M&S Super Nutty Wholefood Salad catastrophe?

Helenahandkart · 25/05/2023 09:32

I LOVE M&S Super Nutty Wholefood Salad and it has been my go-to meal option for years whenever I travel. I tried to get a few yesterday prior to a business trip and it wasn’t available. Tried two other shops on the motorway - no joy.
Eventually I found a smaller version, minus the salad leaves and humous. But the humous and leaves were an integral part of the salad.
Does anyone know whether M&S have discontinued the original one? Everyone I know eats them so they’re presumably quite popular, so why would they be discontinued? There’s no mention on the internet of this disastrous development. What’s going on? Please help!

Marks and Spencer often change or discontinue anything nice. I’m still bitter about a spicy pasta bake that disappeared when I was a child. They used to do a nice chicken tikka sandwich with mint sauce- discontinued. They did a pulled pork wrap with coleslaw. They changed it and removed the coleslaw. It wasn’t as nice after that.

Occasionally things do return though- I can think of a ready meal that vanished for years and then came back.

Hopefully you’ll find something else you like just as much.

I'm still bitter about the lovely gluten free strawberry trifle they teased me with, never to be seen again!!

Tiredmum100 · 25/05/2023 21:16

I use to love the patas bravas they did, but yep discontinued I guess 🤷‍♀️

milski · 25/05/2023 21:16

I wish we could share this thread with them on twitter!
M&S used to do a big bag of spring onion crisps in the 90s. They were the best crisps I'd ever tasted. Their crisp offering is awful nowadays compared to the lofty heights of the 80s/90s.

IHeartGeneHunt · 25/05/2023 21:21

They did a chocolate fondant tart thing in a enamel tin, circa 2008/9, that was so good and the tins were brilliant. There was a lemon one too.
Their sushi isn't anywhere near as nice as it used to be either.

RIP to the chicken out square pizza, hands down the best supermarket pizza I’ve ever had 😭

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 25/05/2023 21:33

My mum worked there in the 90s and used to bring home 'waste'- leftover food that they sell to the staff at a huge discount.

Particular highlights were pre-prepared baked potatoes that you warmed in the microwave, they were filled with a creamy mushroomy cheesy sauce and were epic.

There was also a pudding called a 'plum stone cobbler'. Stewed plums topped with sweet scones. Utterly delicious.

Also agree re the chicken tikka sarnies (and I've been veggie for 25 years now)

Do they still sell corned beef crisp bakes? They were also chef's kiss

I still mourne the loss of the pret hummus sandwich.

I often think about the pret tuna nicoise wrap. I used to have it every day for my lunch.

I read something once from someone who was high up in one of the major supermarkets, or similar. It was anonymous. He said that customers always think “Why don’t they stock more of (popular dish)?” And “why did they discontinue xxxx?”. Apparently it’s because if everyone buys, say, a prawn sandwich, then all other sandwiches don’t sell. Instead of stocking more of the popular ones, they stock fewer, or none at all to encourage people to buy other stuff.

I'm trying to make this make sense

Liberté French set yogurt - not sure if they've been discontinued but haven't seen them for years and they were lush.

M&S tandoori prawn 'snack pack' with a kind of yoghurt dip. They used to be in the sandwich section, probably going back 20 years

Boots Shapers chicken tikka flat bread

Meant to say the yoghurt was with apricot.

@DameKatyDenisesClagnuts @VestPantsandSocks i will join you in a minute’s silence for the Swiss bubbly. It was wonderful…

I have remembered cardamom flavoured chocolate. I often yearn for that.

They used to do a really nice fruit compote thing in a carton, in the fridge section. I miss that

Yes! It was divine!

PrincessofWellies · 25/05/2023 22:52

Salted caramel yoghurt - gone.

JaceLancs · 25/05/2023 22:59

I found the bang bang chicken and superfood salad last week in the huge eco friendly m n s near cheshire oaks - only place in the north west though!
anyone got any info on link with costa and m n s ending - I was enjoying the m n s porridge or apple with peanut butter in my local costa as a breakfast option - now nothing

Ardiaei · 25/05/2023 23:01

They used to do a chocolate bar that was layers of dark, milk and white chocolate. It was lovely.

Yes! Was going to say this. It was quite chunky in a strip of 5 or 6 chunks. It’s the only M&S chocolate I’ve ever liked.

Also the Dutch m shaped shortbread biscuits were nicer in the 70s/80s before they started putting that horrid cheap chocolate on them.

M&S are terrible for discontinuing much-loved food items. I still miss the egg and prawn sesame seed roll they did about 20 years ago, and NOW bars.

Ooooh yes I had forgotten that! When pg it was a guaranteed way to errrm make you go! And tasty to boot (tho I wasn't supposed to eat prawns when pg but hey).

I love this thread. I don't go to M&S very often now but I be they no longer make the individual lemon mousse dessert on a crunchy ginger biscuit base that I used to love...

SarahAndQuack · 25/05/2023 23:15

Oh, no! I lived off that nutty wholefood salad when DP was in labour/DD was newborn - we were in for ages and it was my go-to thing. I didn't fancy it for a years after that but saw one a while back and thought maybe it'd taste good again. Too late!

The one I miss is a delicious quiche they did in about 2004 - I think it was red onions and goats' cheese, maybe with balsamic vinegar? But it was so good! My godmother used to send me M&S vouchers when I was a student, with instructions to spend them on treat food.

I will have to take serious action if they every do away with their lovely beef and horseradish sandwich. Yum! I must admit it'd be better on brown bread with a bit of chew to it (it's on a soft white bread), but the beef and horseradish is to die for.

hermansherman · 25/05/2023 23:29

Battenberg biscuits. They were unreal. I still search for them now hoping they will one day return 😭

ALongHardWinter · 25/05/2023 23:32

Over the years,I have found that M and S have form for discontinuing foods that I've taken a liking to. Among the ones that they've stopped doing are kedgeree, haddock lasagne, turkey and coleslaw sandwiches, rice and mushroom salad and cheese scones. I just know its only a matter of time before they discontinue their Cheese Tasters. What's even more annoying is that when I've asked a member of staff about the item, they've always flatly denied that they've ever sold the damn thing! Very strange.

I loved this. Reminds me of my nana. Also a peach custard tart type thing in the bakery that was discontinued 😭

Yes!!!! It was lovely, preferably with some cream!

Holidaypls · 26/05/2023 00:19

Wtf are M&S doing. If they've taken the hummus out, that was the best part.

I used to LOVE the no chicken/no bacon pasta but they've absolutely filled it with parsley and chives and now it feels like that's all I'm eating ☹️

Clarinet1 · 26/05/2023 00:20

Also - the in store bakery section doesn’t do palmiers anymore. Tragic!
