Extremely rude woman at till in Superdrug

My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this, being my typical dramatic self but I absolutely believe it was very rude. I was in Superdrug buying my usual cosmetic things, vaseline, cheap nail polish etc, and everything is fine. However, when I get the till the cashier asks me if I want any perfume, in the typical salesperson way and I say no thank you to which she says "are you sure my love" as if to imply that perfume is needed and that I smell (I was wearing some.) Overall I find the whole thing extremely rude and was considering saying something to the manager next time I am in there as it came off very snarky and inappropriate and I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.

Joke right? Some weird reverse thing?

itsgettingweird · 08/10/2023 03:53

I wouldn't say she was extremely rude.

It wouldn't have anything to do with your smell and everything to do with the fact they have to do it!

Oh my god. Move on with your life

HettyWainty · 08/10/2023 05:30

And people wonder why so many people suffer from anxiety.

Hibiscrubbed · 08/10/2023 09:53

Oh OP. Come on. 😂

SongofBernadette · 08/10/2023 10:12

Christ, some of you want to tar and feather the OP. I would have no idea what tone she said it in OP, she was probably on autopilot though.
Reminds me of a few years ago in the spar, massive pile of whole pineapples on the counter the woman repeated a similar spiel but I just burst out laughing at the "Are you sure?" Who fucking isn't sure if they want a massive pineapple?

I have this same exchange each time I'm at the till in either Superdrug or Savers. Chill out, you're overreacting. They're just doing their job and trying to sell their perfume stock.

Op, never ever go to a staffed till in WH Smith

You’ll explode into a fireball when they try and flog you some chocolate

Or some mints 😂

I was in a Superdrug earlier today. As is standard they tried to push the products on the counter. I made clear I wasn’t interested but she tried again which actually surprised me and very mildly irritated me. I wonder if they’re now expressly training the staff not to take the first no.

Sounds like it. It's also a bit of a daft tactic.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/10/2023 18:18

Good god!

Bluebellsbells · 08/10/2023 18:24

They give the hard sell because they have to and I bet they have quotas they have to meet. It's an awful way to sell a product, I bet the cashier is equally uncomfortable. I would complain to Superdrug but because of the ridiculous policy rather than the member of staff.

@DawnieOwl I can imagine it's frustrating that this forum hasn't given you the response you were looking for. I think it would be helpful to look into cognitive behavioural therapy, e.g. what's the evidence you have for and against your beliefs that she was being very rude? Your feelings and the way you perceived her tone of voice are valid but this doesn't necessarily reflect reality. People here have given you lots of ideas of what may be going on (she was doing a hard sell).
