Pls help me find where to buy humane meat

I am looking for meat which is raised under highest standards of animal welfare: free-range obviously, and killed on the farm to avoid the stress of transportation to an abattoir.
Ideally in Wales as that’s where I live, but keen to hear of places further afield if they have a website and can purchase online.
Can anyone suggest anywhere?

I highly recommend Elwood's - local, organic, humanely slaughtered meat 💜

I don't find the idea of eating dog shocking. It's not something that's done in this country, but it's a relatively arbitrary culturally imposed taboo, just as certain cultures and religions don't eat beef or pork or shellfish. But then I don't have any sentimental attachment to dogs.

I don't have strong feelings about eating dogs as a species, but the treatment, conditions and method and slaughter are horrific in places where dogs are eaten.

Unfortunately dealing with a living animal means you can’t get a direct cut so yes it is.

maybe I didn't explain well.... if an animal is killed in the way you described, that meat is no longer halal, neither myself, nor any of the muslims i know would ever eat meat killed in that way. the guidance very very clearly states that the animal cannot suffer during slaughter. this requires huge skill... I lived in Bangladesh for many years and saw a lot of halal slaughter, never saw anything like what you described. not saying it doesn't happen and that people won't sell it on despite knowing its not right... but that happens in non halal abattoirs too and I have seen plenty of videos of those :-(

Try plant based alternatives. There is really no such thing as humane meat. None of those animals want to be killed when they have lived only a fraction of their lives.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 08/07/2023 21:16

TBF I actually clicked on this thread to read about humane animal production as whilst I don't eat meat myself, family members do and I would rather that if people do eat meat, that the animals are kept in the beer conditions possible.

I haven't seen any alternative that isn't ultra processed. I love many natural vegan foods but they are nothing like meat

Trouble is they are all UPFs.

SideBob · 08/07/2023 21:23

Think vegans need to realise that saying just don't eat meat, doesn't help. If you've eaten meat every day for 40 years, you probably aren't going to stop overnight and keep it up.

It's difficult to commit to, even when you disagree with many farming practices.

Moving on to more eating more ethically reared meat is really good. And if people decide they want to go further, then they can in time.

There's no such thing as humane meat. The animals are just as dead regardless.

This.

To determine if something is humane, think, would you want it done to YOU or your loved ones? Ridiculous question 🙄

EmeraldFox · 08/07/2023 21:39

I don't understand why vegans come onto these threads and post what they do. Surely if you care about animals then you should be happy that people are choosing to eat meat from animals kept outside much of the year, that can behave in more natural ways, fed a good diet and so on? Yes they still die, that's why they have been bred, what they have been raised for. But why discourage better welfare?

notprincehamlet · 08/07/2023 21:41

Definitely read that as human meat
Same. Was going to suggest Royston Vasey.

Me too and I opened this thread in horror - I couldn't hold back.
Phew!

2bazookas · 08/07/2023 21:55

All mammalian livestock in UK must be killed in a registered slaughterhouse; that includes halal meat. Nobody can kill it on their farm.

notprincehamlet · 08/07/2023 21:59

TBH I think you'll struggle to find any butchers selling meat from cows that have died in their sleep after a long and fulfilling life

imaginationhasfailedme · 08/07/2023 22:10

Maybe contact local, smallholders and ask them where their meat is slaughtered.
We had an accidental litter of piglets (a pig we'd rehomed was pregnant and we weren't told). They live in woodlands, free to do what they like, snuffle all the bulbs and walnuts from the tree, all bundle in together despite having multiple arcs to choose from!
When we had to get some slaughtered, I researched so hard to find a small place. I'm vegetarian and knew that I needed to make it as calm as possible. There aren't many small abbatoirs but I found one that isn't commercial or have hundreds a day. It was the best I could do with a situation I really didn't want to be in. As a smallholding, we love these animals and I never had any intention of having to do this so worked hard to do best by them.

Mama678 · 08/07/2023 22:13

Imo halal is the most cruelest way to kill an animal. Its hung upside down, in a room it can smell death in, and neck slashed so it bleeds to death thrashing around? No but tbf thats what most supermarket/restaurant meat is so it is difficult to find an alternative

No meat is humane, the animal is sentient, it knows it's going to be killed, they all scream waiting for their turn, how can any of that be humane.

Ofcourseshecan · 08/07/2023 22:29

Halal and kosher butchery is cruel to animals. Ritual killing, including halal and kosher, is about religion, not animal welfare. The UK government had to allow Muslims and observant Jews an exemption from animal-welfare laws!

The animal’s throat is cut and it bleeds to death, usually while fully conscious. The RSPCA and the British Veterinary Association have pressed for the law to require animals to be stunned first, but without success. Some halal meat is stunned, but this isn’t common.

There’s no law enforcing labelling of ritually slaughtered meat, so you’ve probably eaten it without knowing. But definitely don’t choose halal or kosher meat!

Rubyupbeat · 08/07/2023 22:33

I just love the nastiness to vegetarian or vegan practices, why? It's our choice. But I suppose saying about shitting glass etc... shows the level of intelligence on those who mock.

This thread is about meat, vegans turned up suggesting upfs instead.

Royalbloo · 08/07/2023 22:46

Humane? They don't sing them to death. Or hug them to the after life.

After looking at it objectively I think the "halal" way, where they are stunned before being killed is the most humane way but yet people have a serious issue with halal meat?!!!!!

Whataretheodds · 08/07/2023 22:47

Pawleygirl · 08/07/2023 19:38

I'm from another country, but I would look up any places that specify halal or kosher. Those should be the most humane places, and they would kill their animals humanely as well.

Nope!
