Extremely rude woman at till in Superdrug

My husband thinks that I was overreacting about this, being my typical dramatic self but I absolutely believe it was very rude. I was in Superdrug buying my usual cosmetic things, vaseline, cheap nail polish etc, and everything is fine. However, when I get the till the cashier asks me if I want any perfume, in the typical salesperson way and I say no thank you to which she says "are you sure my love" as if to imply that perfume is needed and that I smell (I was wearing some.) Overall I find the whole thing extremely rude and was considering saying something to the manager next time I am in there as it came off very snarky and inappropriate and I do not think she was respecting the customer experience.

If more Manet keeps going like this it will all be self serve tills before long..... oh, wait..!

BasicDad · 07/10/2023 21:34

That's right, go inform the manager, who is even more on the hook for sales and revenue 😅😅😅

Don't worry they'll soon think the machine is being rude and demand to see its manager.

Cosyblankets · 07/10/2023 21:35

Buying vaseline and cheap nail polish really isn't a customer experience!
She was doing her job
I came on to see how she'd been rude as it's usually when customers don't get something their way like a refund people come on here saying they were rude but this takes the biscuit!

largeprintagathachristie · 07/10/2023 21:36

They HAVE to try to upsell at the till.
You sound very over dramatic

StarDolphins · 07/10/2023 21:36

Do you think you small?

katseyes7 · 07/10/2023 21:36

I work in retail, but fortunately not in a situation where this is expected.
However, some people react to being asked if they have a loyalty card like they're being asked if they've ever been in a porn film.
We do what we're told to do. That's what we're paid for. And as a PP mentioned, if you don't fill the brief and it's a mystery shopper, you get into trouble.

Whatsgoingon12345 · 07/10/2023 21:37

Goodness me, you’re all being quite harsh with op. My experience with super drug is pretty tawdry tbh. Wouldn’t put it past any of the assistants in our local branch to say something like this. The upside is, you got served. I’ve had to wander about the shop and wait while the assistant finished chatting before she deigned to come to the till.

Truthbomb · 07/10/2023 21:38

Such an odd use of your mental energy. How an earth can this be causing you so much frustration? I really think you need to let this go, it’s just not healthy to get so worked up about non issues. Utterly bizarre thread.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 07/10/2023 21:38

You dingbat.

Lentilweaver · 07/10/2023 21:38

You think Superdrug assistants have the time to make knowing comments about your personal hygiene? or anyone in retail for that matter?

Nagado · 07/10/2023 21:41

I do not think she was respecting the customer experience

😂 You’re buying Vaseline in a cheapy shop. Exactly what ‘customer experience’ were you expecting?

And maybe it’s part of her cunning sales technique. For every customer she annoys, she makes two customers sufficiently paranoid that they smell that they buy whatever perfume is currently being flogged by a fading pop star.

QuillBill · 07/10/2023 21:41

When I go to WHSmith they always try to push me into buying a chocolate orange which I've always thought was just a part of her job but now I suspect it's her inferring I look vitamin deficient and in need of some vitamin C. Sad

2764mice · 07/10/2023 21:41

OP, pleeease describe the tone of voice she used that insinuated that you smell? I have been trying all different tones in my head and I can't find one that will do it. Put me out of my misery. Did she say it while scrunching up her face, pinching her nose while recoiling in disgust?

ilovesooty · 07/10/2023 21:43

Describing buying a few pedestrian items from Superdrug as a "customer experience" sounds very strange.

Whalewatchers · 07/10/2023 21:46

tenbob · 07/10/2023 21:23

Op, never ever go to a staffed till in WH Smith

You’ll explode into a fireball when they try and flog you some chocolate

She might think that they are implying she is malnourished.

Obviously no one can say if she thinks you smell bad, but what I CAN say is that salespeople who ask me MORE THAN ONCE if I want something, and specifically if they ask me if "I'm sure," really annoy the hell out of me. Like, YES, I'm sure; you asked once, that's enough for an answer.

That being said, it's really an extreme reaction to complain to a manager. They'll just think YOU're the crazy/rude one.

Agree. I hate the hard sell in Superdrug and Savers. But I can afford their products so I will continue to go .I don't think I've ever had them ask more than once though .

If someone were to ask the same question again when I had said no I would be annoyed . I would try not to be rude, probably just say no thanks or not bother responding again but yeah it would irritate me.

I get that the staff have to ask because it's their job but they still get paid, it's not as though their pay depends on commissions, so there's no need to ask more than once.

Someoneonlyyouknow · 07/10/2023 21:47

I would definitely complain about a till operator suggesting I mask body odour with perfume rather than soap and antiperspirant.

She didn't as far as we know. It's just the OP's strange perception.

Lovehearts82 · 07/10/2023 21:48

Oh my christ 🤦‍♀️

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 07/10/2023 21:48

Well, one thing is true.

There was an extremely rude woman at the till in Superdrug.

It just wasn't the sales assistant.

KrisAkabusi · 07/10/2023 21:53

Your husband says you are usually overdramatic. I think you need to listen to him!

Chonkadoodle · 07/10/2023 21:55

Did you need the Vaseline to remove the stick from up your arse OP?

Honeybee798 · 07/10/2023 21:58

You don’t by any chance go to a Superdrug in Shropshire, OP? There’s a Superdrug salesperson who says this exact thing when you say no to their offer of perfume!

OP wasn't rude, really. She didn't actually complain. I'm sure the sales assistant didn't give it a second thought.
