Ryanair new fee

I don't fly with them but feel out of fairness to anyone who does, you should be warned.

We need a modern Consumer Act to end such behaviour, at least at short notice.

Ryanair plane

Ryanair: Passengers accuse airline of 'scandalous' new fee

Passengers say they are being told to pay to get a boarding pass online or face queuing at the airport.

Why do you have such a chip on your shoulder about non seat selectors? Do you hate the ones who don't rant when they get a middle seat ,or don't expect anyone to move for them? Do you realise that there are a lot of single travellers who don't care where they sit or who they sit with?

I enjoy the banter, for that is all I am doing. I really couldn't care less what people pay for or don't pay for. I have graciously surrendered my aisle seat to a kid so that he (about 12 years old) could sit opposite his Mummy. No problem, but I had paid for that seat, they hadn't.

Your situation is different, but to be fair it suits some people who actually SHOULD pay for seats not to do so, knowing that the vast majority of decent people (including myself) will surrender their seat (through gritted teeth sometimes I admit), in order for the flight to take off and not miss its slot!

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

I don’t mind where I sit so wouldn’t pay to pick a seat!

rookiemere · 04/12/2023 21:17

I've checked on the Ryanair website and app and there is nothing about this change in policy.

The one thing I will say about them is when they changed the carry on baggage allowance, it was very clearly stated and emails were sent with a picture with dimensions on what is allowed.

Their whole, business model is based on speedy turnaround. It isn't logical that they would deliberately introduce something they weren't charging for that would require more personnel.

Anyway I'm hoping they get it sorted for my flights in May as seats are now minimum £10 each and as I genuinely don't care where I sit, I don't want to be paying that.

I couldn't find anything either on their website when I checked in on Thursday night. I was even wondering if there was an issue with my ID and they needed to manually check it.

@evilharpy is this a flight from the UK ? They do flag up some countries on their app that don't accept online boarding passes.

Definitely not on the list that don't accept them - I've done it countless times over many years.

But if it saves on queuing - swings and roundabouts

Probably many are scared of not having seats so the queue may actually be minimal

Two pages in and everyone is ignoring the very first paragraph of the article:

Ryanair has said reports of a change to their charging policy are false and that passengers have never been charged to download boarding passes.

It's clear that this is another non-story and that somebody just fucked up their booking.

It happened to me yesterday. And I am a seasoned Ryanair traveller! As I said earlier other people who checked in earlier than me got their mobile passes even though they had random seating. I checked in at about 9pm for a 1.30pm flight the following day!

And technically Ryanair are correct - they didn’t charge me to download my mobile pass. However I could not get one unless I paid for a seat. I could get one for free if I was willing to risk a long queue at the airport…

So it is happening - just not to everyone!

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2023 21:51

Allfur · 04/12/2023 15:02

Why wouldn't you pay for seat selection

Because you are traveling alone and it really doesn't matter to you.

However I'm against flattening fees too much as well - the idiots who pay for a second bag can keep doing that. I'm happy with cheaper fares and less luggage tbh.

EtiennePalmiere · 04/12/2023 21:59

Agreed, I don't care in the least where I sit, pack light and bring my own snacks instead of paying 5 euro for Pringles so tiered pricing works for me.
I did run into something similar with Vueling recently, I couldn't check in online without paying because all the no-fee seats were taken, so had to go to the counter, where they gave me an exit row for free ! Strange.

Themelba · 04/12/2023 22:06

KrisAkabusi · 04/12/2023 19:09

You might find this cold comfort if the CAA gets involved.

They won't get involved because, again, This Didn't Happen!

It's a non story. Ryanair have issued a release to say that nothing about their booking process or boarding passes has changed.

It has happened if you actually read my post on the first page.

I regularly fly with them. I am happy to fly with them as they go to the airport I need to go to from my home to that of my daughter. But this did happen to me yesterday. I had 2 options:

(1) Pay for a seat and get my mobile boarding pass
(2) Don’t pay for a seat and get my boarding pass for free at the airport.

With option 2 I would have an unknown amount of time queuing so I chose option 1!

I want to be the last person on the plane not the first!

That's fine, as long as you don't expect to be able to put your luggage in the overhead space!

Well lots of people don't do priority boarding and aren't arsed about the overhead lockers.

On two of the last three flights back to the UK, I've seen Ryanair attendants randomly pick on a passenger about their bag size despite half the queue having similar or bigger sized bags.

The first guy got into an argument and got offloaded I believe (not a smart move on the last flight out of France for two days due to a strike).

The second woman managed to get her bag into the box but the way she was treated was appalling.

The attendant nearly went for DH cos he was carrying two bags - his own and our nine year olds. She was really rude (DH was unwaveringly polite).

But I think they have an issue either with overbooking or trying to squeeze a few more quid out of passengers and there's a directive out to get so many passengers per flight on rule infringements.

I think this one is just a way of ramping up the basic cost of flights for the cheapest tickets without being honest about it and so they can advertise the lower price.

One reason DH and I always travel light is to reduce time taken at check in and security. Having to queue for a pass will defeat that for many who use ryanair as a bus service.

I think there needs to be a balance between false advertising and fleecing those who are happy to go the whole no-frills.

Sorry - I don’t mean to continually quote you but I would actually like to defend Ryanair on this. If you travel with just one piece of hand luggage it has to go under your seat. If you have paid to have an extra bag then you can put it above. And they only sell so many extra bags so there is always enough place! I have never seen a lack of place in the over heads unlike on BA where it is free to have a second bag and often it is impossible to use the overheads so the hand luggage goes in the hold!

unsync · 04/12/2023 22:24

TBH it's just another reason to not fly with them.

I always check in quite last minute with Ryanair as it often means you get extra legroom or seats right at the front (quick disembark) because no one has paid for it.

KimberleyClark · 05/12/2023 08:58

StarlightLady · 04/12/2023 20:11

Why? Newer aircraft have larger overheads, and you know your luggage will be at the right airport when you get off. What harm does it do to those who opt not to use the overheads.

It delays boarding while everyone is faffing about with their huge hand luggage, often resulting in take off slots being missed, and delays disembarkation at the other end too. Personally I think if you can’t carry it in your hand or over your shoulder it’s not hand luggage and should go in the hold.

I work in the industry. It rarely delays boarding compared with waiting for hold luggage loading to be completed. Boarding is often complete and pax seated while hold luggage is still being loaded.

On arrival the hold has to be off loaded, this again can lead to longer time on the ground and missed slots. A lot of smaller airports have difficulty with staff levels coping with the peak season.

The reason why many short haul carriers charge extra for bags to go on the hold is not so much to rip you off. They want to do all they can to discourage you from checking bags in.

DappledThings · 05/12/2023 09:45

I love flown with Ryanair loads of times. Never had an issue. Happy to take a tiny bag where I can. I've never paid for any extras and felt like I've got an absolute bargain.

I don't expect anything from them other than to get me where I want to go for very little money.

This latest might be a bit annoying having to queue up but not that bad.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 05/12/2023 09:59

kitsuneghost · 04/12/2023 19:40

Overhead baggage should be banned

Well if they want to do that, they are going to have vastly improve baggage handling so it never gets lost and comes off the plane within a few minutes.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 05/12/2023 10:01

This has now reached the Times, so I don't think it's as much of a non story as Ryanair is claiming.

Mine’s never been lost and is there as soon as I clear passport control - especially at Stansted where the queues to get into the country are interminable.

People are really inconsiderate with baggage imo
Bigger overheads is even worse
Plane stops and everyone is out their seat quick as dragging down heavy bags on top of you
Boarding takes ages while everyone faffs about getting their stuff in overhead lockers.
People everyone trying to get security / exits with people dragging big bags with no awareness of others around them

They are just awful

On the last six flights I've had with RyanAir, I think its been a problem on 2 of the flights.

Personally I think they should ban people from flying if they can't cope with one bag without a valid reason. That'd show the annoying bastards.

And Ryanair should definitely look into fineing people who clap on landing.
