Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

So don’t go and let the rest of us be happy with cheaper pricing?

Or just put the Clubcard on your phone. It’s not hard Confused

It's not cheaper pricing. That's the point. Clubcard pricing is "normal" and everything else is inflated.

It's a con.

Pipistrellus · 31/10/2023 10:36

There is barely any mobile reception in my local store so the clubcard prices can delay me by a minute or two at the checkout which is annoying. I can't screenshot the QR code either.

Pipistrellus · 31/10/2023 10:37

VickyEadieofThigh · 31/10/2023 09:19

How is getting your card scanned - which takes a few seconds - a "massive palaver at the tills"?

It can take up to a couple of minutes for the app as there is no reception in my local store.

Londonscallingme · 31/10/2023 10:38

I have a picture of the clubcard QR code (it's on the little keyring tag they give you) on my phone which scans fine. Otherwise i'd always be forgetting it.

saveforthat · 31/10/2023 10:40

It's not really a con because it's so easy to compare prices nowadays and clubcard prices often come out lower than anyware else, the coffee I like, e.g. is cheaper than Asda etc. I also have a Tesco credit card which doubles as a clubcard so no faff with finding it at the tills but I do have most of my groceries delivered.

PawsisShady · 31/10/2023 10:41

I don't even know where my club card is Blush
We don't have a Tesco (except a tiny express one) so it's a treat if I get to go Grin

Well it's relative isn't it, one is higher one is lower - there is no such thing as 'normal' pricing, only what the company is prepared to sell it to you for. They are prepared to sell some items at a lower price to people with clubcards (presumably because they think it will drive loyalty and they benefit from the data they gather when you use your clubcard).

It's not a con because it's totally transparent what you need to do to benefit from the lower pricing and it's open to all to participate. You are not required to participate if you are happy to pay the higher price.

Definitely Lidl. You get all your stuff cheaper. Except it turns to mush before you eat it. Which is ok because you're pre occupied with your canoe and cheap power tools that you didn't need.

😂

LeopardPJS · 31/10/2023 10:43

Yes the practice @CatamaranViper refers to is illegal in the UK @IncompleteSenten and in fact I think the whole ‘club card price’ thing is an attempt to get around the laws on sale pricing, which supermarkets kept previously getting in trouble for breaking. It drives me mad too. Total scam

PabloandGustheGreySquirrels · 31/10/2023 10:44

God it makes me cringe when grown adults say "Rant over" & "End of" (It's usually "End off" 😆)

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:46

enchantedsquirrelwood · 31/10/2023 10:30

These discounts aren't really discounts - Which? has found evidence of the supermarkets whacking up the prices a couple of weeks before and then "discounting" them for loyalty card holders. In effect you are getting the original price.

The Competition and Markets Authority is investigating this area, and the government consulted on changes to consumer law recently as well.

Well, again, I can confirm that the prices are cheaper than the equivalent local prices where I am? including other supermarkets. That's why I buy some items this way. Works well for store cupboard items, yogurts & similar.

I do accept that for some items this holds true, often confectionary for example.

I opt for any other store over Tesco (and Sainsburys) whenever I can due to this pricing stuff. I'm well aware that it won't affect either store in any way but it makes me feel a bit better. Since I got rid of my Clubcard and Nectar card I've hardly had any junk mail so we know what they do with the data they get!!

Getting rid of your cards won't have removed you from mailing lists. You were on mailing lists because you didn't read the privacy police's or opt out when signing up for things.

I don't agree with 2 tier pricing.
Also annoys me I have to remember to take a club card etc out with me.
I don't want cards etc on my phone
Can't we just have triple points instead of these fake prices

Don't you have a purse?

Viviennemary · 31/10/2023 10:47

Its cheeky but they are all at it. Sainsburys and co-op.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 10:49

Google Wallet/G Pay/Apple Pay does the same.

And, knowing Google, that's an extra tier to be harvesting and selling your data!

That will throw up a warning on their system, the other shopper looks like they are using someone else's card to pay for their bill, unless the first customer pays in cash.

? They don't check the name on the loyalty card against the name on the payment card!

I don't think you can use the same card at the same time for two transactions, can you? Presumably, if you stop a customer in Tesco who has a Clubcard, they're expecting to use it themselves.

Also, people are so scared of scams these days, they may well think that you're somehow trying to do this to them - even though I don't think it would be possible to do with just a Clubcard.

I suppose, if it's somewhere where your purchases generate extra discount vouchers, you could skew their profile. Ask an elderly person if you can borrow their card, thinking they might appreciate the extra points - then they end up getting vouchers for nappies and baby food instead of the ones for coffee and bread that they might actually want to use!

I like the Scan & Shop/Shop & Go or whatever they call it, but if I need to grab anything for work, for which I need a separate receipt, I have to put it aside and go to a robot till afterwards to pay for it separately.

viques · 31/10/2023 10:51

I don’t bother about club card harvesting ( I pay by a Tesco bank card so always have details available) I don’t care who is monitoring my shopping trolley, but I really really hate self service tills. Shopping in store will be a nightmare when people are trying to do huge Christmas shops, I feel for the poor staff members they put on to the self service tills, they are run off their feet as it is, and I imagine they will be subject to horrendous nastiness when things get fraught and stressful.

Same here, last time I stood at the door of the shop for 5 mins, trying to get the app to load to access the club card QR code. I use apple pay for everything so only take my phone when I leave the house

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 31/10/2023 10:53

It's not really a con because it's so easy to compare prices nowadays

It's easy if you're online and/or easily mobile/have ready transport. There are plenty of elderly and disabled folk who still struggle to be able to access the best deals.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:55

@Pipistrellus @Jumperhermit

Just add the Clubcard to your Apple Wallet. No need to use the app at all then.

Normal pricing is what you would pay at most other shops.

For example I went to Tesco once to buy a jar of coffee. It was £6, with a special clubcard discount to £4. I went down the road to Asda instead, and bought the same jar of coffee for £4 without any silly made up discounts applied.

justteanbiscuits · 31/10/2023 10:57

I've stopped going there. There is no mobile reception in my local tescos, ad every single time I can't connect to the app. Luckily last time I used the woman behind me's club card, and saved £25! I swore then, even though it my nearest super market, I wouldn't be returning.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 11:01

Normal pricing is what you would pay at most other shops.

But you seem insistent on this! Maybe it's true in some areas, but in mine, the reduction is cheaper than what I would pay for the same product elsewhere.

(Full disclosure, grocery prices are insane in Ireland atm, perhaps worse than the UK)

PrimitivePerson · 31/10/2023 11:02

I don't do loyalty cards of any description on principle. I'm sick of being tracked and monitored the whole time, everywhere I go.

Most of the time I don't use a smartphone either.

KimberleyClark · 31/10/2023 11:02

I use my key ring for all my loyalty cards. No palaver at all to have them handy. Never bother with the app.

stayathomer · 31/10/2023 11:02

(I know, I know - you obviously meant "before Clubcard pricing was introduced" but just let me enjoy my moment of smug pedantry!!)

😅
