Extremely rude woman at till in Superdrug

My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this, being my typical dramatic self but I absolutely believe it was very rude. I was in Superdrug buying my usual cosmetic things, vaseline, cheap nail polish etc, and everything is fine. However, when I get the till the cashier asks me if I want any perfume, in the typical salesperson way and I say no thank you to which she says "are you sure my love" as if to imply that perfume is needed and that I smell (I was wearing some.) Overall I find the whole thing extremely rude and was considering saying something to the manager next time I am in there as it came off very snarky and inappropriate and I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.

YABU.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 07/10/2023 21:16

Do you have any idea at all how ridiculous you sound? Hmm

Sparklesocks · 07/10/2023 21:17

It’s hard to say without hearing her tone etc but often retail workers have quite a bit of pressure on them to upsell other products/open store cards (even if they really don’t want to push them!) so it’s likely it was linked to that rather than an implication that you ‘needed’ it and smelt.

XenoBitch · 07/10/2023 21:17

How amazing that you could read her mind, and know that was exactly what she was implying.

PunjabiGirl · 07/10/2023 21:17

Yabu
She's not implying you smell, she has to just sell things..its her job. I think you're being very oversensitive.

Finefinefine · 07/10/2023 21:18

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

VeridicalVagabond · 07/10/2023 21:18

As someone who worked in retail for years, YABU and people like you are the reason no one wants to work in retail anymore.

HTH.

DramaAlpaca · 07/10/2023 21:19

I'd just have said 'Quite sure, thank you' and thought no more of it.

It was a bit pushy I suppose, but extremely rude? No.

Berlinlover · 07/10/2023 21:19

She was just doing her job, YABU.

BashfulClam · 07/10/2023 21:19

Seriously? Next time you are in see if you can find a grip as you really need it!

ilovesooty · 07/10/2023 21:19

FFS. Do you usually look for offence in normal interactions?

NotSuchASmugMarried · 07/10/2023 21:21

It's the standard sales pitch, just say no thanks i'm quite sure I don't want any.

She's TOLD to push certain items at the till.

Wishimaywishimight · 07/10/2023 21:21

They always try to upsell in Superdrug. I doubt she cared enough about you to make it personal.

ArtAndMusic · 07/10/2023 21:21

🤣

Fuckitydoodah · 07/10/2023 21:22

I highly doubt that was what she was implying. I think there's a lot of pressure put on them to upsell.

Think no more about it and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

OtterlyMad · 07/10/2023 21:22

Speaking as someone who has worked in a shop and been forced to boost sales by continually asking customers if they want extra stuff at the till… YABU.

Don’t get someone in trouble for something so petty, it’s very unlikely that they want to be upselling, it probably makes them feel really awkward and embarrassed (it did me!) Just move on with our life, it really doesn’t warrant any thought or upset.

Toothyfruity · 07/10/2023 21:22

Maybe you smell?

jiinglebells · 07/10/2023 21:22

Customer experience?

It's Superdrug, not a spa. Say no thanks again and get over it surely?

ilovesooty · 07/10/2023 21:23

If she'd been upselling deodorant and said "You pong a bit. Would you like some of this?" you might have had a point.

Your reaction is ridiculous.

MayThe4th · 07/10/2023 21:23

Well, you could go and complain to her manager, I expect they need a good laugh from time to time.

Why do you think she was implying you smell? I really don't think she was!

tenbob · 07/10/2023 21:23

Op, never ever go to a staffed till in WH Smith

You’ll explode into a fireball when they try and flog you some chocolate

EarringsandLipstick · 07/10/2023 21:24

Of course she did 🙄

DeniseSecunda · 07/10/2023 21:24

Obviously no one can say if she thinks you smell bad, but what I CAN say is that salespeople who ask me MORE THAN ONCE if I want something, and specifically if they ask me if "I'm sure," really annoy the hell out of me. Like, YES, I'm sure; you asked once, that's enough for an answer.

That being said, it's really an extreme reaction to complain to a manager. They'll just think YOU're the crazy/rude one.
