Tesco fricking Club Card / two tier pricing

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 09:18

AIBU to hate Tesco Clubcard App and the two tier pricing in store. It rely annoys me on principle that Tesco actively sets out to overcharge customers in store if they haven't got the app handy or the card, in which case, massive palaver at the tills. They do this so they can scrape your personal data. It just puts me off shopping there TBH.

Moan over. I'm in Tesco's car park as a I write as I've flounced out in outrage!

It really doesn't bother me. I don't let it change my shopping behaviour, I just get what's on the (old school) shopping list. If some things are a bit less than they were last week because of the Clubcard, great.

I also don't get any junk mail and have both a Clubcard and a Nectar card.

Doris86 · 31/10/2023 09:55

I hate this too. All they do is overinflate the prices, and then give a clubcard ‘discount’ which makes it the same as the normal price you would pay in any other shop.

I avoid Tesco for this reason, and stick to the shops that just state the price without any of this fake discount BS.

Went to Lidl instead. Next door. So.
Much. Easier. Every day low pricing so not as hard to work out. Bag of gala apples 6p cheaper than in Tesco on Clubcard. Tesco wanted 95p from the faithful, almost twice that from everyone else. Lidl wanted 85p from everyone! I just think Tesco is stuck in the 90s taking customers for granted with its oversized stores and fake promotions.

Rant over! I know I am YABU. Tesco just gives me the supermarket ick!

You think Lidl don't have fake promotions?!

And I'd rather a proper checkout rather than the edge of a till to shove everything in a till and repack again 2 mins later or suffer the eye rolls from the cashier that I can't pack quickly enough

Their model doesn't suit the UK etiquette of packing. It does my head in.
Between Aldi and Lidl, Aldi is superior fyi

truetruebarneymcgrew · 31/10/2023 09:56

It also penalises anyone who is under 16, who is of no fixed abode/ temporary accommodation, who is visiting from another country. I can't stand it myself, but it's good because I've just stopped going to the supermarket, and shop locally, our market town has a butcher, baker candlestick maker and greengrocer. Pricing no different anymore to supermarket prices (without the card) and far better quality, so fresh produce actually lasts longer.

gemsgv · 31/10/2023 09:50

You don't need to open google wallet to pay on your phone. It just needs to be unlocked

this is true, but I often need to pay with a specific card that is not my default card.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 31/10/2023 09:58

I don't agree with 2 tier pricing.
Also annoys me I have to remember to take a club card etc out with me.
I don't want cards etc on my phone
Can't we just have triple points instead of these fake prices

Topofthemountain · 31/10/2023 09:59

I don't like the principle of it, but I'm not going to pay more for my shopping due to principles. Food is expensive enough as it is.

A pp mentioned co-op, they do the same, but call it a 'member's price' Milk is cheaper with the card for example. They then also do the offers on the app.

How is getting your card scanned - which takes a few seconds - a "massive palaver at the tills"?

Exactly.

Fahbeep · 31/10/2023 10:04

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy I like Aldi buts its other side of town. Lidl just happened to be the next nearest store on the day. I usually do Lidl, Aldi for everyday, M&S for premium stuff. No Waitrose in my town.

They're not discounts, it's been shown that the prices are just what they were before these cards were introduced and the other prices have just been inflated to make it appear like the card gives a discount

That's not the case in my area. I don't do my main shop Tesco, I use another supermarket with money off vouchers instead.

But I do occasional top up shops in Tesco, and at those times, pick up items I need which are discounted with Clubcard. They are definitely cheaper than the usual advertised price, Tesco & my usual supermarket. I find it very handy for items that have really risen in price, eg peanut butter (when on offer).

uncomfortablydumb53 · 31/10/2023 10:05

Not a problem for me.. and I use a plastic card!
I keep it with my debit card and scan both
I use sainsburys very often and Tesco for petrol
If I'm going anyway, I may as well collect the points through the year

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/10/2023 10:05

I don't understand why you are singling out Tesco to moan about. It's my main shopping place, just because it's the most convenient, but of the 4 shops I use regularly, all of them operate this type of scheme. I use Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Booths (large regional chain). They all do it. If I've got my bank card to pay with, I've got my other cards too, because I keep them in my wallet. Can't see the problem at all.

LubaLuca · 31/10/2023 10:05

A troupe of dancers and a marching band comes out every time someone scans a Clubcard in our big Tesco. Don't they do that in all stores?

^this...just goes to show they are profiteering, they obv make money on the lower pricing.

Like all supermarkets, making huge profits as they pushed up inflation, bit like the banks really, no wonder inflation is "sticky" its a get rich quick scheme for business.

WeighDownOnMe · 31/10/2023 10:09

Hate it all you want, Tesco is genius at mass data and has been for a few decades.

I suppose it depends if you're willing to trade the discount to let them know you regularly buy carrots and shampoo.

BeeDavis · 31/10/2023 10:09

mikado1 · 31/10/2023 09:21

She said if you don't have it handy, it causes a palaver! My local Tesco is very good, the staff just get another card and scan it so you still get the cheaper price.

whoever’s card it is they scan will be laughing 🤣🤣🤣

So ... personal choice.

I really don't like Lidl & Aldi. Some stuff is fine. Their meat is revolting. And they just don't have the range of products I need.

I don't buy much processed food - I think it's good for these.

I'm in Ireland so I go to Dunnes Stores. It's not the cheapest but its voucher scheme (get €10 off €50, €5 off €25) brings my shop down by €60 a week & makes a huge difference. It's still dependent on people shopping there each week (vouchers only last 10 days so you need to time your shops & purchases to get max value). It's the same as benefiting from lower offers with a Clubcard.

If neither appeals, then don't do it & stick with the likes of Lidl & Aldi but I don't see why you'd complain.

Digimoor · 31/10/2023 10:10

Sainsburys is the worst imho - nectar pricing and then additional discounts only if you use the phone app to self scan

mikado1 · 31/10/2023 10:11

BeeDavis · 31/10/2023 10:09

whoever’s card it is they scan will be laughing 🤣🤣🤣

They just ask a nearby shopper who is quite happy to get the points! I had the keyring thing but it fell off so now I've not got mine.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:11

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/10/2023 09:49

I agree. I think the price should be the price, to all shoppers equally. It's just another layer of bullshit we have to deal with.

It's not though.

It's an incentive for shoppers. Yes, it gives lots of data to businesses but it also offers the opportunity of some discount, depending on your shopping preference. .

Doris86 · 31/10/2023 10:11

I remember a similar thread a couple of years ago, with most people defending clubcard pricing and seeming to think the discounts were genuine.

The tide now seems to have turned, with the majority of posters here realising the discounts are fake, and that it is just underhanded trickery. Possibly largely because of the recent Which report which concluded this was the case.

So you have to wonder how long the clubcard price con continues, before popular opinion forces Tesco to abandon it.

Coffeerum · 31/10/2023 10:12

BananaSlug · 31/10/2023 09:50

That’s fine but I can still get the offers without needing a card unlike Tesco where you need the card or pay full price.

You can't though because they give additional money back via their app which is basically the same principle as Tesco. Don't have the card - pay more. It is the same for both.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/10/2023 10:12

Doris86 · 31/10/2023 09:55

Definitely not the case where I am in Dublin. The price is significantly cheaper. The issue can be that I'm tempted to buy things I don't actually need (obviously what the supermarket wants!)

Rincol · 31/10/2023 10:14

They can fuck off, Tesco. I hate the way it's marketed as being an opportunity for you to get stuff cheaper when really it's forcing customers to get the damn thing in order to pay a semi reasonable price.

They're all at it now though, Sainsbury's co op and Morrisons as well. Not content with gouging us for the past couple of years (like fuck did the Ukraine/Russia war quadruple the production costs of instant fucking coffee) they now require our data if we want to be slightly less ripped off in the future.

Fuck em. I get a regular fruit and veg box and I've got a decent local butcher and fishmonger. Everything else I can get from savers and the cash and carry. Supermarkets have made what was always going to be a shitty couple of years ten times shittier than it might have been.

Vitriolinsanity · 31/10/2023 10:14

My DS and his friends just lied about their ages to get the cards that give meal deal discounts.
