Ryanair new fee

I don't fly with them but feel out of fairness to anyone who does, you should be warned.

We need a modern Consumer Act to end such behaviour, at least at short notice.

Ryanair plane

Ryanair: Passengers accuse airline of 'scandalous' new fee

Passengers say they are being told to pay to get a boarding pass online or face queuing at the airport.

It's a BBC news article. Accessible to anyone.

True but if the OP outlined the basic detail then they will save 100 people having to go looking for it.

These threads are more frustrating than the cheap airlines.

If there wasn't a market for the cheapest possible flights, they simply wouldn't do it.

I've often thought they should start with the full cost of a ticket including all the 'extras' and then list the discounts you can have for not taking the extras. You couldn't then complain about whichever bits you'd chosen to knock off.

You have a choice anyway; if you don't like how the cheapest airlines operate you can use a different, more expensive, airline. People still flock to Ryanair, et al, though, because they want it as cheap as possible without considering the consequences of that.

Ryanair have always been money grabbing shitbags so it’s no surprise. At one point the CEO spoke about charging passengers to use the loo on board.

I remember that. It was quite prominent on the local news around here because we are near Stansted Airport, which is one of Ryanair's biggest bases. The press had a field day and the policy was dropped pretty quickly.

I also remember a newspaper article featuring a man whose grandma had died a few weeks before the booked family holiday which they were all going on. Ryanair refused to refund her ticket to them because she had only died five weeks before departure rather than six!! He took the urn with her ashes in it and strapped it into what would have been her seat next to him on the plane, telling cabin staff that this was his grandma taking up her seat in the only way possible because Ryanair had refused to refund her fare. According to the article, he got the refund very quickly after that.

They are shitty, and the management and CEO behave badly towards frontline staff and passengers alike.

It makes you wonder how their CEO has remained in post for so long, but he seems rather teflon coated and it all bounces off him, the ignoramus.

Paperbagsaremine · 04/12/2023 15:38

Ah, looking at Twitter, my suspicion now is - at least with some of the cases - that these flights have been overbooked. Years ago I had a WizzAir flight where they said, yeah you've checked in online but you have to go to a desk in the airport to get a boarding pass - that was what had happened then.
I notice at least one screenshot says "no extra charge payable" when they are saying boarding pass has to be got at the airport.

Of course with dear old RyanAir it's ENTIRELY possible that more than one thing is going on!! Why not allthe possibilities!!

Nsky62 · 04/12/2023 15:43

I always book priority boarding, so always pay extra worth it, more luggage allowance and I need special assistance

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/12/2023 15:46

But if it saves on queuing - swings and roundabouts

No, not swings and roundabouts. People are sick and tired of so-called budget airlines finding new ways of wringing more money out of people, for services which used to be included in plane ticket prices. It surely costs Ryanair less money and effort if passengers access and print out their own boarding passes, so it's completely unreasonable for them to say to passengers 'No, you now can't do that unless you pay for an extra service (allocated seating) which you may not even want (and which you used to get automatically on flights anyway)! They are money-grabbing arseholes!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 04/12/2023 15:52

meh 3 of getting home for Christmas for less than a hundred quid - nothing will stop me using them tbh unless i can actually get cheaper deals elsewhere.

GasPanic · 04/12/2023 15:55

Ryanairs overwhelming selling point is that they are cheap. To pretty much the exclusion of everything else.

If you step out of the prescribed way of doing things, either intentionally or by mistake its going to cost you. If something goes wrong, it's going to cost you.

I think most people realise this. You have your choice as to who you fly with.

I have been caught out a few times on Ryanair and I didn't complain about it because the ticket was so cheap in the first place. It's a risk I accept that every now and then something is going to go wrong with them and there is going to be a price to pay for that.

😡We need a transparent fare structure when we book. Simplicity.

I see Premier Inn are now charging for early check in too now. Any decent hotel lets you check in early for free it they have a room available.

We noticed this at a Prem we stayed in after visiting Harry Potter World too. Agree it's just fleecing people when pennies are tight enough as it is.

If you are happy to fall for their tricks then good luck to you.

But trying to navigate the whole Ryanair booking/check-in process is a minefield. I'm quite happy to get random seating, even when travelling as a family - we don't need to be joined at the hip - but this is just another step where they assume people will just cough up the dollar. Which is fine, but what starts off as a token charge soon escalates , and it trickles through to other airlines.

When Ryanair started charging to bring on a 10kg case it was a small £2 or so, now it's about £50 extra on a return flight.

The whole Priority Boarding thing is a joke. I was on a flight last year and I was one of half a dozen or so who didn't have priority boarding, so you watch, soon you'll have "VIP" boarding next, then "VIP Plus", then...

KrisAkabusi · 04/12/2023 15:59

Two pages in and everyone is ignoring the very first paragraph of the article:

Ryanair has said reports of a change to their charging policy are false and that passengers have never been charged to download boarding passes.

It's clear that this is another non-story and that somebody just fucked up their booking.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 04/12/2023 16:00

HAHHA yeah it must have been a glitch or someone left it too late to check in / download their pass @KrisAkabusi - there is nothing else about it on twitter or anything

so think its not even a thing

I flew for prices like £15 or even £9.99 so... Why not...

My first thought was that the people tried to check in early and you can do that whrn you buy seat

Fupoffyagrasshole · 04/12/2023 16:04

yes thats probably it @Zamzamzamdeedah you can only check in 24 hours before with no seat booked! sooner if you do have one!

W0tnow · 04/12/2023 16:13

Yes. I’m flying in a few hours and downloaded my boarding pass with no charge this morning. 🤷‍♀️ @Zamzamzamdeedah

RigorMortisRadio · 04/12/2023 16:18

I'm flying tomorrow morning and just downloaded my boarding pass with no issues even though I've not paid for a seat...

I stayed at a Premier Inn last month, double room for me and DH and twin room for GC. I paid when I booked and when I got to the hotel they said I had £15 outstanding to pay. I was confused and asked them to explain and it was the charge for making up a 2nd bed in the twin room. I objected and they waived it but it yet another thing to be watching out for.

"Ryanair passengers say the airline has come up with a "scandalous" new extra fee after they were charged to get their boarding passes online.
Unhappy travellers have taken to social media to express their frustration, saying they were required to pay up to £21 for a seat booking, in order to access an e-boarding pass.
The alternative was to queue for a paper pass at the airport."

They would charge for oxygen if they were allowed to

Don't put ideas into their heads. I think Ryanair actively hate their customers.

Mynewnameis · 04/12/2023 16:36

Flew with them recently and pleasantly surprised by the family ticket. Seats, luggage etc all included and much simpler than easyjet pricing.

roses2 · 04/12/2023 16:42

random seating and got their mobile boarding passes

If you want a mobile boarding pass, I assume you can still get that for free without queuing? The queue is only for physical boarding pass?

I sort of see their point. They will be paying a per boarding pass fee to the supplier who are generating the pdf boarding pass that you download so removing/making this difficult will be saving them money.

DiaNaranja · 04/12/2023 16:45

They're assholes. I've flown with them many times solo with small children, and only ever wanted to take on one hand luggage bag, as trying to keep hold of both kids and loads of luggage would be a nightmare, so I always booked for one luggage bag, which automatically gives you priority boarding for that passenger. Never had an issue, and was always happy to queue in the non priority line, as obviously hadn't paid for that for the kids, I was only paying for it to take on a carry on bag. Then one trip, I was told I had to go in the priority line, but my children (2 and 4 at the time) had to queue in the massively longer non priority line, which would have meant them being without me in the busy airport queue, through check-in, waiting in the boarding room, and boarding the plane etc. I said obviously I can't do that, and they told me I'd have to pay for priority boarding for them if we wanted to queue together! I kept reiterating that I was happy to go in the non priority queue, and was told I wasn't allowed in that queue with a bag (even though I'd paid for said bag) it caused such a hold up, was so stressful, and eventually a manager agreed I could queue in non priority, but they made such a fuss. I had done this numerous times with no hassle before, so I complained via email and they couldn't have cared less, basically said I should have paid for priority boarding and just not taken the extra bags. I didn't even want priority boarding, it was just the only way to pay for a carry on bag!? I try to avoid them at all costs now.

Nope, it's a thing. It happened to be on an outward flight last week that I checked into quite late - I queued for about 45 minutes for a boarding pass. Didn't happen on the return flight which I checked into as soon as it opened.

Extremely annoying. I have to fund my own travel and make a lot of short trips so don't need baggage allowance and have no need to book a seat for a flight lasting less than an hour.

drowningwitch · 04/12/2023 16:56

A lot of the stuff about Ryanair that gets into the press is very carefully crafted marketing. They don't mind what they look like to some people, provided they get in the news. It's easy advertising - people will see them as "cheaper" precisely because of these tactics, even if they're not much cheaper than alternatives. And if they back down from the fee at some point under pressure from the public, they will then appear magnanimous. Win win.

Digression: I try to avoid them after being stranded in a remote airport on Easter Sunday years ago with no public transport or hotels for 34.5 (!) hours (and all the Ryanair staff at the airport just went home). Work trip, too. At least I was young and fit - I felt very sorry for the older people who were forced to sleep on a cold airport floor and spend more than a day waiting for any alternative flight, food, or in fact anything from Ryaniar. But if they're the only ones with a connection somewhere, it's not always easy to avoid them.
