To feel pissed off that everyone is spelling my new baby’s name wrong?

We’ve named our new baby a name which has several legitimate and well used spellings. The spelling we’ve gone with is actually the original spelling, but is the second most popular spelling in use in the UK currently. Think Isabelle versus Isabel for example. It’s not a made up or unknown spelling, and is completely phonetic. The name itself isn’t particularly unusual.

Almost everyone is already spelling the baby’s name wrong - over half of our new baby cards are spelt wrong. I’ve literally texted people “meet baby ‘Isabelle’” and right below they’ve written something like “congratulations, ‘Isabel’ is beautiful” etc.

I knew the spelling would be an issue going forward but I sort of expected people might be able to read what I’d written and spell it right the moment they were told the name. It’s probably just my hormones, but AIBU to think it’s quite rude not to make the effort to spell the baby’s name correctly in the new baby card?

It is rude, but i think you'll have to get used to it, as will your child, unfortunately.

SouthCountryGirl · 10/06/2023 19:47

You have my sympathy. I keep getting people replying to me on social media and they still spell my name wrong. (Think Anna / Ann / Anne)

Not unreasonable to expect people to read the name you've spelt and spell it properly.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 10/06/2023 19:47

Probably autocorrect

UpaladderwatchingTV · 10/06/2023 19:47

Sorry OP, I think you are being just a little unreasonable. Maybe think yourself lucky that people are taking the time and trouble to send you a card, a spelling error with a name really isn't THAT important. I get it all the time, even though I spell my name out on the phone, if it's followed up with a letter or email, it's almost always spelt incorrectly. I'm afraid people are just a bit lazy about these things. Congratulations on the new baby!

Superdupes · 10/06/2023 19:48

I think it's a bit careless but easily done, I'm sure no one would have meant to upset you. In things like this I always try to go on intent - because I can be terrible for making mistakes like this too.

Sirzy · 10/06/2023 19:48

by your own admission you knew it would be an issue so best to get used to it now.

snowlady4 · 10/06/2023 19:48

I am 40 and still get this with my name. People just don't care about other people's names tbh. Don't let it get to you too much!

AllIwantforChristmas22 · 10/06/2023 19:48

I have a name that can be spelled two ways (think Clare/Claire) and people constantly spell it wrong. Even when replying to emails.

congratulations to your baby!

Daisythecat15 · 10/06/2023 19:48

Eh, I have a name like this and people have spelt it wrong my whole life.

bussteward · 10/06/2023 19:48

It’s rude but people are stupid and lazy.

Soupsetscared · 10/06/2023 19:49

My DH has name which can have either 1 'n' or 2 'n's his is spelt with the 2.
He is 65 and most friends and lots of family spell it wrong.
Even if I tell them they still do it.
People are ignorant.

PurBal · 10/06/2023 19:49

Variation of spelling is the reason my top name was discarded. It’s going to happen unfortunately.

Plumbear2 · 10/06/2023 19:49

I hope you have thanked them for the card. I think you are just going to have to get used to it, it's an easy mistake

Avondale89 · 10/06/2023 19:50

This will be a common occurrence if you’ve chosen a name with several legitimate spellings and yours is not the most popular. I’m sure close family and friends will learn how to spell it soon. However you’ll likely have the same issue forever more, one way or another. I too have a name with a couple of legitimate spellings, so it’s often a toss up if it’s correct. I really don’t care, but I’d advise you either make peace with it or change the name.

Gtsr443 · 10/06/2023 19:51

I'm in my 50s and nobody ever spells my name correctly. Even if it's written in front of them - as if I dont know how to spell my own name!
Don't take it to heart OP.

AlltheFs · 10/06/2023 19:51

It is rude, but it is why we ruled out names with different spellings as it would drive me crackers.

Avondale89 · 10/06/2023 19:51

bussteward · 10/06/2023 19:48

It’s rude but people are stupid and lazy.

and this isn’t rude? It’s nice of people
to make an effort and send cards. I’m sure the mistakes were made without malice.

SpringOn · 10/06/2023 19:51

Yup.
Name with many spellings means people will often get it wrong.

PieonaBarm · 10/06/2023 19:52

People spell mine wrong all the time, think i/y ending. When it's there in my email address, how I've signed off the email and then again in my formal email signature.

I always make a point of checking how a name is spelt as it drives me bonkers. It takes a second. YANBU.

KnitMePurlMe · 10/06/2023 19:52

I remember a friend ranting about this on Facebook a few years ago as EVERYONE (according to her) spelt her son’s name wrong.

What I found hilarious was I’d known this woman for 10 years and not once had she spelt my name right (very common 70s name 🤷‍♀️).

If it bothers you change it to a name that can’t be misspelt - otherwise prepare for a lifetime of misspelling 🤷‍♀️

ReachForTheMars · 10/06/2023 19:52

Yanbu, its lazy.

Elphame · 10/06/2023 19:53

Mine is always being got wrong. Still bugs me as I hate the alternative which is actually a valid name in its own right, very slightly different from mine and which I dislike intensely!

OfficerPastiche · 10/06/2023 19:53

Will you be even more annoyed when she/he gets an easier nickname as a teen?
Don't sweat the small stuff. At least people give enough of a shit to respond to your texts, send cards etc.

Upinspacemannnnn · 10/06/2023 19:54

Please tell us the name😊

watcherintherye · 10/06/2023 19:54

ToBeOrNotToBee · 10/06/2023 19:47

Probably autocorrect

Not on ‘new baby’ cards!
