This:

nationalconservatism.org/national-conservatism-a-statement-of-principles/

Look at the speakers;

nationalconservatism.org/natcon-uk-2023/

How can anybody who has studied any history whatsoever vote for this?

Are living in some kind of shit, TV movie about the fall of the UK?

what do you mean by this, OP? The Catholisation of society ( first think that came to my mind when I saw there was Benefiction T the end).

Isn’t a Labour MP ( Glassman? ) advocating for Catholic social thought in society ( care for the sick and the vulnerable, community centred).

Is that what national conservatism is?

JenniferBooth · 16/05/2023 14:43

They are going to try and ban abortion arent they.

JenniferBooth · 16/05/2023 14:44

They spent decades telling us ( i live in social housing) not to have kids unless we can afford them. And now they are whining when the reckoning has to be paid.

englishsparklingwine · 16/05/2023 14:45

You do get this is a totally different organisation (and mostly American based) than the Conservative Party right?

Notwavingbutsignalling · 16/05/2023 14:50

@JenniferBooth

you think? I think it will be heavily focused on establishing British values as an umbrella term for things like volunteering, Cameron’s ‘big society’, civic pride, etc. All common in European countries but not established in the same way here

user1477391263 · 16/05/2023 14:51

Well, I wasn't planning on voting for the Tories anyway.

But this isn't "The Tory Party." It's a non-party-political organization.

Yes, I just looked at the speakers. Lots of socially conservative/Red Tory types. I disagree with a lot of what they have to say (in fact I was arguing with someone on Twitter about some of this stuff earlier on). But freaking out about THIS IS DANGEROUS because someone has a different opinion to you is really weak, frankly. And nobody is going to ban abortion in the UK.

Thelnebriati · 16/05/2023 14:51

I'd be less angry about that mission statement if it wasn't for the fact the Conservatives were the ones to push for self ID and queer theory in this country. They've permitted it to take over the Civil Service, the MOD, the MOJ, the NHS and the education system.
So they've got a nerve to turn round and complain about how awful it it.

JenniferBooth · 16/05/2023 14:51

@englishsparklingwine So whats Gove doing there then

JenniferBooth · 16/05/2023 14:52

@englishsparklingwine So whats Gove doing there then

It may have some politicians in there but it's not a political party.

(And if they were, well, the Tories are going out with their tails between their legs at the next election anyway)

shropshire11 · 16/05/2023 14:53

There’s a more provocative fringe to every political movement. Unless they are advocating some kind of extreme ideology or race hate, then part of living in a civilised society is accepting others have their own points of view - and recognising that fringe opinions are just that - fringe opinions. In short, try to grow up.

They're not in government so they can't try to do anything. They can try to persuade others to ban abortion, sure. Since it isn't going to work, frankly who cares? We do have freedom of speech in this country, so anti abortion people aren't breaking any laws by being anti abortion.

SilentParrot · 16/05/2023 14:54

They've clearly got a hard on for the way Orban does things.

orangegato · 16/05/2023 14:54

This isn’t Tory policy… conservatism is not just the name of the party.. wow.

SilentParrot · 16/05/2023 14:56

Gove is there today representing the government in an official capacity, so that seems absolutely fine.

JenniferBooth · 16/05/2023 14:57

@shropshire11 Where were you three years ago when some of us were questioning the Covid restrictions. I dont recall many of the lockdown lovers being told to grow up and accept other peoples opinions. In fact threads here were removed and people were silenced. One rule for one eh

AuntieJune · 16/05/2023 14:57

The Tories will certainly lose the next election. If they lose it badly enough the party could be disbanded as the branding is so devalued. There would be lots of new groupings looking to take the place of the party. This is a bid to try to claim that ground.

Brought to you by the shits who backed Brexit, of course.

TheWhalrus · 16/05/2023 14:58

This is quite weird; thankfully I don't see the tories getting anywhere near to power at the next election and I look forward to watching the fallout between the growing lunatic fringe that actually take this right-wing nonsense seriously and the remaining centrist tories (if there are any by that point).

Notwavingbutsignalling · 16/05/2023 14:58

What did the Tories gain with queer theory? That seems to me counter productive to their logic on most things.

Division. They thrive on division, deflection and chaos.

Banning abortion might be an end goal. These people will hopefully get nowhere near power.

However, their tactics aren't to try to ban abortion but to chip away at reproductive rights - limit availability of abortion for abnormalities, for Downs Syndrome, reduce time limits etc. Find the grey areas where people might say, oh yes I agree with abortion but maybe we need to curtail that bit. And that bit. And before too long you're left with nothing.
