Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

They're not discounts, it's been shown that the prices are just what they were before these cards were introduced and the other prices have just been inflated to make it appear like the card gives a discount.

The Sainsbury's ones are. I notice it on regular things that I buy - they're the normal price without the Nectar discount.

WilmaWonka · 31/10/2023 09:45

You normally get a small card that fits on house/car key chain with the normal card. You can also take a pic of the card and scan it from your phone.

No idea why people would have an issue with it.

Themostimportantpart · 31/10/2023 09:45

I forgot my phone once and asked a member of staff if he had a Clubcard I could scan - he did otherwise I would have put the items back.

But that's just what sales are.
I last worked in retail around 2010 and we used to 'FMU' products when they'd come in ie 'false mark up' then sit with a red pen and 'discount' them back down again.

fishfingersandtoes · 31/10/2023 09:47

I've stopped shopping there for this reason

IncompleteSenten · 31/10/2023 09:47

I'm paying less in shops that have these things than i would without them so it'd be daft to not use it.

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:48

Went to Lidl instead. Next door. So.
Much. Easier. Every day low pricing so not as hard to work out. Bag of gala apples 6p cheaper than in Tesco on Clubcard. Tesco wanted 95p from the faithful, almost twice that from everyone else. Lidl wanted 85p from everyone! I just think Tesco is stuck in the 90s taking customers for granted with its oversized stores and fake promotions.

Rant over! I know I am YABU. Tesco just gives me the supermarket ick!

All my loyalty cards are on my Apple Watch.
makes life so much easier.

Applerumleandcustard · 31/10/2023 09:48

I’ve got a little club card that hangs on my key ring ,as I can’t get to Tesco without my car , it makes it very easy

ticketstickets · 31/10/2023 09:48

since i figured out how to add it to my google wallet its not really a big deal. I anyway have to open my google wallet to pay usually.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 31/10/2023 09:48

@Fahbeep You won’t have any good coping skills if anything really bad happens in your life like your dh getting a cancer that has no known treatment, your mil neglecting him so you have to give up a professional career to care for him 24/7 on your own and struggle to get back into employment while bills pile up after he dies young.

Remembering to take a clubcard into Tesco will look so easy by comparison.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/10/2023 09:49

I agree. I think the price should be the price, to all shoppers equally. It's just another layer of bullshit we have to deal with.

Assuming you're in UK, isn't that illegal? Items have to be at the higher price for a certain number of days before you can have them on sale.

Ihateslugs · 31/10/2023 09:50

The coop card is quite good, it’s a cash back type where you get x amount for every pound you spend - can’t remember the exact amount but it soon adds up if you do your main shop there.

The downside is that prices in my local coop are higher than in Tesco for many things.

I am currently unable to physically walk round a shop so am getting all my shopping online at Tesco so am getting reduced club card prices but obviously I’m not accruing money on my coop card which I used to save to buy alcohol at Christmas!

You don't need to open google wallet to pay on your phone. It just needs to be unlocked

Coffeerum · 31/10/2023 09:42

Asda basically do it by another name though as they give money back via their card.

That’s fine but I can still get the offers without needing a card unlike Tesco where you need the card or pay full price.

Nousernamesleftatall · 31/10/2023 09:51

Yanbu. I actively avoid Tesco for this very reason.

Cheers for this! I be coped with plenty thanks. This was just a light hearted non-earth shattering moan!

Doesn't bother me. You're not forced to shop there 🤷

LubaLuca · 31/10/2023 09:52

Seriously, it's not a big deal to have the card in your phone wallet or on your keyring. I hate having to jump through hoops to get little things, but this definitely doesn't fall into that category. Same with the Sainsbury nectar thing, although their shelf edge 'special price' labelling is less easy to spot and read than Tesco's.

Vote with your feet though. I can't imagine Aldi will ever have this kind of thing, they're a safe choice for anyone who doesn't like loyalty cards etc.

VeridicalVagabond · 31/10/2023 09:52

It's my regular supermarket so doesn't bother me as I always have my little fob on my keys. Never go anywhere without my keys so never forget my card with me.

Get that it's frustrating for people who don't shop there regularly though, or just pop in for one or two things and have to pay the inflated prices because they can't access their app.

People do need to stop deluding themselves that you're getting discounts with the clubcard - you're just getting the price. Shopping there without a clubcard is hideous. Which is why they do it. It's bollocks, but it is what it is.

Dipsomaniax · 31/10/2023 09:53

Another one hee who has stopped shopping in Tesco for that reason. There's plenty of decent competition where I live so I will not miss supporting Tesco.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 31/10/2023 09:53

I like Tesco. It works for me. I'm a single mum and have a child with additional needs. I also don't drive. Since she was in a pram, or now a trolley, I simply walk in, scan my clubcard and take a hand scanner then proceed round. When I go to the checkout and scan the barcode with the hand scanner, I don't have to remember to scan my clubcard (not that I'd forget anyway), and my shopping is already packed and discount simply comes off total.

As for anyone moaning about clubcards taking your data, if you own a mobile phone or indeed use the Internet, your data is all collected anyway. A clubcard is the tip of the iceberg ffs.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 31/10/2023 09:54

The trend to two tier pricing over proper loyalty rewards is awful. Tesco devalued their Clubcard points and introduced fake overpricing for people without the card. Sainsbury's do this as well. I'm sure other places do too. It feels like a kick in the teeth when prices are going up so much - like 'be loyal to us and we will only gouge you on some prices and not all'
