Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

I've stopped going there. There is no mobile reception in my local tescos, ad every single time I can't connect to the app. Luckily last time I used the woman behind me's club card, and saved £25! I swore then, even though it my nearest super market, I wouldn't be returning.

Honestly this baffles me.

You can save £25. You decide not to go to Tesco even so - when you could just bring your Clubcard or add the Tesco card to your wallet, if the mobile coverage is such an issue.

Normal pricing is what you would pay at most other shops.

But you seem insistent on this! Maybe it's true in some areas, but in mine, the reduction is cheaper than what I would pay for the same product elsewhere.

(Full disclosure, grocery prices are insane in Ireland atm, perhaps worse than the UK)

This has also been confirmed by the research that was conducted by Which and reported in the news a few months ago.

There may be some exceptions where the clubcard price is the best price you’ll get. However in general Which found that clubcard prices involve a lot of smoke and mirrors.

So don’t go and let the rest of us be happy with cheaper pricing?

Or just put the Clubcard on your phone. It’s not hard Confused

Agree. Ive also got one on my key ring.

Easy.

Normal pricing is what you would pay at most other shops.

For example I went to Tesco once to buy a jar of coffee. It was £6, with a special clubcard discount to £4. I went down the road to Asda instead, and bought the same jar of coffee for £4 without any silly made up discounts applied.

My point is, it doesn't matter if they are charging you more (relatively) for not having a clubcard, or less (relatively) for having one. All you need to do is decide whether you want to participate in the scheme for the benefit of the (relatively) lower price or not. The fact you might be able to get it down the road for the lower price (without a clubcard) is not relevant.

Everythinghasgonetoshit · 31/10/2023 11:07

This is why i shop at Aldi. They aren't DESPERATE for you personal information.

I avoid Tesco and Sainsburys. If I do go in there and it is much more expensive for card holders I go somewhere else. I am too busy for this two tier pricing shit. Luckily I lice near town so I have four different places to choose from.

Newthingsahead · 31/10/2023 11:07

I can genuinely never understand the angst over this that gets mentioned a lot on MN
Doesn't bother me at all

BoardOfMuffins · 31/10/2023 11:07

I have a Tesco credit card so earn clubcard points without even stepping foot inside a Tesco. It has given me money off hotels abroad, paid for entry into places like Legoland and other highly priced theme parks, RAC membership, magazine subscriptions and it didn't cost me anything. Just shopping as normal wherever I choose. I get more Clubcard points if I shop in Tesco but it is quite a journey from where I live.

All loyalty cards are there to harvest your shopping data from you. I am also on Google Rewards and get money for uploading copies of reciepts, just done Aldi this morning. That is also money for nothing and I can spend it on Google Play audio books. In the Asda rewards app I have almost £100 to spend, just building it up for Christmas. Money for nothing. I think it is brilliant.

Things like B&Q, Tesco, M&S Sparks are all stored on my phone in the wallet. Easy to open before you get into the shop and have it ready once you unlock your phone.

stayathomer · 31/10/2023 11:09

We were just talking about this morning- Tesco is now easily one of the most expensive shops here (Ireland), and to have a normal price advertised like it’s a deal whilst putting the over inflated price next to it really irritates me! Plus surely illegal really, you have to sign up to something to pay the normal price!! I know everyone’s saying it’s no big deal but it really is when Tesco isn’t your usual place of shopping and you’re not tech savvy (my mum would not have a clue!) or the stupid app stops working (happened me when I was on a trip away last month and I put everything back as couldn’t afford the upper end price)

electriclight · 31/10/2023 11:10

I don't see what's wrong with offering discounts to customers willing to join the loyalty scheme.

If you are worried about them learning things about your buying habits, it's not compulsory to join.

If you don't care about them learnings things about your buying habits, and can cope with storing the card in your wallet app, and like getting a discount, it's a good option and I like it.

Why should they reduce prices for everyone? They are trying to incentivise certain behaviours such as joining their scheme, shopping there more regularly to get discounts etc.

I'm really baffled people didn't work this out. It was glaringly obvious from the word go. You are basically paying much more than the average price if you are not in the scheme. The only benefit you get by being in the scheme is not being utterly ripped off. I don't care if I can just add the card to my keyring. They can fuck off if that is the best they can come up with in trying to lure me there.

It is more than a faff if you don't have a smartphone or are somewhere where you are at risk of being robbed for your phone. The elderly and disabled in the poorest areas are being at risk due to this increased necessity to carry a phone everywhere.

Carry the physical card or key fob instead.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 11:11

However in general Which found that clubcard prices involve a lot of smoke and mirrors.

I'm not necessarily doubting this - as presumably the Which studies compared a range of products & found a particular trend.

My point is different.

I check the products I need, knowing the local prices. I do always manage to find a selection of Clubcard offer products that are substantially cheaper than other local prices.

I accept that relies on me specifically choosing certain products (not my whole shop) and also knowing prices - which I do as my grocery shop (single parent with 3 teens) is a huge part of my monthly outgoings & so I'm hyper aware of prices.

In Ireland, Tesco prices are lower overall (normal pricing) than the other main Irish supermarkets (SuperValu & Dunnes) but I don't like the sometimes limited product range & Dunnes €10 off vouchers allow me to significantly reduce my bill each week & to justify 'treats' or nice meat etc

I have tried multiple times to add it to my wallet. Every time clubcard says it's not linked to a card. I call up customer services, they tell me there is no problem.

Not using tescos anymore isn't that much of a bother though. I get 90% of my shopping online and if I haven't got something I either go to the little coop we have nearby, or I just replan the meal.

electriclight · 31/10/2023 11:16

I don't see how it's a con when both prices are clearly displayed.

People keep referring to the 'elderly and vulnerable with no smartphone or internet access' but you don't need either to look at a price and hand over your physical discount card.

It's not a con if it's really simple to understand, optional and open to everyone.

fearfuloffluff · 31/10/2023 11:16

I agree, I hate it. The answer is to avoid Tesco and any of the other supermarkets that do this. Easier said than done though!

They've gone from paying you about £2 a year in points to gather your personal data (very bad deal) to massively penalising you if you won't agree to that deal by using their card. Absolute sharks.

mokjkjjo · 31/10/2023 11:17

IncompleteSenten · 31/10/2023 09:50

Assuming you're in UK, isn't that illegal? Items have to be at the higher price for a certain number of days before you can have them on sale.

I worked in retail while studying and the store I worked in did this too. This was in the UK.

I hate the two tier pricing with loyalty cards. My DH forgot to scan his nectar card and ended up paying £7 extra for an item recently. The item is the cheaper price in other stores which makes it even more annoying.

electriclight · 31/10/2023 11:18

I'm pleased if it stops people going though as I prefer shorter queues.

I guess it must work for them, as a business model, or they'd have stopped doing it by now.

RaraRachael · 31/10/2023 11:18

It's not a "massive palaver" . I take my Clubcard out along with my Debit card at the till. It takes seconds and saves me a lot of money.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 31/10/2023 11:18

I think Tesco is fantastic.

The points alone are worth having a tesco Clubcard.

I’d be buying the shopping anyway, so I might as well get money off and earn points at the same time.

Doesn't the fact it works for them as a business model while dividing people 50:50 and putting a lot of people off their stores make you stop and 🤔 about whether you're really getting a good deal?

Went to Lidl instead. Next door. So.
Much. Easier. Every day low pricing so not as hard to work out. Bag of gala apples 6p cheaper than in Tesco on Clubcard. Tesco wanted 95p from the faithful, almost twice that from everyone else. Lidl wanted 85p from everyone! I just think Tesco is stuck in the 90s taking customers for granted with its oversized stores and fake promotions.

Rant over! I know I am YABU. Tesco just gives me the supermarket ick!

You know Lidl offers discounts with their loyalty card right?

That’s exactly why I don’t like it. Get a clubcard and we won’t rip you off. No thanks, I’ll go elsewhere.

It is amazing how many people do fall for it and think they are getting great deals
though.

There is barely any mobile reception in my local store so the clubcard prices can delay me by a minute or two at the checkout which is annoying. I can't screenshot the QR code either.

You shouldn't need a signal to open the app and see your clubcard. I've just put my phone in airplane mode so that there would be no signal. It opened the app, there was a red "No internet" warning, but I could still click on the clubcard button and see the qr code.

Alargeoneplease89 · 31/10/2023 11:31

Just get it on your phone? It's really not difficult.

Nope because it's a complete non issue for me
