Pls help me find where to buy humane meat

I am looking for meat which is raised under highest standards of animal welfare: free-range obviously, and killed on the farm to avoid the stress of transportation to an abattoir.
Ideally in Wales as that’s where I live, but keen to hear of places further afield if they have a website and can purchase online.
Can anyone suggest anywhere?

Halal and kosher are the most humane. The animal doesn't suffer like it does ages when it's stunned. Clearly some mumsnetters have no idea what halal and kosher mean if they think frying an animals brains first is more humane 🤣🤣

Only two deer are native, Red deer (Cervus elaphus) and Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

Other deer in UK are Fallow deer which were almost certainly introduced by the Normans while three Asiatic species, Reeves' muntjac, Chinese water deer and sika arrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

List of invasive non-native (alien) animals

Check this list to find out which animals are widely and non-widely spread, and when they were listed:

Widely spreadCommon name Scientific name When it was listed
Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis 3 August 2016
Egyptian goose Alopochen aegyptiacus 2 August 2017
Grey squirrel Sciurus carolinensis 3 August 2016
Muntjac deer Muntiacus reevesi 3 August 2016 (already mentioned.
Signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus 3 August 2016
Terrapins - all subspecies including red-eared slider, yellow-bellied slider, Cumberland slider and common slider Trachemys scripta 3 August 2016

Do they need 'managing' ? Since wolves were exterminated from UK some animals have no natural enemies.

I think you quoted the wrong poster, or are you agreeing with me?

I'm an ecologist so yes I know the list you shared with me.

Quite a few butchers sell squirrel meat also.

tt9 · 08/07/2023 20:22

human meat very hard to find in the UK. I've tried and tried. think you have to organise your own.... I understand the first step is to build a gingerbread cottage? I'm just about to finish icing mine, was real challenge!

@Westcoastwoman if you don't have it this is an excellent book. Sorry OP I'll stop derailing your thread 😊

I think perhaps I did.🤔

I wasn't particularly agreeing with anyone just including a list for interest, because someone asked about 'controlling non-native invasive species'.

Rabbits are non-native, I believe the Romans or the Normans brought them to UK no doubt someone will put me right about that.

Gulikitti · 08/07/2023 20:13

Yes they are they are asking about humane meat, venison and much of wild game are invasive species such as deer that are controlled and sold as meat.

If you want to quote me in the future get you facts straight.

If you want to quote me in the future get you facts straight

Rather aggressive. So what's likely to happen in future if I don't get my fact straight?

Things like deer may be invasive but they are generally killed differently from the sort of animals OP is talking about as she/he refers to animals being killed on 'the farm' and not being 'transported to abattoirs', which rather indicates farm animals rather than wild game or venison.

I'm from another country, but I would look up any places that specify halal or kosher. Those should be the most humane places, and they would kill their animals humanely as well.

Not sure you know much about how Halal meat is produced otherwise why would you suggest such a cruel practice?

Yep rabbits are now classed as naturalised now though 😀. A bit like Roman snails, which are protected.

I found a local farm through a friend of a friend. Rare breed animals who are treated well.

I eat these animals. I eat less meat but better meat. I use everything, I boil bones to make stock.

My diet is about 70% vegetarian.

@Pawleygirl halal slaughter requires severing of the carotid artery with a single incision. it requires for the animal to be well treated, brought up comfortably and soothed with kindness before slaughter. slaughter cannot take place before other animals. animals can be prestunned (as long as they don't die in the process or it causes them distress). they have to be attended to by a human and if the animals suffer in the process, that meat is not halal. unfortunately there are a lot of myths about halal slaughter and a lot of places that advertise themselves as 'halal' but aren't really that have cruel practices. kosher is very similar with added restrictions.

tt9 · 08/07/2023 20:54

@Talkingtothetrees unfortunately the tory glad rags have been spreading these myths for a while. helps with anti immigration sentiment. the cut has to be a single incision to the carotid artery which supplies oxygen to the brain so the animal loses consciousness immediately and dies pretty soon after. the blood is drained out afterwards by a separate process as blood is deemed haram (we can't eat black pudding etc). animals can be prestunned (although there are differences of opinion on this). if the animal suffers or doesnt die straight away, it is no longer halal. the rules on halal are extremely detailed, not just random slashing! putting electricity through the brain also is no guaranteee of instant death. have looked at some footage if you like. unfortunately a lot of halal abattoirs don't practice the slaughter as they should, so not saying all halal meat is ethical (and therefore probably questionable as to their true status as halal) but the theological guidance itself is sound.

LuckyStone · 08/07/2023 20:56

Google pasture raised beef. Some great options of cows who have spent most of their lives outside, same with pork.

I’ve seen a halal slaughter. The cow tried to run away and slipped in its own blood.

then it is definitely not halal.

That’s good to know thank you for explaining x

Kindofcrunchy · 08/07/2023 21:00

The "highest standards of animal welfare" would generally include not keeping them in squalor and then killing them for food, imo

HairMb · 08/07/2023 21:00

But anyway I think my favourite most humane way is the Co2 gondola that they kill pigs in.

HairMb · 08/07/2023 21:01

tt9 · 08/07/2023 21:00

then it is definitely not halal.

Unfortunately dealing with a living animal means you can’t get a direct cut so yes it is.

norijunior · 08/07/2023 21:01

When I switched from being vegetarian to eating meat I did quite a lot of research on this. Soil Association certified organic meat has very good welfare standards, even for fish. On packets it's sometimes shown as organic certification UK5.

Ontopofthesunset · 08/07/2023 21:02

I don't find the idea of eating dog shocking. It's not something that's done in this country, but it's a relatively arbitrary culturally imposed taboo, just as certain cultures and religions don't eat beef or pork or shellfish. But then I don't have any sentimental attachment to dogs.

Have you tried searching for "long pig"? If you eat regular pig you might as well eat people too tbh. Why discriminate?!

I don’t care either. It’s all arbitrary. Eat them all. Lolz.

Does it come in organic?
