Roman Empire female equivalent

HeadChog · 12/09/2023 22:21

Inspired by the Roman Empire thread, I wondered whether there is an equivalent thing that women think about a lot but men never do.

I reckon I think about Michael Jackson a lot more than my DH. I probably think about MJ at least 3-4 times a week.

Anyone else think about one obscure thing, unconnected with work or hobbies, a lot?

THE FUTURE!

am obsessed with how people will look and how life will be in 100, 500 years time. (Worse probably)

And how photos or footage of how we are now will not date (like old B&W images did) and how our digital lives (our photos, videos, posts), will just linger in the cloud FOR ETERNITY (or until climate change gets the better of us)

And how everyone in the future will have access to the minutiae of our lives in a way that’s totally unprecedented in history. Historians will have very little research to do because it’s all laid out for them.

I think that AI will transform every aspect of our lives (and all that) BUT a lot of things (like houses and streets, people walking dogs, wearing leisurewear and trainers) will probably look largely the same in 100 years time as they do now.

I think about this EVERY DAY.

Oo snap! And I once had a very similar Mumsnet name to you 🤔
Along with Romans 2/3 times a week I also think about Leonard Cohen most days.Edit: that was meant to be in reply to the zombie and medieval ancestors post from @ApocalypseNowt

Lord Peter Wimsey

Dark matter and Dark energy

Chrestomanci

The actual moment of my own death.

weegiemum · 13/09/2023 21:22

All the mistakes I've made and people I've hurt and my general stupidity.

I'm on the highest dose I can be of my antidepressant, and this is a lot better than before!!

UnconventionalLife · 13/09/2023 21:32

I had a massive phase of obsessively reading about the fall of the Russian Empire. That lasted a few years & I racked up quite a few books & a LOT of hours thinking about it all. I was planning a trip to Russia in 2020 but covid put oaid to that & now.....not sure it'll ever happen.

I am currently v occupied mentally with James Joyce / Sylvia Beach / literary Paris in the 20s. Again its taking up a lot of my brain space & I spent hours reading, thinking, looking stuff up, staring at old photos online. I love it & can't imagine life without having these 'obsessions ' to focus on...

TheClitterati · 13/09/2023 21:33

I spend much time fretting and/or wondering about the universe, it's possible infinity, does it have an edge, what's on the other side etc.

I don't read books about it or anything 😂😂. I'm not an expert. But it's probably what I think about most.

hot2trotter · 13/09/2023 21:49

Dying. Most days. I scare myself and have to work so hard to push it out of my mind.

Sophie89j · 13/09/2023 22:00

I recon I probably think about vikings several times a week randomly.

magratvonlipwig · 13/09/2023 22:09

History. The history of society. Like what happenned 100s of years ago that led to a current opinion or habit that really makes no sense . Why do we do what we do !

BohemondofAntioch · 13/09/2023 22:31

Me too. Also the Alexiad of Anna Comnena.

Quite a niche interest for social media....

AngryBirdsNoMore · 13/09/2023 22:54

Ah, genuinely sad that we’ve had a whole two pages without the Tudors. I felt like we had a potential coming together of womanhood there, with the more than half a dozen references to them. I was delighted I wasn’t alone in my fascination.

They seem to have been taken over by apocalypse planning…

Witches

I’ve really enjoyed reading this thread and it’s the first time I’ve felt compelled to join in 😊

As a SAHM I find I frequently obsess over certain trails of thought, the Roman Empire however is not one of them, despite having studied Latin.

I am completely obsessed with looking for perfect holiday destinations, I will spend hours researching hotels and villas, then the perfect ones are added to my bucket list. This links to the wealth plan, where I know exactly which house I will buy on Rightmove when the multimillions roll in, along with who I will take on holiday to this gorgeous villa I found in Turks and Caicos.

I regularly get caught up thinking about how I would renovate my dad’s house (super weird layout) and rearrange furniture.

I also spend a lot of time thinking about what happens to our consciousness when we die. Having been bought up Catholic, I previously believed we would all end up in heaven, only now I think our energy just transforms and that one day I’ll just be part of a tree. But this gives me the fear so I try not to think about it.

I love to play the apocalypse game, we bulk buy and have a fancy medical kit- if nothing else at least we would have plenty to trade with! 😂

AliceOlive · 14/09/2023 00:55

It’s an amazing thread. I never thought about what I spend my time thinking about. Or what other people think about. It makes me look at people differently. And myself also.

ALongHardWinter · 14/09/2023 01:57

The Tudors.
Neolithic/Bronze age/Stone age people and how they lived with no modern technology.
Nuclear war.
How I'd spend 10 million pounds.
Depeche Mode.

What we’re going to have for dinner tonight etc.

Justdontforgethelegofrog · 14/09/2023 06:14

@Xiaoxiong or a social worker. I do that too.

CalmaLlamaDown · 14/09/2023 06:25

Sinead O’Connor

Since she died, I can’t stop thinking about her.

I have her song Three Babies on a continuous loop in my head.

Only4nomore · 14/09/2023 07:42

Greek mythology and possibly the tudors

Kucinghitam · 14/09/2023 07:49

The vastness of the Universe and the passage of Deep Time.

CocoaMojo · 14/09/2023 08:09

Aragorn pushing open the doors in the Two Towers, definitely!!

pollyglot · 14/09/2023 08:32

Definitely a Roman Empire girl. I think about it...oh at least 100 times a day. Possibly more. Sometimes I even think about the Roman Republic. I've been teaching Latin and Classical Studies/Ancient History for 40 years. Do you think there's a pill for the condition?

Aworldofwonder · 14/09/2023 08:42

I could never admit this in real life but I frequently think about nazi Germany. I think about it in great depth. I know very little about the historical details (which would be less embarrassing).

I find myself mentally playing different roles in situations and I'll stay in one role for ages really going deep and trying to feel it.

For example, I'm under the floorboards hiding with my baby in my arms and she starts to stir. The Nazis are walking around the house. I'll hear every detail.

Or I'm in the queue for the chambers with my mum. I am going trying to find inner stillness and acceptance.

Or I'm a member of The Party and it's all starting to dawn on me what's really happening.

And so on.

Trickytimer · 14/09/2023 08:43

Ted Lasso and thinking the world would be a much better place if we all lived by his mantras
