Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

Didn't they tell you that you can reclaim your discounts and any points within two weeks, with your receipt and your card?

It is very easy to use - but if you want to use it on a different phone to normal, it stands to reason that you need to have it set up in advance, for security reasons. You wouldn't want someone else to help themselves to your clubcard vouchers, would you?

Well they would need my account details and password. No she didn't tell me that she was really unhelpful I don't think I would have done that anyway just in case they refused when I tried to do it her only suggestion was to go home and come back, I wouldn't really care if someone used my club card tbh I mean it's hardly a massive deal if someone hacked my account to use my club card I think scammers would have better things to do. Was just easier to go over to Morrison's where I didn't need a card.

BananaSlug · 07/12/2023 21:17

And I have about £3 in club card vouchers as I don't go there often anyway

Ah, so it should be ok to let someone access your account with no validation because you don't have much clubcard vouchers to lose.. not really sure that's how that works...

MassageForLife · 07/12/2023 21:24

Ooh I understand you now! Yes, but hackers are a thing.

Why do you fumble with your phone? It's hardly onerous? You could have a key fob, if you fumble?

Do you have shares? Of all things to say what you want your Tesco shopping experience to be like, a luxury window and door company is just bizarre!

You can get £21.50 and even more removed from your bill if you shop in Lidl, Iceland, or Aldi, and not Tesco. No need for a clubcard. Just cheaper prices all round.

No you can't , you are not comparing like with like.

@FreshWinterMorning but not all of us have time to go to more than one supermarket, nor have Aldi and Lidl nearby.

As this thread has proved, tesco seem to have stores where no other stores are available.

Our small city doesn’t have a Tesco. We have Asda, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, B&M, but not even a small Tesco. Have to drive to the next town if we want Tesco.

Strangely Tesco security systems are specifically designed for you, I'm glad they protect your vouchers from hackers, collecting the.points is the only other reason to have a clubcard

Should be interesting to watch. 'LOYALTY CARDS - ARE THEY WORTH IT?'Wink Wednesday 10th January at 9pm Channel 5. I am certainly looking forward to it!

I think it will just confirm what I already suspect - (that most store loyalty card/clubcards are a data-harvesting scam.) But it will be interesting to see what they have to say about it!

Do loyalty cards data harvest then @FreshWinterMorning, if only someone had mentioned it!

🙄

Only in the same way that checkout tills do. Itemised receipts and payment by card do exactly the same thing.

Goodlard · 06/01/2024 19:01

@BIossomtoes of the humiliation of them knowing I buy multi packs of walkers crisps! I was hoping to take that knowledge to the grave with me!

No, they don't. Sure, they know what you happen to have purchased all at once, but payment details are encrypted and it's not possible to link all your visits together and connect them to the same individual.

BIossomtoes · 06/01/2024 20:19

The last four digits of the card aren’t encrypted. Clearly you have no idea how smart technology is now.

Goodlard · 06/01/2024 20:19

@PrimitivePerson so they'll not know until buy multi bags of crisps then..... phew!

Goodlard · 06/01/2024 20:59

@BIossomtoes surely they won't pick up on the Ben & jerrys!

I'll pay cash everywhere, only used notes obviously!

Definitely the B&J - don’t even think of buying Lindor, will you? The consequences could be catastrophic!

You obviously don’t either.

Retailers cannot store your card details without your express permission so they cannot use any information they may glean from your weekly shop to target you. They may know that a card ending in 1234 buys ice cream every Saturday but there’s no advantage to this information over a cash purchase as they cannot use it to target you.

Transactions made with Apple or Google Pay use a virtual credit card number and are very difficult to link together. Eventually credit cards will go the same way.

With a loyalty card you expressly opt in to data storage and targeting. They’re not in any way comparable.

This thread baffles me. I can only imagine my Tesco must be different 🤷‍♀️

The Clubcard offers are usually on one item within a range. That’s it. So if you choose one of the many, many other versions of that item, you are not in any way affected.

For example, the best Clubcard price I’ve had recently was on a branded jar of coffee. As we know, all jars of coffee are insanely expensive now. I actually checked online, and this brand of coffee was retailing at £5.50 in all of the major supermarkets. But Clubcard price was £2.95. So I bought it.

Those who didn’t have a Clubcard would have paid the regular price that was the same as Asda, Sainsburys etc. Alternatively, people could just buy one of the many, many brands uninvolved in the offer.

No bullying. Just choice. There is some top quality MN drama on this thread!

Exactly.

Lidl's knockoff Bailey's is cheaper still and just as nice
