Ryanair new fee

I don't fly with them but feel out of fairness to anyone who does, you should be warned.

We need a modern Consumer Act to end such behaviour, at least at short notice.

Ryanair plane

Ryanair: Passengers accuse airline of 'scandalous' new fee

Passengers say they are being told to pay to get a boarding pass online or face queuing at the airport.

If you want to save time, book the seat. If you don't, queue for your boarding pass.

But what was wrong with the system where you could print your own boarding pass whether you wanted to book your seat or not?

tachycardigan · 04/12/2023 18:18

LaurieStrode · 04/12/2023 18:06

Why shouldn't people pay for what they want instead of being subsidized by others who don't want the same thing?

If you want to save time, book the seat. If you don't, queue for your boarding pass. There are perks associated with higher fares, as there always are and always will be. Don't expect first-class service for fourth-class prices.

I love airline a la carte pricing because I'm not subbing others' meals, seat selections, luggage, etc.

This doesn't make sense. A boarding pass isn't a 'perk', you need it to board the plane!

Surely it makes more sense to let people show a digital boarding pass saved on their mobile?

Exactly. Would people rather go back to the days when only a few could even contemplate air travel?

My first foreign holiday was to Italy, from Dublin, with Aer Lingus and it cost thousands (in old money) Which was huge money back then. We didn't have a foreign holiday for many years after. People are totally forgetting that this is a trade off. Ryanair is the fast food of air travel. Cheap and cheerful. But without them, there would not have been the downward pressure on prices in general. So by all means, if you don't personally like them, don't use them, but i reckon there's a big enough market out there that will.

Nsky62 · 04/12/2023 15:43

I always book priority boarding, so always pay extra worth it, more luggage allowance and I need special assistance

If you need special assistance you shouldn't have to pay for it!

enchantedsquirrelwood · 04/12/2023 18:21

You shouldn't ever have to pay for that, no.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 04/12/2023 18:23

I also confused about this, as I thought you had to pay extortionate amounts for a paper boarding pass.

So is the idea now that whatever happens, you have to pay extra for the required boarding pass.

Book seat and pay charge - get online boarding pass

Don't book seat and pay (higher) charge - get paper boarding pass.

Well good luck with that from a consumer law perspective. Even without the drip pricing issue, it's an unfair commercial practice and misleading price marketing.

NutellaEllaElla · 04/12/2023 18:23

I don't think this helps them be cheaper. (they're not even especially cheap compared to Easyjet and others). It's just a way to try to twist customers arms. Printing the boarding cards actually costs them more.

Zamzamzamdeedah · 04/12/2023 18:24

Afaik Ryanair does not charge for special assistance

lesdeluges · 04/12/2023 18:25

I'm not sure if the story is true or not, but I wish it was.

Might stop all the cheapskates who turn into entitled nutjobs with kids looking for seats together when they haven't paid for them!

Ryanair is brilliant. Absolutely great, their timings (for me) are perfect and do exactly what they say on the tin.

The only people complaining are those who are too cheap to pay for what they want, but expect it anyway.

It' not about what people want, it's about necessity. A boarding pass is a necessity if you want to board a plane. Not allowing your customers to download a boarding pass will just cause unnecessary delays.

therealcookiemonster · 04/12/2023 18:29

ultimately consumers and providers together have created a race to the bottom. reducing prices to a level which is unsustainable and then adding extra charges. as a generation we have unrealistic expectations of being able to jet off somewhere for a few quid with very little thought for the environment. and cheap budget airlines have also diminished the quality of 'standard' airlines so we are left with poor service all round and ripping off passengers at the first opportunity.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 04/12/2023 18:29

I don't think it's entitled for families to want to sit together.

I don't want to sit next to someone else's child who's been randomly given a seat next to me either.

That is one rule I would definitely change - if you book together you sit together.

I do pay for seat selection because I want to be as close to the front of the aircraft (or the rear on some aircraft types) as possible due to Brexit and long passport queues, I want the best chance of being near the front of the queue (assuming another flight hasn't just arrived in front of us which can mess up the best laid plans).

bellac11 · 04/12/2023 18:30

I wont fly with ryanair

I think we pay more but I just wont fly with them

lesdeluges · 04/12/2023 18:32

The point is, that the "entitled nutjobs" don't pay for their seats. Those who do are often asked to move to accommodate the entitled cheapskates. That's what I'm talking about.

If you pay for a seat you get a boarding pass without a fee. If you don't pay for a seat you pay for your boarding card. Very simple and (if story is true), it is levelling the playing pitch for everyone.

However, I do like the idea of them quoting the top fare and allowing deletions of the features we don't want, with the bottom line the same for everyone.

Pipistrellus · 04/12/2023 18:33

Allfur · 04/12/2023 15:02

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

Why would you if travelling alone or only an hour or two and without young children?

rookiemere · 04/12/2023 18:38

I'm still confused if they are charging it or not.

I can absolutely see charging for a service, but surely the whole point of having an online boarding pass is to save on personnel costs.

It doesn't make much sense for Ryanair to be handing out printed boarding passes for free. It increases staff costs and likelihood of people arriving late for flight and them missing their slot which will cost a fortune.

How is it 'levelling the playing field for everyone'? What about the vast majority of people who don't book their seats and are happy to sit in their allocated seat?

You haven't thought this through.

ichundich · 04/12/2023 18:38

Paperbagsaremine · 04/12/2023 15:15

I've just checked in online and have a boarding pass and just went with random seat selection.

I noticed that as I clicked through, one screen had the button for 'get me the random seat for free' in one place with one 'look' and then on the next screen, that choice was in a different place with a different colour and style. So one possibility is people are being caught by that and clicking on something they didn't mean to. Another possibility is there's an intermittent bug. A third possibility is it's a new flight-specific charge which wasn't highlighted when they booked. But I suspect (1) or (2).

They might just be trialling it on certain routes atm. Total scum of a company, but people are forced to use them because they have a monopoly over many destinations, especially in the former Eastern Bloc.

PuttingDownRoots · 04/12/2023 18:39

Its physically impossible to guarantee that everyone can sit directly next to their party. Some have ro ve split up. Plus people lay because they put different values on different seats... position on plane, aisle vs window vs middle, over the wing, near toilets etc. People like selecting their seat.

I agree, this is what the people bleating 'pay up cheapskates' don't seem to get.

FFS Do we want Ryanair to exist in the future?

They are really struggling since the Pandemic and War in Ukraine and now a giant Iceberg has broken off from the Antarctic ice sheet.... they need to do this in the face global challenges.

Reporting results for the first half of its financial year, Ryanair said profits after tax rose from €1.37bn (£1.19bn) in 2022 to €2.18bn (£1.89bn) in 2023 – representing earnings of £120 per second 6 Nov 2023

You are being very unreasonable.

MargaritaThyme · 04/12/2023 18:41

Ryanair are one of the most successful companies in Europe. Why? Because they have a ruthless focus on giving their customers what they want : Cheap, safe, (usually) reliable & punctual flying buses. They must be doing something right, because 170m passengers have flown with them so far this year.

They don’t pretend to offer frills or customer service and everyone should understand their business model by now : Very cheap basic tickets, then everything else is extra and the customer can choose to pay for only what they want.
If you don’t like Ryanair or their policies, other airlines are available so the answer is simple. Fly with someone else.

What's the rogue iceberg got to do with Ryanair's boaridng policy? If you have environment concerns say that.
