Pls help me find where to buy humane meat

I am looking for meat which is raised under highest standards of animal welfare: free-range obviously, and killed on the farm to avoid the stress of transportation to an abattoir.
Ideally in Wales as that’s where I live, but keen to hear of places further afield if they have a website and can purchase online.
Can anyone suggest anywhere?

Lots of back and forth here about how the animal is killed. The OP also asked about how it was raised which is, if you are going to still eat it, more important.
Killing is killing. In the UK I'm not sure that halal or kosher meat is free range or particularly well treated before it's sent to slaughter. Hopefully someone can speak to this.

Genuine question- I’m vegan and I’ve never given protein a second thought. I just eat a varied diet tbh. Is protein even an issue in developed countries?
I go gym, lift weights etc and I’ve never counted protein.
I dint supplement and recently had full bloods due to a peri menopause issue- they did b12 etc and everything was perfect.
Surely balanced diet isn’t dependent on vegan or non vegan but about eating a good variety of food

I don't do at all well on a legume, fruit and vegetables, and grain based diet long term. Are you eating ultra processed vegan foods, quorn or similar? We are all different as well, some people's bodies cope better than others.

OrlandointheWilderness · 09/07/2023 08:53

Local producers, local farms. Farm shops. Always by British and lots of farms now sell direct.
Game is excellent - worth asking around and seeing if there is a local shoot as there will be a lot of pheasant and partridge going through the season. If not there is a brilliant FB page called 'giving up the game' that connects people with game to people who want it. It's also usually incredibly cheap or free. I have a big freezer stocked with pheasant/partridge/teal (duck)/ mallard/ venison and goose, and all of it was sourced in the local area, and most of it was shot my my DP.

I don’t eat quorn at all or any fake meats- I don’t like meat and have been vegetarian since I was 11, vegan for 10 years so they don’t appeal to me.
I eat veg, beans lentils etc

If you don't supplement you must be getting your B12 somewhere - maybe fortified plant milks/yogurts or plant based meat alternatives?

I had what I would consider to be a balanced healthy vegan diet. I used to track my food on an app. I would barely scrape my protein intake (had between 30 and 40g a day usually) and my carbs would be through the roof.

I usually make my own oat milk but yea, it must be from somewhere like you say. I use shop bought coconut milk.
I’ve never tracked protein, I’ve never really thought about it. I do love a carb though but that’s more being a massive pasta fan than a vegan. Mostly I eat brown rice and pasta.. not sure if that helps 🤣.
I just find it interesting the threads on vegan diet being insufficient when I’ve never given it another thought and am very healthy on the whole

I guess different bodies cope differently. I experienced anaemia, depression, fatigue, Wright gain, my body doesn't cope well. I could happily go to a vegan commune for a month but no longer. I was the same on a low meat (about 250g a week in a chilli/bolognese/curry) diet too. I do much better with more meat and eggs.

Orchidgal · 09/07/2023 10:22

Thanks so much @Maraudingmarauders and also to everyone else who has also shared brilliant suggestions, I’m going to be compiling a list and checking out all these places.

The chances are your b12 might be fine now, but won't be in a few years time. Levels don't drop instantly, you will probably have a decent reserve. If you're eating a vegan diet it is really important that you supplement with b12, it is one of the key things we can only get from animal products, and b12 deficiency is unpleasant, potentially life changing and eventually fatal. I wouldn't rely on getting enough from occasional shop bought coconut milk if it were me (assuming that even has b12 added?).

GreenMini · 09/07/2023 10:26

It's illegal to sell the meat of most home-killed animals, so you're unlikely to find that for sale.
The only meat I might consider eating would be game, shot from the wild. But shooting for sport is not an industry I would want to support either.

FourChimneys · 09/07/2023 08:07

I agree with you about baby steps OP.

I haven't found a good reason to eat meat for over 50 years but for some people it needs to be a gradual change.

I'm not going to stop eating meat and most people who eat it won't. Why should we change 🤷‍♀️

Wasnt there a thing a few years ago about different blood types needing different diets? Maybe something in that!
I have luckily never suffered with any of those things- anemia a few times in pregnancy. I don’t really get fatigue either but also have ADHD so possibly why

That’s interesting because I’ve been vegan 10 years so I’d have thought B12 would’ve dropped by now.

Gettingbysomehow · 09/07/2023 11:21

There is no humane meat. Animals are not given a general anaesthetic to be slaughtered and many are not stunned properly. The only way round this is to eat vegetarian or vegan. Don't kid yourself.
I dont particularly like vegetarian food but I've been one for 40 years and my DS his whole life and we'll continue to be vegetarian until meat for eating is 100% grown in a laboratory.

The reality is, though, that as somebody who has no intention of giving up eating meat and animal products, this sort of response from people who say they love animals strikes me as counterproductive to improving the lives of food animals. If it really makes no difference in terms of animal welfare then I’ll simply not bother trying to find meat that describes itself as high welfare and sustainably sourced. It’s no odds to me, in fact it’s ultimately better for my purse. Personally I’d rather be an animal which free-ranged during life and didn’t travel far to its death, but if animal rights folks don’t believe there’s actually any difference at all to the animal then I’ll just keep buying the cheaper stuff raised in a dark shed.

SideBob · 09/07/2023 15:26

Yes I agree @ComtesseDeSpair

But if vegans admit there is a difference, then how can they convince anyone to go vegan? Then people will just keep buying ethically reared meat.

I think vegans need to realise that people who eat meat don't take moral issue with animals being killed, it's accepted that that's how it is in farming. But many people do not like the idea of poor quality of life and mistreatment. That is what some people cannot grasp.

TonTonMacoute · 09/07/2023 15:56

To OP, find a good local butcher, or failing that a local farmers market or farm shop. Be prepared to pay more than in the supermarket.

I live in the countryside and buy nearly all my meat direct from friends who farm. I know the animals are well looked after and that great care is taken about how they are dispatched. I have no moral qualms about eating animals that have been farmed in this way.

Carouselfish · 09/07/2023 16:02

I mean WOW at the person suggesting halal. That's even worse than the alternative - they are strung upside down to bleed out.
OP, agree with trying shot venison or wild boar. That's what we have at Christmas (rest of the time we are veggie) to accommodate meat eaters in the family. Some farms may have licenses to kill chickens/a 'kill van' that comes to them, but you'd have to ask.

Carouselfish · 09/07/2023 16:06

Also recommend the book The Mindful Carnivore.
Recognise not everyone is going to manage being vegan. Being as ethical as they can be is still better than not @ComtesseDeSpair
I do hope and pray for the day lab grown meat is all there is. Then there is absolutely no excuse.
