Ryanair new fee

I don't fly with them but feel out of fairness to anyone who does, you should be warned.

We need a modern Consumer Act to end such behaviour, at least at short notice.

Ryanair plane

Ryanair: Passengers accuse airline of 'scandalous' new fee

Passengers say they are being told to pay to get a boarding pass online or face queuing at the airport.

I suspect the story that people are having to pay for a boarding pass for a randomly selected seat is not true.

What I think most likely has happened is
a) Ryanair have overbooked some flights and on these flights, people who check in online late are not given digital boarding passes, but asked to come to the desk to get a FREE printed boarding pass. Because when they get to the desk, the airline will have a better idea of which seats are left and how to dole them out.
As is standard with all airlines, the more you pay or more status you have, the less likely you are to be bumped. The Ryanair equivalent of this is "you paid extra to select a seat, here is your boarding pass right now" haha.
b) The app is cynically designed to make it easy to end up paying to select a seat, sometimes by accident

I am watching this case with interest, so let's see if more stuff comes out. We all know software has bugs, and companies have rogue elements - or sometimes people implementing policies management don't want to make public.

But if it saves on queuing - swings and roundabouts

It doesn't save on queueing.

They have created a queue specifically for people who want to avoid paying to choose a seat to stand in for absolutely no reason other than to make it inconvenient not to pay to choose their seat.

How is it 'levelling the playing field for everyone'? What about the vast majority of people who don't book their seats and are happy to sit in their allocated seat?

You haven't thought this through.

If they don't or won't book a seat, they pay for their boarding card. If they pay for a seat they don't pay for a boarding card. I have thought about it and think it's a great idea.

There are other airlines to choose from if this process doesn't suit.

I don't think this helps them be cheaper. (they're not even especially cheap compared to Easyjet and others). It's just a way to try to twist customers arms. Printing the boarding cards actually costs them more.

Well, those who feel their arms are being twisted can select a different airline.

Levelling up may be a better way of putting it then!

So either way they pay extra and the advertised price isn't the price then?

Seriously I hope the government bans the fuck out of this shit.

@tachycardigan Ha ha These companies from Supermarkets to Airlines to ferries, are using any old excuse to rip us off, if its not the Pandemic, its Ukraine now it will be Gaza and when they run out of wars etc they turn to "Saving the Planet" anything will do, relevant or not, mentioning an Iceberg was my obviously terrible attempt at highlighting this!

Nestle recent blamed formula price rises on that they pay farmers far more..... yet research shows they have not, yet they still hike prices more than costs, same with Ryanair et al.

Our regulators are ALL on the side of industry and not on the side of the consumer.

Its time we all woke up to this.

Hilarious the way you and @lesdeluges say this as if it's your trump card.

You might find this cold comfort if the CAA gets involved.

Ah sorry! I missed the sarcasm. Thanks Smile

They won't get involved because, again, This Didn't Happen!

It's a non story. Ryanair have issued a release to say that nothing about their booking process or boarding passes has changed.

StarlightLady · 04/12/2023 19:10

The added problem is they don’t often fly from A to B as someone up thread suggested. It is often from P to Q which, in the event of a problem, can leave you stranded.

And you believe those lying **s?

boozeclues · 04/12/2023 19:14

I had this with https://m.vueling.com/ in the summer flying out to Spain from the uk.

Not heard of the airline before I googled and they have a reputation for over selling seats. Was just me a DH, short flight so not fussed for booking seats together.

You couldn’t print off a boarding pass until 24 hours before your flight unless you bought a seat. With the added risk of them reselling my “seat” I had no option but to buy an allocated seat

KrisAkabusi · 04/12/2023 19:15

MargotBamborough · 04/12/2023 19:11

Yes, because if it's a lie it will be very easy to prove. The whole BBC story in the OP is based on two unattributed twitter posts!

Frazzledatfifty · 04/12/2023 19:17

I hate the way low cost airlines surreptitiously try and get customers to pay for extras that they don’t want… I have never paid for seat selection, I don’t care where I sit and if travelling with fam or friends don’t mind being split up for a short flight. It is actually quite difficult to NOT pay for a seat as the website is designed to try and persuade you into it at every turn… I wouldn’t be surprised if some people actually don’t realise that you dom’t have to pay for a seat… It feels like a con, wish they would be more upfront about their charges! As for speedy boarding… have never wanted that… I want to be the last person on the plane not the first!

StoodySmithereens · 04/12/2023 19:22

Never used Ryanair, but I thought that had been going on for quite some time.

@StarlightLady Premier Inn are trying to force you into paying the extra £10 by not allowing check in until 4pm. You don’t get this at the Ibis. I’ve even stayed at Wetherspoons a few times as it’s cheaper, better, & you can check in at 2pm.

KrisAkabusi · 04/12/2023 19:22

I want to be the last person on the plane not the first!

That's fine, as long as you don't expect to be able to put your luggage in the overhead space!

lesdeluges · 04/12/2023 19:28

I have no affiliation with O'Leary or Ryanair, however why are many of you whingeing about having to pay for a flipping seat or a boarding card?
IF the story is true which I suspect is a publicity stunt,or a system issue, or indeed overbooking etc., then Ryanair will be delighted to have people talking about them.

That's because people like me, and there are millions like me who know the score, are prepared to pay for the times, dates and seats we want. We don't overload our bags, or bring Nellie the Elephant's trunk as hand baggage etc. etc. If kids are coming and you want them to sit with you then PAY FOR YOUR SEATS. It is outrageous that many don't and feel entitled just because they have kids so expect others to move. Not on IMV.

We could play ping pong on this all evening. But it is indeed very true that there is a choice out there, so why don't the whingers make a different choice with whom to fly? I guess I know the reason, and it's the same one the vast majority understand. Cost.

Goodornot · 04/12/2023 19:29

I wouldn't fly Ryan air if you gave me a free ticket. Provincial airports. Extra charges for everything I don't know why anyone would - it isn't cheap with all of the add ons.

MargotBamborough · 04/12/2023 19:34

KrisAkabusi · 04/12/2023 19:15

Well I don't, because Michael O'Leary is the kind of man who would prise his granny's wedding rings off her dead hands at her wake and sell them for whatever he could get. His entire business model is based on essentially lying to consumers about the cost of their flights.

lesdeluges · 04/12/2023 19:39

Just for comparison, what is the difference between EasyJet and Ryanair for example? I haven't flown EJ as they don't use the airport I regularly need. I know they have a bigger hand baggage allowance, but do they have add ons or is it a flat fare for everyone? OK I can look it up, but someone might know to save me the bother.

Overhead baggage should be banned
