To think that no matter where you go on holiday there's always annoying loud twats

We're staying in a very expensive 5 star resort in Europe. Beautiful, gorgeous views, top notch food and drink. Sat here sipping iced tea and enjoying my book.

Then the family from hell parks themselves next to me. On the beers already, quite possibly already drunk. (it's early). Proceed to have very loud conversation peppered with lots of 'fucks' which everyone around the pool can hear. Do these people have no self awareness? I mean, I know I could move but I'm comfy now and why should I?

First world problem, I know. Maybe villa holidays are the way forward.

Yep, always at least one FFH as we call them. Always identify one when waiting at the airport gate too and 9 times out of ten we are sitting behind or infront of them. It's our airport entertainment.

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 09:42

Oh yes I love a bit of holiday bitching about our fellow guests. Keeps us amused.

Yep, villa/gite in the middle of nowhere avoids this problem.

No I've never experienced this on holiday, I've only heard about it on MN. But we tend not to go to tourist traps and have never done a package holiday or similar.

Loud people annoy me. There is no need to talk loud enough that everyone can hear your conversation word for word in a large space (barring medical issues). If I can’t block you out with my in-ear earphones without hurting my own hearing trying to drown you out, you are too loud.

FrenchandSaunders · 21/09/2023 09:48

We had this last week, and we were debating a villa next year. However, I would miss the people watching.

cardibach · 21/09/2023 09:50

Resorts are your issue. Try smaller hotels. Stayed in a beautiful boutique one last week. I don’t do a lot of lying by the pool anyway, but it would always have been quiet at this place. Why live closer to loads of people than you do at home? And why expect it to be quieter than home if you do?

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 09:53

I think there may be a gap in the market for a chain of exclusive hotels where you have to pass an interview prior to booking to prove you're not a twat. May pitch it to Dragons Den, just need a spare 100 million or so to get started.

Never had this problem, but then we don't go to "5-star resorts". A lovely gite somewhere in the Auvergne or the Haute Provence is more our thing. You have to be a bit careful picking ski resorts though, it's best to go somewhere that isn't really a "beginner" station to avoid the idiots.

No, who decides who’s a twat though?

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 09:56

@Ohambassador well me, obviously. It's my company.

Does everyone on MN really go to non tourist resorts containing remote gites on holiday? Really?

No. Like I said, I went to a small boutique hotel in an area with plenty of other tourists. It’s not massive resort hotel or villa. There are options in between.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/09/2023 10:11

I have always loved loved Ioved AI holidays and get pissed off with all the snobbery on MN towards them. This year is the first since DD was a baby that we've not done it.

Without fail though there is always that one loud and sweary person starting on the booze the minute the pool bar opens at 10am. Maybe occasionally this is fun but every day for 14 seems excessive.

I'd actually rather pay a little more for better quality alcohol (especially the wine which often isn't great on AI) or have it served later say 11.30am. I think this could help with the issue.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/09/2023 10:12

We stayed in a 5star hotel in August and not one ffh.Weve been before and although it's A.I it doesn't attract twats

Not everyone, but certainly a lot of people do. I've never been to anything that could be classed as a resort except for skiing and even then we always just rent a flat. We've always just got on the ferry and driven somewhere and either rented a place or camped, same as our parents did in the 70s. There's no way we could justify the expense of all-inclusive hotel-based holidays to ourselves and the horror stories I read about them on here aren't exactly making me reconsider.

Disturbia81 · 21/09/2023 10:14

Can't stand people who think everyone else wants to hear their voice, such self importance mixed with lack of social skills

peppermintcrisp · 21/09/2023 10:16

Yes, even wild camping. There will always be someone or a group who stays up 'til 1 -3pm making a racket!

Last time we went, a solo camper, next to us had headphones on and was singing along while looking around manically - it put me right on edge haha

When you do, please can I come, @SleeplessinSeattle53? I am quiet and well behaved, and guarantee to spend most of my time reading, knitting or messing around on the iPad with the sound firmly OFF.

LOL at the notion that the only loud, annoying twats are people who go 'tourist traps' and have 'package holidays', and also LOL at the fact that Mumsnet thinks the only loud, annoying people are the ones who swear a lot and drink beer and are a bit common.

A lot of my holidays are in places like the Scottish highlands and islands, so definitely not package holidays. Let me tell you that the number of times we've found ourselves having breakfast in a hotel next to a braying middle-class family with four whiny children in fleeces, with the parents doing full-on performance parenting at the tops of their voices and making a massive fuss and drama out of literally everything from ordering some toast to deciding who will sit next to who at the table, has driven me slowly insane over the years.
