Extremely rude woman at till in Superdrug

My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this, being my typical dramatic self but I absolutely believe it was very rude. I was in Superdrug buying my usual cosmetic things, vaseline, cheap nail polish etc, and everything is fine. However, when I get the till the cashier asks me if I want any perfume, in the typical salesperson way and I say no thank you to which she says "are you sure my love" as if to imply that perfume is needed and that I smell (I was wearing some.) Overall I find the whole thing extremely rude and was considering saying something to the manager next time I am in there as it came off very snarky and inappropriate and I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.

OP posts:

She was rude and would annoy me to no end. Pushing once is bad enough for me but asking Are you sure and adding my love is a lot worse. If I wanted the parfume I would have bought it, dont you think?
I always wonder who are the people who actually decide in the split second that yes they acually want the thing.

Rainbowshit · 07/10/2023 22:27

What have I just read?!??

honeyfox · 07/10/2023 22:27

It's a thing in Superdrug, I was asked the last time I was in as well.

As someone who worked in retail for years, YABU and people like you are the reason no one wants to work in retail anymore.

HTH.

Perhaps it the managers /or whoever/ is pushing the cashiers to be rude to customers, rather than the custumers not liking when someone is rude to them.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 07/10/2023 22:30

She has to say that, it is part of the role. She said it to 50 customers before you and will say it to anyone else she served that day.

DysonSpheres · 07/10/2023 22:31

Aaaaahhahahaha🤣🤣🤣🤣
<wheez>

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 07/10/2023 22:32

Well I doubt op will be back!

Grendalsmum · 07/10/2023 22:32

Please complain. The manager will be dying to hear your valuable feedback on your substandard customer experience, everyone could do with a laugh in these trying times and you may even make it onto the pillock of the week board they keep in the stockroom.

ThePoshUns · 07/10/2023 22:26

Did she recommend Vagisil as well?

I'm crying 😭😭🤣🤣🤣

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 07/10/2023 22:37

"Are you sure?" is just a thing people sometimes say ie -
"Do you want a cup of tea?"
"No thanks"
"You sure?"
"No, I'm fine, thanks"
"Ok".

You are being very unreasonable. You also sound very unpleasant in all honestly.

dayswithaY · 07/10/2023 22:37

If I hadn’t worked in retail I would say I don’t believe this is real. Unfortunately, I know only too well that people like you do exist, there’s loads of you out there.

This is why I left retail.

Crayfishforyou · 07/10/2023 22:37

Urgh. I hates doing this stuff when I worked in retail. Unless you did it, you got shouted at by the manager. But when you did it, 9 times out of 10 you’d piss off the customer. You could never win.
She was probably down on her target, which means no pitiful ‘bonus’ to her wage, and a bollocking from management into the bargain.

SamW98 · 07/10/2023 22:40

YABVVVVVU and absolutely ridiculous.

Retail staff have to try and up sell and many will have sales targets.

I really hope this is a troll thread otherwise it’s one of the most overdramatic things I’ve read on here - against some pretty stiff competition

Justleaveitblankthen · 07/10/2023 22:40

They used to do this in Sports Direct.

Even if you spent a couple of hundred quid on Golf equipment for example, they would try to sell you a pack of sports socks.
When you politely refused they wouldn't take no for an answer 😂
You just don't budge.
It takes practice to shut them down politely.

It used to irritate me though.
Not enough that you were paying for lots of stuff in there:"Just buy the fucking socks!" it felt like..

I don't think they do it now 🤔

Chasingup · 07/10/2023 22:42

I lost my job at Superdrug when I was 17 for not selling enough “star buys” yabu

JennyJenny8675309 · 07/10/2023 22:45

This is bonkers.

Guesswho88 · 07/10/2023 22:46

😂😂😂

Escapetofrance · 07/10/2023 22:47

Do you think you might smell? If that’s a concern on your mind, then it’s probably why you think she may have meant that.
However-I highly doubt that she could smell you from across the counter and was trying to boost profits.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 07/10/2023 22:48

They are actually told to do this by managers and am guessing they hate it as much as you do so you are being unreasonable and I understand and know it is annoying if someone keeps asking same thing. Remember I went to hairdresser years ago and the person doing my hair kept asking me am I alright. Made me paranoid and wanted to scream at them are you all bloodywell right...

Stravaig · 07/10/2023 22:49

Pick your own:

I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.
Perhaps she was respecting every other custoner's experience? Protecting the public at large. Ha! Didn't think of that, did you?

How many people do you think she serves each day, every day? You are just another in an endless sea of faces, utterly insignificant - hence the rote questions/responses. Why would she even bother engaging her smell receptors for you?

I sympathise. The way she reeled back, and gagged, grabbing the counter for support; then completed your purchase one-handed, while clutching a cloth over her mouth and nose ... it was perhaps a wee bit tactless. Or did that not happen?

You are being spectacularly unreasonable, OP.

NowYouSee · 07/10/2023 22:50

I was in a Superdrug earlier today. As is standard they tried to push the products on the counter. I made clear I wasn’t interested but she tried again which actually surprised me and very mildly irritated me. I wonder if they’re now expressly training the staff not to take the first no.

Starlightstarbright2 · 07/10/2023 22:51

I can imagine how many rude people she had per day and she won’t be counting them on one hand

Zeppel · 07/10/2023 22:52

I agree with your DH. Total overreaction.

AmyDudley · 07/10/2023 22:55

Yeah the cashier in Superdrug tried the same thing on me the other day, obviously I totally dismissed the idea that part of her job is to upsell perfume to customers, and instead assumed I must smell like a skunk's bum.
I haven't been out of the house since.

Rubyupbeat · 07/10/2023 22:55

Hysterical, how did you work that out?
