To think that no matter where you go on holiday there's always annoying loud twats

We're staying in a very expensive 5 star resort in Europe. Beautiful, gorgeous views, top notch food and drink. Sat here sipping iced tea and enjoying my book.

Then the family from hell parks themselves next to me. On the beers already, quite possibly already drunk. (it's early). Proceed to have very loud conversation peppered with lots of 'fucks' which everyone around the pool can hear. Do these people have no self awareness? I mean, I know I could move but I'm comfy now and why should I?

First world problem, I know. Maybe villa holidays are the way forward.

Can you send me a brochure please OP?

Genius business plan

I don’t associate bad behaviour with British people specifically, although I’ve encountered enough awful British tourists.

The two examples of crap behaviour on my last holiday were a Turkish man banging his tray table repeatedly and vigorously jabbing the inflight entertainment system causing vibrations through my seat for my entire flight and a group of drunken Russians having a late night party next to my room. Prior to that, I’ve dealt with aggressive cat-kicking Danes and the world’s most drainingly negative woman (Swedish) on a group tour, a horrendously noisy French family who kept us up all night with their whooping and japes, a German couple thumping around their room and talking until the wee hours (both of these two last in the kind of small, low-key hotels with few British visitors that keep being cited on here) and Middle Eastern families letting their kids run about in a London hotel.

The obnoxious and the oblivious are from everywhere and they get everywhere.

My Irish friend's granny apparently always said 'Don't pack a gobshite'

Meaning...no need, there is sure to be one there already!

Thing is, OP, for your resort you need the quiet abd harnless book readers (moi) but you need to get a good mix of other types too, without veering into ‘obnoxious wanker’ territory, or there’ll be no good people watching. Challenging

This is true. I love a people watch - but down at the beach and well away from the hotel.

There's a fine line between amusing and alarming. And having to move the kids.

Does everyone on MN really go to non tourist resorts containing remote gites on holiday? Really?

Nope. I went on a school holidays cruise where many of the adults had bought the all inclusive drinks package and spent the first 3 days of the cruise attempting to get their money's worth, to the detriment of parenting their own children. Thankfully it calmed down a few days in as the hangovers and childcare issues combined, but it's not something I'm keen to repeat.

YANBU OP. I'm all for people having a nice holiday, but with consideration for others who are also trying to do the same.

@Strugglingtodomybest erm I'm not sure that's going to work as a business model...

In that case, you're being totally unreasonable and I'm out!

TheaBrandt · 21/09/2023 13:25

Twattish loud behaviour is not limited by class age or race so will be tricky to weed out in advance!

Our experiences:

  1. Group of hideous loud posh late teens early twenties totally ruined an afternoon at a posh hotel in Kenya we stayed in on our honeymoon. All the other guests and us quietly vacated the pool area to avoid their unspeakable braying
  2. Rough loud family in beauty spot in Devon. Again around 8 normal families quietly left after their twattish ness became apparent
  3. Dutch family loudly performance parenting - French and British families were normal quietly left

Oh and an elderly French couple watching loud French tv on an iPad in a restaurant. Wtaf!!! Dh said something to the staff.

Usernamen · 21/09/2023 13:31

I don’t know why people are surprised that there could annoying loud families at a 5 star resort.

Lots of people from all walks of life have access to money.

In fact, the established middle classes who pride themselves on their ‘manners’ are getting poorer and poorer in real terms, and people who pride themselves on being ‘outspoken’ and ‘speaking their mind’ increasingly have more disposable income.

washrinse · 21/09/2023 13:33

I'm racking my brains and cannot think of a holiday we've been on as a family with annoying drunk people or bad behaviour generally. Holidays have ranged from European beach hotels to British seaside. It sounds like we've been really lucky!

Graciebobcat · 21/09/2023 13:35

No, me neither. I can only think of a loud parenting dad who also allowed his boys to take over the pool rather on holiday in one place, but I remember that as it was unusual.

Or to save time - where the obnoxious family from the On The Beach Advert WON’T be.

TrainWrexham · 21/09/2023 13:41

We try and avoid these types. By never going to resorts, never doing AI and always booking smaller hotels. I then ‘cross-reference’ by checking that Jet2 and Tui don’t use them. Snobby of me? Yep.

It is still unavoidable. Loud performative sunbed-hoggers holiday everywhere.

Oh Christ I’ve just read that you’re in IKOS @SleeplessinSeattle53

I’ve never done AI but I say to DP that that’s the only one I’d consider (for when having a baby forces us to holiday differently…). Such a shame it’s not devoid of FFHs. 😭

hellswelshy · 21/09/2023 13:58

This thread is making me laugh! We went to Majorca in August to an AI as its what my teens enjoy. Honestly it was mainly great apart from a few inconsiderate people as always, not enough to ruin my holiday but still 🙄 Especially the adult woman feeling the need to launch herself into the pool belly flopping on to a pool float, in what was the busiest pool I'd ever been in!!? I mean, really?? I'd have ignored a child doing it but an grown woman? I had to get out then for fear of being injured. I do quite enjoy people watching though, even FFH category.

Yep, sorry.

It's really very lovely. Apart from all the twats.

Of course they do. They don’t admit it here though. Spoils the snobby middle class vibe!

I love one unreasonably family on holiday, preferably overweight, smoking around children, drinking too much and arguing.

It is like watching an episode of Shameless and very cathartic

Me too! We love watching them load up their plates!

Youspoilus · 21/09/2023 14:42

Do sani @Usernamen

much better in my experience

SleeplessinSeattle53 · 21/09/2023 14:42

There's a couple here attempting to drink the place dry of rosé. Ordering glass after glass after glass to their sunbeds. Must have had two bottles each. Determined to get their £2k+ each worth. Am judging them hard.

The worst I encountered was a young couple on sun loungers by the pool, she topless, he stroking her whilst she read aloud to him from 50 shades of grey. At a basic all inclusive in canaries. Creepy
