Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

I agree, however I do love the price jumping down at the end.

VickyEadieofThigh · 31/10/2023 09:19

How is getting your card scanned - which takes a few seconds - a "massive palaver at the tills"?

peppermintcrisp · 31/10/2023 09:19

No it is awful and stopped going there unless I have no other option.

blobby10 · 31/10/2023 09:20

I opt for any other store over Tesco (and Sainsburys) whenever I can due to this pricing stuff. I'm well aware that it won't affect either store in any way but it makes me feel a bit better. Since I got rid of my Clubcard and Nectar card I've hardly had any junk mail so we know what they do with the data they get!!

She said if you don't have it handy, it causes a palaver! My local Tesco is very good, the staff just get another card and scan it so you still get the cheaper price.

BrioLover · 31/10/2023 09:21

Sainsbury’s have just started the same thing with Nectar! Did my shop at the weekend, realised it was no cheaper than Ocado even with the 'Nectar prices' and thought fuck it I may as well keep having my shopping delivered

Planesplanesplanes · 31/10/2023 09:22

Sainsbury is the same. I hate it. I just want to go, pay for stuff (much easier if they have a person on the till or enough people cover the self service tills when they don’t work) and go.

GladysHeeler · 31/10/2023 09:23

I don't go anymore. It's not about the difficulty of scanning the card. Although I don't like the pressure of remembering to scan it! And at ours, the mobile signal is poor so if it's on the app it sometimes doesn't open.

It just feels like trickery. I don't like to think of people not being able to understand the pricing.

DampityDamp · 31/10/2023 09:23

So don’t go and let the rest of us be happy with cheaper pricing?

Or just put the Clubcard on your phone. It’s not hard Confused

fedupwithbeinghot · 31/10/2023 09:23

the card is kept in my phone "wallet" and the till person always asks if you have it with you. I don't find it too complicated and I love the discounts.

UnbeatenMum · 31/10/2023 09:24

I hate it too. I don't really shop in Tesco and don't carry my purse around so I was desperately trying to get the app to download on holiday after realising my shopping was going to cost way more than it should. Actually put stuff back because I was in a poor signal area and couldn't get it to download.

  1. You don’t need to remember, it does that for you
  2. Just put it in your phone wallet, no need for signal
  3. It’s not deceptive, it’s very clearly stated

I don't get any junk mail at all and I have a clubcard and a nectar card 🤷🏻‍♀️

CeeJay81 · 31/10/2023 09:27

Keep your tesco card in your phone wallet. That way you always have it with you. I never go anywhere without my phone. I shop online quite them though, so thats all taken care of

Edited

They're not discounts, it's been shown that the prices are just what they were before these cards were introduced and the other prices have just been inflated to make it appear like the card gives a discount.

Of course! Others seem to think they're getting a bargain!

BoohooWoohoo · 31/10/2023 09:29

I don't mind companies like Tesco, Sainsburys and Boots knowing my purchasing habits but accept that 2 tier pricing is problematic for some people like teenagers who can't get a meal deal discount because they are too young to register a loyalty card. Supermarket pricing has always been about smoke and mirrors imo. Some items fluctuate in price so often that you lose sight of what a reasonable price for the item is.

I hardly ever go in tbf, but we went to look at Halloween costumes and saw a toy my child wants for Christmas, it was half the price of everywhere else with the Clubcard, normal price without. I checked google, and looked on the normal places we buy toys (Smyths, Amazon, Entertainer) on my phone whilst we were in there and they were all twice the price of the Clubcard price. So there are some “real” savings.

This is the scenario that pisses me off about it. Some love it, but if you don't want to go there all the time it's not user friendly and causes embarrassment/ issues!

Given that the Tesco Clubcard was introduced in 1995, I'd be pretty chuffed if I could get the same prices as before they were introduced!

(I know, I know - you obviously meant "before Clubcard pricing was introduced" but just let me enjoy my moment of smug pedantry!!)

Mumsgirls · 31/10/2023 09:38

I have a Tesco fob on my key ring, so I always have it as never go without the car. I know it’s old school, but easier for me than the app. Also easy when I get petrol

Notanotherhousepost · 31/10/2023 09:38

I don't know why people have a problem with this.

Some people do something for a discount others don't

To be honest, its like when they introduced the price cap on utilities - the savvy ended up paying more because some people were too lazy to shop around

BananaSlug · 31/10/2023 09:38

Sainsbury’s do it now so not just Tesco. I shop with Asda now for this reason.

Coffeerum · 31/10/2023 09:41

Don't they all do this now?
Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Boots etc.

Just save the card on your phone, it isn't really that much faff.

Asda basically do it by another name though as they give money back via their card.
