On a mini getaway and all 5 adults are miserable

Hi, just looking for advice/to rant.

We’ve arrived at a friend’s cabin in the Landes Forest, France. And the atmosphere is really awkward which is depressing.

Im 30, here with my parents, brother and sister (plus dog). Sister’s bf is joining us in a few days.

It’s been a few hours since we arrived. No one is angry but everyone seems off. Which is making me think…I want to go home.

My brother flies for EasyJet so am assuming he’s tired. After we arrived he walked the dog and is now just sat in the living room on his phone. My dad who is a stroke survivor has fallen asleep on the sofa next to my mum who has a tooth ache and is miserable looking.

I can tell no one wants to be here. The cabin is a bit grubby and we just left a house that has been completely gutted and looks amazing. Everyone seems on edge.

What can I do?

Dinner is the oven and I’m on my single bed with a cocktail. I’ve suggested a game but was told to “chill out”.

I would go out but have now drunk.

Is that a dog wearing the easyJet jacket or is your brother just really hairy? 🤣

A very hairy arm?? 😱😆

tachetastic · 04/12/2023 21:01

Agree that everyone is probably tired and things will be better tomorrow, but first and foremost tell your brother to get off his f*cking phone! How is your sister doing? If the three "kids" can focus on lifting the mood, your parents will get on board.

Failing that, focus on the dog. I bet he/she isn't being miserable and will probably love the extra attention.

Londonrach1 · 04/12/2023 21:02

Sounds like you all really need this break.. early bed and hope you all feeling better tomorrow. Maybe just look around nearby village a spot of lunch then relax in afternoon...

My thoughts too

gamerchick · 04/12/2023 21:03

Your mother has done a plane journey with toothache? Poor bugger. That's going to make her really miserable unless something can be done for her.

Bordesleyhills · 04/12/2023 21:04

Break from the norm…see what tomorrow brings

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 04/12/2023 21:04

Oh just leave everyone be. They’re probably tired and it’ll probably be better tomorrow. It doesn’t always need to be go go go.

This is stressing me out too. Having toothache on holiday is a weirdly specific phobia of mine. I'm going to need to know more. What are her plans? Local dentist?

Ejismyf · 04/12/2023 21:10

I'd just get cosy with a book tonight and drink tea or hot chocolate and get a good night's sleep and see what tomoro brings.

The one conversation we have had was centred on garage door paint colour :/

Now that is a conversation which would interest me. Whose garage door, and what colour is it?

It’s often like this when you just arrive on holiday. Everyone’s tired, the travelling is stressful and the accommodation isn’t as perfect as it looked in the pictures.

It’ll all look better in the morning.

Take your brother’s advice and chill.

Exactly this. I don’t recall a holiday where I haven’t felt full of doom and wanted to go home right away! It always seems to pass though after the first night or so. Hang in there OP!

Are you all grown up adults going on holiday with mum and dad?

My first thought is, why??

I go on holiday with my adult kids regularly. Why? Because we like each other and have fun

I feel like this too! I thought it was just me. I literally arrive, unpack, and feel like crying, even if the place is perfect.

Crishell · 04/12/2023 21:23

If I worked for EasyJet I'd be shattered and want to sit on my phone too.

You've given a lot of weirdly specific information. Why mention the exact location of the cabin or who your brother's employer is? The tone of your posts is very odd.

You've shared a weirdly accusatory post. Why deliberately try to get at the OP? The tone of your post is very unwelcome. 😂

SandyWaves · 04/12/2023 21:23

Enjoy your drink and have a couple more!

Tomorrow will be a better day. The day of arrival is usually exhausting. Packing last minute maybe, going to the airport, the endless waiting, flight time, travelling to the accommodation. It is a long day. Esp for your poor dad .

That was my first thought. My second was not a snowball's chance in hell I'd do that.

GreenFrostedPlant · 04/12/2023 20:56

Slightly of topic but there isn’t a chance you could be pregnant is there?

Alcohol intolerance and a sore throat was one of my first signs - obviously I didn’t know I was pregnant when drinking.

Exactly what I thought re alcohol intolerance and pregnancy.

Lots of people do this and have a good time, it’s not that unusual.

Echobelly · 04/12/2023 21:31

I think just accept everyone is a bit tired and under the weather, and needs to 'decompress' after the journey. I assume it's dark and cold right now, which isn't helping.

Hopefully will be better after a night's sleep - if people tomorrow are still feeling rough, tired or inert can you go out youself for a walk? Walk the dog with your brother? Just so you're not sitting there feeling uncomfortable.

Do you have any particular plans for this trip?

Alighttouchonthetiller · 04/12/2023 21:32

Your poor parents are feeling under the weather, either tiredness or toothache, which is just awful even when at home, never mind on holiday. Your sister isn't well, either. How about being nice to those who are tired/unwell/struggling instead of behaving like a 14 year old and moaning about their boring conversations about paint. It was obviously of interest to them. It's not all about you.

ActDottie · 04/12/2023 21:32

It’s the first night and you’re all just tired from travelling there.

Doodar · 04/12/2023 21:43

have a quick clean up, have you got loads of food in? if not go and get breakfast supplies, slow start to the morning then a little walk later. Could you eat out tomorrow night? Make the most of it, not moan!

Whatwouldnanado · 04/12/2023 21:49

You’re not responsible for everyone’s happiness but you can help yourself and shift the mood a bit. Don’t faff but have a tidy up, dispense paracetamol for the toothache, cook something, find something to enjoy on telly together. Early night and make plans over breakfast tomorrow. New day in the morning and all that.
