Ryanair new fee

I don't fly with them but feel out of fairness to anyone who does, you should be warned.

We need a modern Consumer Act to end such behaviour, at least at short notice.

Ryanair: Passengers accuse airline of 'scandalous' new fee

Passengers say they are being told to pay to get a boarding pass online or face queuing at the airport.

😡We need a transparent fare structure when we book. Simplicity.

I see Premier Inn are now charging for early check in too now. Any decent hotel lets you check in early for free it they have a room available.

NutellaEllaElla · 04/12/2023 14:35

You could tell us what the new fee is rather than making us click the link and drive new traffic to the site.

They're saying that you can only get your boarding pass online if you pay for seat selection. If you don't pay for seat selection you need to have Ryanair print it for you at the airport, meaning queues of up to 30mins.

BIossomtoes · 04/12/2023 14:58

Fine. Queuing isn’t a problem.

Ah thank you.

Is anyone else finding Ryanair to be increasingly hostile to customers? They're actively inconveniencing us.

Allfur · 04/12/2023 15:02

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

Because some of us don't care where we sit

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

If I am travelling on my own on a short flight I really don’t care where I sit so I might as well save the money

rookiemere · 04/12/2023 15:06

I don't understand I used to be able to access online boarding pass 24 hrs before if no seat booked. Does this mean I can't?

Allfur · 04/12/2023 15:02

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

we usually travel as a couple. Occasionally individual
No kids, so no need for specific seats

Ryanair only do short haul so its usually only less than 4hr I would have to be separated from DP anxiously waiting for when we can meet again.

kweeble · 04/12/2023 15:07

I’m flying alone and as cheaply as possible so this is annoying and would make me look for alternatives. I don’t want to pay extra for a seat.

Allfur · 04/12/2023 15:08

But if it saves on queuing - swings and roundabouts

Topseyt123 · 04/12/2023 15:09

It's fairly typical of Ryanair. 🙄😠

They don't do transparency or fairness and their top management generally seem to have a "sod the passengers" mentality. I tend to feel sorry for some of the staff on the ground who must get a fair bit of flack from the customers when this sort of bollocks comes up.

I don't doubt that someone will come along soon and say "just don't fly with them" but they have so many of the European routes completely sewn up from Stansted Airport and others that it is not easy to avoid them, much as many of us would love to.

BobDylansMasterpiece · 04/12/2023 15:09

"Ryanair passengers say the airline has come up with a "scandalous" new extra fee after they were charged to get their boarding passes online.
Unhappy travellers have taken to social media to express their frustration, saying they were required to pay up to £21 for a seat booking, in order to access an e-boarding pass.
The alternative was to queue for a paper pass at the airport."

They would charge for oxygen if they were allowed to

Friedtofuandbeans · 04/12/2023 15:10

Do they WANT passengers?! The mind boggles. I’ll carry on using EasyJet then!

We need a modern Consumer Act to end such behaviour, at least at short notice.

This comes under “drip pricing” which is actually being looked at by the UK Govt right now, and they have looked specifically at the aviation industry. So you may get your wish.

Ryanair have always been money grabbing shitbags so it’s no surprise. At one point the CEO spoke about charging passengers to use the loo on board.

Paperbagsaremine · 04/12/2023 15:15

I've just checked in online and have a boarding pass and just went with random seat selection.

I noticed that as I clicked through, one screen had the button for 'get me the random seat for free' in one place with one 'look' and then on the next screen, that choice was in a different place with a different colour and style. So one possibility is people are being caught by that and clicking on something they didn't mean to. Another possibility is there's an intermittent bug. A third possibility is it's a new flight-specific charge which wasn't highlighted when they booked. But I suspect (1) or (2).

It's a BBC news article. Accessible to anyone.

EmpressSoleil · 04/12/2023 15:21

This is why I always carefully add up all costs before booking. 99% of the time, when I've factored in travel to/from the airport, baggage fees etc, it's the same or cheaper for me to go with a "better" airline from Heathrow(which is cheap for me to get to). Rather than trekking to Gatwick or Stanstead and flying with a low cost airline.

pontipinemum · 04/12/2023 15:22

@Paperbagsaremine I haven't looked myself but I have seen people giving out on various SM groups today that it came into effect in Dublin airport for certain flights. With Ryanair staff confirming it

You can check in online but to have an online boarding pass you need to book and pay for a seat. If you don’t pay for a seat, you can check in online but won’t get an eboardingpass. You will have to queue up at the airport and Ryan air will print one for you. Which doesn’t make sense because if you pay for a seat and for some reason need a paper boarding pass you have to pay them I think £60 to print one for you.

Tell that to the people who have to queue either side of my hyperactive dc 😂

I flew Ryanair yesterday from Stansted having flown out from my local airport on Friday. As I fly on my own I am quite happy with random seating.

On Friday, I had my boarding pass as usual. I checked in on Saturday evening for my return flight and it said I had to collect my BP at the airport but I could have it immediately if I paid for a seat. I decided to pay as I really didn’t want the hassle if it was busy. In reality it wasn’t- there seems to be some new check in machines in the Ryanair airport.

I talked to quite a few other passengers while waiting to board and they had chosen random seating and got their mobile boarding passes. The difference was they checked in earlier than me (within 5 -30m off check in opening whereas I checked in about 7h later.)

The issue as I see it is that with a mobile boarding pass I can go straight to security. If I have to queue to get my pass then I have to add extra time into my planning (especially at Stansted where security is very hit and miss as to how long it takes..)

I generally don’t mind Ryanair but I admit to being very annoyed yesterday as it seemed to be just a stunt to get people to book and pay for a seat!
