Roman Empire female equivalent

HeadChog · 12/09/2023 22:21

Inspired by the Roman Empire thread, I wondered whether there is an equivalent thing that women think about a lot but men never do.

I reckon I think about Michael Jackson a lot more than my DH. I probably think about MJ at least 3-4 times a week.

Anyone else think about one obscure thing, unconnected with work or hobbies, a lot?

Oh God. Yes. I think about this a lot. Several times a week - especially when I have time to look at the night sky. Or watch Brian Cox.

I used to when I was a child, also the heat death of the universe, which I was extremely upset about. My parents were a bit nonplussed at how to comfort me about this - "you'll be long dead" didn't cut it.

I think about retirement every day. Every single day. Only 24 years to go.

slobro · 14/09/2023 18:45

I don't have time to muse on the Holy Roman bloody Empire. Maybe this is why we can't find a female equivalent!

Actually though most of my thoughts are consumed by OCD and intrusive thoughts.

Much sympathy. My husband's too - which is why I'm pretty sure he doesn't think about the Roman Empire much. Too busy going back to check if he closed the fridge properly and worrying about whether our electrics are safe (they are). It's hard. I had intrusive thoughts post-partum and got an insight into what it's like for him all the time :(

Oh I don't think anyone thinks about the Holy Roman Empire. We're too busy thinking about the OG version.

I’m a Roman Empire type of gal.

Same. Mad bastards the lot of them, but interesting times.

JaneFarrier · 14/09/2023 20:11

@Istanbulnotconstantinople72 nah, not Colin Firth, but I do think about They Might Be Giants most days.

JaneFarrier · 14/09/2023 20:15

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn I always thought Aragorn should wash his hair more (and wounds, more quickly - lucky he didn't go septic).

All of your things seem like perfectly good things to think about, though.

Pockets ie clothing that has them, clothing that doesn't have them, depth of pocket, what it fits, etc.

Lord Peter Wimsey

Dark matter and Dark energy

Chrestomanci

The actual moment of my own death.

I like your taste in books.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/09/2023 20:23

I think about Rome probably daily

I also think about James Purefoy on a daily basis

I think the two are probably connected

And there I am, actually taking this advice on board.

Well, you are travelling forwards, but only in the way we all are.

Chocolatefountainfan · 14/09/2023 20:32

I constantly look for signs that history is real rather than made up. I scrutinise exhibits in museums and old buildings to convince myself that ancient worlds really existed and aren’t manufactured aka The Truman Show.

When I can’t sleep, I run through the alphabet to see how many male and female names I can come up with for each letter.

I also look at celebrity photos and videos to check for evidence that they really are human - it’s really hard to believe that people like Ariana Grande and Jennifer Aniston poop and fart like the rest of us!

Maybe I’m a weirdo!!

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 14/09/2023 20:46

I think about Fred and Rosemary West more than I think is normal 🤔

mauveiscurious · 14/09/2023 21:25

Just asked DS about how much he thinks about the Roman Empire

"About once a week, however if Rome had succeeded we would have been intergalactic travellers by now, as the trajectory of their technology was impressive"

I think about Neanderthals and hunter gatherers fairly often, at least a few times a week if not more.

Me too. We're still learning so much about the Neanderthals. It was such a revelation to find out that we did actually interbreed. Ancient human history is way more exciting than people think.

I think about murders and crime a lot. Probably daily. I am weird?

Nope! Same here, currently mainly the golden state killer, along with Robert Chambers (due to listening to the Killers a lot recently, especially Jenny was a friend of mine, which is based on that murder)

The pocket conspiracy, women's clothing has a lack of pockets to encourage the buying of bags!!

I swear if anyone compliments an item of clothing I have and it happens to have pockets, they are the first thing I mention, excitedly!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/09/2023 23:28

I often wonder what certain celebrities are doing right now.

I got this from a woman who worked in the industry: it’s an easy way to save tons in labor and material during the manufacturing process. Far easier to design and produce garments without pockets and they only do it to women because men would never buy pants without pockets but we will.

I used to plan out how I would react if someone broke into my house while I was in it.

wheresmymojo · 15/09/2023 00:25

Dogs and cats

Feminism and patriarchy

Neurodiversity

AI and existential threat to humanity

Quantum mechanics and whether we live in a simulation

Near death experiences and past life regression and how that could link (or not) to living in a simulation.

I used to do a version of the getting-to-sleep thing except I'd try to think of a song beginning with each letter. Or if I was really trying for a challenge (and I'd done the songs already) a poem. Don't think I ever got to Z with poems! I got the idea from a book, I think (maybe A Ring Of Endless Light).

Your museum approach is interesting. I'd be more apt to take artefacts as what they say they are, and doubt historical accounts of events - I work with historical documents and get a direct view of how biased they can be.

CoffeeCantata · 15/09/2023 09:15

I don't need a "female equivalent". I think of the Roman Empire every day, several times!

Fascinating - the characters of the emperors, the technology, the violence which was accepted as part of daily life - the horrors of the Colosseum, for example.

An amazing mixture of incredible efficiency and technological advance and horrific barbarity. Love them or hate them, their engineering feats are breath-taking.

(But do we need to get reparations from Italy for conquest and ensuing slavery? Hmmm.)

MinnieMountain · 15/09/2023 12:17

Consistently- what book I’m reading next, are there any to add up my reasoning pile, is my reading pile big enough.

The Roman Empire too at the moment as I’ve just started reading Robert Harris’s Pompei, I’m watching I Claudius, I’m seeing Mary Beard’s book tour soon and we’ve got a family holiday to Rome in October.
