Extremely rude woman at till in Superdrug

My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this, being my typical dramatic self but I absolutely believe it was very rude. I was in Superdrug buying my usual cosmetic things, vaseline, cheap nail polish etc, and everything is fine. However, when I get the till the cashier asks me if I want any perfume, in the typical salesperson way and I say no thank you to which she says "are you sure my love" as if to imply that perfume is needed and that I smell (I was wearing some.) Overall I find the whole thing extremely rude and was considering saying something to the manager next time I am in there as it came off very snarky and inappropriate and I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.

Perfume does seem a bit pricy as a till teller (I think that's what we called them when I worked in retail) last time I went in Superdrug it was make-up wipes being pushed so we grabbed a couple-felt good knowing I was helping out the assistant plus you can never have too many, so win-win. I wouldn't be persuaded into buying perfume randomly tho!

sadsack78 · 08/10/2023 00:04

As someone who has worked a till and had to push perfume onto people, I can honestly say all that was going through her head was her next performance review at work, her payslip, and when she was next able to take a break.

she probably said 'Are you sure?' in that way to 100 other people who came to the till that day.

I once overheard an older man ask to speak to a manager because a Boots pharmacist had asked him to take a seat. He was upset at the implication that he was elderly. I’m afraid, like him, you seem to have taken a harmless comment to heart.

P.S. I told him he was overreacting. I myself was not having a good day having gone into Boots to print pictures to put with my dad in his coffin.

jammyhand · 08/10/2023 00:08

Oof can smell you from here. The stench of entitlement

tttigress · 08/10/2023 00:09

I think you may be being a bit OTT.

But it is annoying that cashier's are forced to try to flog extra stuff at the till. They probably hate it just as much as the customer.

Louise303 · 08/10/2023 00:19

Sounds like she was told to tell customers about perfume deals she does not sound rude to me.

Grumpusaurus · 08/10/2023 00:22

Oh, just chill Stinkers!

Unnecessary, whatever your opinion of the OP.

The Karen thing needs to die a death. It's horrible, ageist and sexist.

ThinWomansBrain · 08/10/2023 00:56

YABVU - superdrug are the worst for pushing the sells staff to plug perfumes/loyalty card/any other crap on special offer.
Usually leading to ginormous queues.
I was amazed, I went into superdrug this afternoon AND THERE WAS NO QUEUE. I think that's a first.

Do you have any idea at all how ridiculous you sound? Hmm

This

Icepinkeskimo · 08/10/2023 01:02

OP
your attitude stinks and no amount of perfume will make you sweeter.
if you go to the manager to complain about the “perfume pusher” at the till. I will seriously consider complain to the same manager and ask him to ban you.
There’s plenty of problems out there you don’t need to make any more.

Op, never ever go to a staffed till in WH Smith

You’ll explode into a fireball when they try and flog you some chocolate

Actually, maybe the WH Smith staff think I'm far too slim, and could do with some chocolate to fill me out a wee bit? 🤔

(Doubtful)

ToWhitToWhoo · 08/10/2023 01:07

I strongly suspect that she was under pressure from management to promote and push the perfume to customers in general. I can understand finding it a bit irritating; but I'm sure it's NOTHING personal and doesn't mean that she thinks that you smell bad!

MariePaperRoses · 08/10/2023 01:09

How spiteful that you would want to consider reporting a low paid til worker who has been told to flog perfumes at the point of sale.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 08/10/2023 01:12

YABU
It would've been rude if she said" you need to buy this!"

beatrix1234 · 08/10/2023 01:16

@DawnieOwl My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this,

I’m joining your husband here. You sound hormonal OP.

I agree - and here's a little tip: you will find life much easier if you stop looking for hidden meanings in every comment.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 08/10/2023 01:18

OMG the exact same thing happened to me when I went in, except it was toothpaste! And she said "are you sure, it's two for one?" Like I'm some mingy non-tooth-cleaning bint.

YAB ridiculous.

Nanaof1 · 08/10/2023 02:31

I think she was just trying to upsell and meant nothing by it. They get pushed to upsell, which makes them have to push on you. At least it wasn't feminine hygiene products or condoms.

Don't look for offence where there is none.

Nat6999 · 08/10/2023 02:51

One of the advantages of shopping online only, none of the pushy sales assistants. It's the best way of shopping in Superdrug, Lush or WH Smiths.

chillin12 · 08/10/2023 03:27

Sorry, this is just hilarious 😂 I can understand feeling paranoid in your position. But if you know you don’t smell, and your husband can confirm that, it just seems like she was trying to sell.

SD1978 · 08/10/2023 03:46

I'd start maybe doing online shopping. It sounds like an utter non event, but clearly wasn't to you. Was your husband there? He said it was a non event- did he hear the interaction?
