Extremely rude woman at till in Superdrug

My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this, being my typical dramatic self but I absolutely believe it was very rude. I was in Superdrug buying my usual cosmetic things, vaseline, cheap nail polish etc, and everything is fine. However, when I get the till the cashier asks me if I want any perfume, in the typical salesperson way and I say no thank you to which she says "are you sure my love" as if to imply that perfume is needed and that I smell (I was wearing some.) Overall I find the whole thing extremely rude and was considering saying something to the manager next time I am in there as it came off very snarky and inappropriate and I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.

You don’t by any chance go to a Superdrug in Shropshire, OP? There’s a Superdrug salesperson who says this exact thing when you say no to their offer of perfume!

Do they say it rudely though?

ThreeRingCircus · 07/10/2023 22:01

I agree with your husband.... you're a drama llama.

Oh my gosh! I think you’re not being unreasonable at all. It drives me potty when staff have to try and upswell perfume but obviously don’t give a flying $$$. I’ve had the, ‘ ahh, but your eyebrows are so ugglleeee’ off suoerdrug. Never mind I got them done there a week ago.
it makes the whole experience ugly imo and really doesn’t put me in the mood to spend 50 odd quid on a spontaneous treat. There must be a better way to sell perfume .

also, worth noting that if your child is involved in the trans fashion, super drug will sell them actual testosterone ( also called steroids ) online, no questions asked, for 18 quid a week, delivered to your house. So IF your counselor/teacher/doctor says, ‘ don’t worry, massive waiting lists, lots of counseling before anything is prescribed’ .. they are wrong. And they won’t believe you that this is happening. Only saying because this has happened to my very vulnerable daughter. It could very easily happen to yours, no matter how much you think it won’t.

Just in case anyone believes this absolute hysterical crock of shit, Superdrug online doctor sells Testogel to peri and post menopausal women for £18, they are not selling steroids to children.

trainboundfornowhere · 07/10/2023 22:03

It is a simple case of the sales assistant being told to upsell so she is just doing her job.

HerMammy · 07/10/2023 22:04

I think your husband was being polite and didn't want to tell you that you're an arsehole.

When I go to WHSmith they always try to push me into buying a chocolate orange which I've always thought was just a part of her job but now I suspect it's her inferring I look vitamin deficient and in need of some vitamin C. Sad

D'you when I'm in WHSmith they never ever try to sell me stamps .
Do they think I have no friends so don't need to post things ?
Bastards !

Mummysaf · 07/10/2023 22:04

Hahahaha
that Vaseline must be for where you obviously shove your head up your own arse.

thankyou for the laugh though 😂😂😂

RedRobyn2021 · 07/10/2023 22:04

This made me laugh, thank you

Honeybee798 · 07/10/2023 22:05

Someoneonlyyouknow · 07/10/2023 21:59

Do they say it rudely though?

No, I don’t think so but it could be taken that way I suppose? I think tone is very important.

I was also making the point that someone who works in my local Superdrug says it too, so maybe it’s something that they’re told to say.

Superhair · 07/10/2023 22:06

I would complain to the manager. It sounds like she doesn’t want to promote the perfume and is taking the piss, hopefully the manager will give her a reprieve and stop her asking.

Butterkist8 · 07/10/2023 22:07

Tone aside, they get paid according to sales performance, by the sounds of it.

Just let it go.

I like Superdrug but I hate the performance at the till.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 07/10/2023 22:11

Just wave your credit card under her nose and say ...... 'ready?'

WiddlinDiddlin · 07/10/2023 22:14

Oh bloody hell...

She'll have been TOLD to push whatever product as much as possible. She probably gets a bollocking if shes caught NOT pushing it.

When you HAVE to ask people something every time, (I have to ask people to review our product) you tend to come out with the same phrase every time, particularly the awkward bit when they say no and you have to try again, and you switch your mind off a bit and just do it on autopilot.

I doubt she could describe you 10 seconds after, never mind notice whether you stink or not.

SmileyClare · 07/10/2023 22:15

She’s probably said the words Would you like some perfume? Are you sure? about 500 times already that morning and the words have lost all meaning.

Seriously get over yourself.

If people around you are telling you you’re “dramatic” then take note-it’s not a compliment!

Remember you’re just another customer and not anyone special.

Daphnis156 · 07/10/2023 22:16

Are you really sure you don't require perfume?
Everyone else seems to think you do.

Or maybe an award for the most petty complaint ever!

SmileyClare · 07/10/2023 22:17

Mummysaf · 07/10/2023 22:04

Hahahaha

Harsh but 😂🤣

Cas112 · 07/10/2023 22:17

It's literally her job. Your reaching here OP

funinthesun19 · 07/10/2023 22:19

She gets told to ask you as part of her job. In reality though, I don’t really think she cares one bit if you want some perfume and probably hates having to ask you.

Agapornis · 07/10/2023 22:19

Have you never been to Superdrug before?

Upselling is obligatory for staff and comes with difficult, high targets. They either do the hard sell or it leads to a disciplinary and they lose their job. Say 'no thank you' and move on.

Nagado · 07/10/2023 22:21

2764mice · 07/10/2023 21:41

OP, pleeease describe the tone of voice she used that insinuated that you smell? I have been trying all different tones in my head and I can't find one that will do it. Put me out of my misery. Did she say it while scrunching up her face, pinching her nose while recoiling in disgust?

I think it would have been said with a head tilt. A really spiteful head tilt.

Hawkins0009 · 07/10/2023 22:22

DawnieOwl · 07/10/2023 21:25

I did not expect this to have such a big/negative reaction and for that I apologise, but all I can say is, you did not hear her tone.

even with the tone its still depends on interpretation, as one persons omg, can be anothers they just offered x etc

CeeChynaa · 07/10/2023 22:23

😂😂😂

shiso · 07/10/2023 22:23

I agree with your Husband.

Chickpea17 · 07/10/2023 22:24

Your joking right??

ThePoshUns · 07/10/2023 22:26

Did she recommend Vagisil as well?
