To feel pissed off that everyone is spelling my new baby’s name wrong?

We’ve named our new baby a name which has several legitimate and well used spellings. The spelling we’ve gone with is actually the original spelling, but is the second most popular spelling in use in the UK currently. Think Isabelle versus Isabel for example. It’s not a made up or unknown spelling, and is completely phonetic. The name itself isn’t particularly unusual.

Almost everyone is already spelling the baby’s name wrong - over half of our new baby cards are spelt wrong. I’ve literally texted people “meet baby ‘Isabelle’” and right below they’ve written something like “congratulations, ‘Isabel’ is beautiful” etc.

I knew the spelling would be an issue going forward but I sort of expected people might be able to read what I’d written and spell it right the moment they were told the name. It’s probably just my hormones, but AIBU to think it’s quite rude not to make the effort to spell the baby’s name correctly in the new baby card?

My son's name ends NY but sometimes phones autocorrect it to IE

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2023 14:27

They are still a thing, just about, but the processing is automated these days.
I've had ones with the wrong spelling of surname refused.

You might not mind the wrong spelling of names, but others might.
I'm not too bothered if it's the surname misspelt, unless it means more work for me, but I mind if they get the name wrong. The 'I can't be arsed to remember your surname so I'll put Smith ' seems lazy.

The your name can't really be just Ann so I'll put Annabella/Annita/Annakin just seems twatty (not the actual names but that sort of thing)

Thanks for being good about it as I was aware I might come across as a bit of an arse pointing it out.

It was the Isabel example that did it. OP was very clear that she wanted to preserve anonymity, so I think it’s probably a boy! Someone up thread (who was reading the OP properly 😂) suggested Caspar. OP hasn’t been back for ages and is studiously ignoring anyone who thinks it’s Isabel I’ve noticed!

I’m here 😂 I’m just not replying to people trying to guess the name because if I wanted to say the name I’d have written it in my original post 🤪

@GwinCoch , it is common in Wales. The first name was usually a family name like a grandparent's name. I can think of families where at half the children went by their middle names, or couples where both are known by the middle name.
People can be rude or ignorant about names and seem to struggle with names as complicated as Nia.

Indeed! I don’t need people to understand or appreciate my culture. But please call me by the name on my bank card which isn’t Nia but is also two syllables and not hard to say!

NotEverORNever · 16/06/2023 16:48

I still don't get why it actually matters though. People nearly always spell my name incorrectly. (Including family 😅) Maybe some of them are being a bit lazy but so what?

I find it a bit sad that people are so precious about their names that a few letters out of place bothers them.

CurlewKate · 16/06/2023 18:01

@NotEverORNever "I still don't get why it actually matters though."

Me neither. Someone even misspelled my username earlier-presumably to show me how awful it was! Little did they know that some of my username is my real name-misspelled!

You guessed right on both accounts , his brothers also have names that frequently get misspelled I think people just don't think they know someone else with name that is spelled differently and I think they just automatically spell it the way they know, I couldn't get one of my sisters surnames right for ages it's one where is it 1 of 1 letter and 2 of another or vice versa shocking but other sister never spelled my surname right either lol

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2023 19:40

@GwinCoch , I used Nia as it's a popular name and has been for decades, and yet people struggle with it for some reason. Nia, Nai, Nina, Nya? Confused

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2023 19:51

@CurlewKate , it was me.

The people who say they don't mind IME are usually the ones that have quite ordinary names.

It’s fine, it wasn’t a criticism. I’m not that into guessing the name I just found people running away with certain ideas that you hadn’t actually said, interesting!

KirstenBlest · 16/06/2023 20:07

@Rottweilermummy , I can understand people getting Aaron wrong because I know an Aaran, Aron and an Aran, and a couple of Aarons.

Names with consecutive vowels are often misspelt, so Rueben isn't that surprising, and it possibly looks more logical. Ruben and Rubin are valid spellings.

Some people will spell something like Clive as Cilve without it being a typo. It just looks careless.

I don't know why the Issac misspelling happens so much, unless you are saying is as Is-ack not Eye-zuck. Maybe it's like when people write Hariss or Phillipa.

jojo2202 · 16/06/2023 20:54

i have a sofia and people always spell it sophia or even sophie. she's nearly 13 now so am
used to it

KurlueCate, it matters to a lot of people. If people love you, then surely they'll take enough care to get your name right.

I mind when people get my name wrong because it means things like e-mails bouncing or going to someone else, or not being able to pay a cheque into my account.

@eastegg , I'm surprised that Casper/Caspar/Kasper isn't more popular

There were two in DS’s nursery, and now a different one in his year at school. Lovely name.

CurlewKate · 17/06/2023 09:22

@KirstenBlest "The people who say they don't mind IME are usually the ones that have quite ordinary names."

Really? I'm an exception that proves your rule then!
To be honest, in my experience, the people who do mind any more than a fleeting moment of irritation are often people who either have slightly screwed priorities or who want a stick to beat a particular relative with...

Scorchio84 · 17/06/2023 09:36

Actually on a lot of online forms over here & even in Ireland bizarrely, like banking etc, there mighten'd be an option to add a fadá so the name & pronunciation changes at best or means nothing at all

My DH has name which can have either 1 'n' or 2 'n's his is spelt with the 2.
He is 65 and most friends and lots of family spell it wrong.
Even if I tell them they still do it.
People are ignorant.

I wonder if it’s the same name as my husband. He was known as “double N” in one place he worked as he was very firm if people spelled it incorrectly!

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 17/06/2023 09:46

My dd is mid 20’s and has a name ending in y, we stopped correcting those that spelt it ie after a few years.
They would see me write Lily for example but would write Lilie (not the name). This included family, school teachers, friends (people who should have known better).
We ignore it, dd doesn’t care and that’s all that matters.

CheshireCats · 17/06/2023 09:51

I have had 50 odd years of people spelling my name wrong. It's fairly unusual although I've seen in mentioned on here as a name for a new baby. It has one spelling. Despite that, even family/close friends consistently spell it wrong.
2 of my DC also had their names spelled wrong by family and even by Nursery staff.
Unfortunately op, you are going to have to get used to it 🤷‍♀️

Nia is lovely, but yes equally mangled when actually it’s not hard. I have a digraph in my name and never make people even try with that!
