain you… So many questions….
