To think that no matter where you go on holiday there's always annoying loud twats

We're staying in a very expensive 5 star resort in Europe. Beautiful, gorgeous views, top notch food and drink. Sat here sipping iced tea and enjoying my book.

Then the family from hell parks themselves next to me. On the beers already, quite possibly already drunk. (it's early). Proceed to have very loud conversation peppered with lots of 'fucks' which everyone around the pool can hear. Do these people have no self awareness? I mean, I know I could move but I'm comfy now and why should I?

First world problem, I know. Maybe villa holidays are the way forward.

I am clearly being very dim, but what is a FFH, please?

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 10:19

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius it sounds like you would pass the interview with flying colours.

We do adults only all inclusive smaller ship cruises (not those horrendous enormous floating apartment block resort ships). No ffh there.

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 10:22

@ManateeFair oh yeah I totally agree that there are other forms of annoying and loud behaviour, not just the drunken common types.

I love one unreasonably family on holiday, preferably overweight, smoking around children, drinking too much and arguing.

It is like watching an episode of Shameless and very cathartic

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 10:25

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz get thee to Ikos - full wine list and branded drinks. Sadly not twat free though.

@Ohambassador I was a late MN adopter and didn't use it when my kids were at school.

For those who claim to have never encountered loud obnoxious guests...

...could it be you? 😱

I'm joking. Obviously.

But villas are the way forward if you can.
Every year we say we should try a hotel for the kids - the entertainment & whatnot. Then I see my friends photos & all those semi naked strangers with the potential to be loud & overbearing in my holiday space...

I get others specifically go to hotels for the socials & they would find a villa boring, but it's just not for me.

We did an all inclusive this year for the first time and never again. Back to the villas for us.

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 10:31

I like the idea of villas but there's no one to wait on you and cook your food.

We had this last week, and we were debating a villa next year. However, I would miss the people watching.

Agree. We looked at villas this year but we don't want to drive and they are often (not always) pretty remote.

When we priced them it was going to cost more for a very basic villa with outdated decoration BEFORE factoring food and drink than 10 days half board in Sorrento. Even after taking into account a light lunch and drinks Italy in a hotel was significantly cheaper than a villa

Why preferably overweight?

Resorts are your issue. Try smaller hotels. Stayed in a beautiful boutique one last week. I don’t do a lot of lying by the pool anyway, but it would always have been quiet at this place. Why live closer to loads of people than you do at home? And why expect it to be quieter than home if you do?

Good point

Does everyone on MN really go to non tourist resorts containing remote gites on holiday? Really?

Fightyouforthatpie · 21/09/2023 10:35

I went to a remote island in the Maldives with ex. Idyllic, until the German bloke in the next hut slaps U2 on the CD player at full blast. Arrrrgghhh.

BlowDryRat · 21/09/2023 10:37

Villa holidays aren't risk-free unless you don't go out. We stayed at a gorgeous, quiet agrotourism place this summer but went out every day. All good until the catamaran cruise (which, TBF, I expected to be full of FFH). One man, pink as a lobster, was constantly drinking, shouting inanities at his wife and kids and being a PITA. Another man was smoking on the crowded deck🙄The other 100-odd people were lovely though.

DH and I went to a very expensive adults-only AI in Mexico a few years ago. Again, mostly fine but a few loud and obnoxious types bragging about how expensive their suite was, being twats to the waiters at the pool etc. An American woman on the sun lounger next to DH rolled her eyes at her own DH and said, "No matter how much you spend, can never pay enough to keep the white trash out". Ouch.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 21/09/2023 10:31

Why preferably overweight?

Probably for the same reason a snobby relative of mine came back from her latest cruise (nothing wrong with cruises, to be clear) complaining that this time it had been "full of fat Americans". (She's overweight herself, albeit not extremely so.)

We exchanged looks but we knew it wasn't worth it.

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 10:40

@BlowDryRat American lady needs to come to my new twat free resort. It's happening.

I don’t mind people drinking early but our last holiday has the people next to us come back from reception and one bellowed to the other “Yeah I asked about the coach and we’ve got the time wrong haha I felt like a right stupid cunt”. My 10yo and 6yo then asked me what a cunt is 🙄 vile inconsiderate pricks.

I don’t think you can guarantee avoiding awful people wherever there are people. Yes, I have encountered awful behaviour at AI places, big tourist attractions, city centre hotels and the rest. I have also been subjected to a bloke loudly and continuously belching as we sat on our respective terraces at a national park in Nepal and come close to murdering an obnoxiously loud dickhead on a sunrise walk in Tikal, ensuring there was no chance of seeing any animals.

You would assume places like that attract people who want to soak up the atmosphere, but unfortunately the boorish minority get everywhere.
