Look at the speakers;

How can anybody who has studied any history whatsoever vote for this?

Are living in some kind of shit, TV movie about the fall of the UK?

We do live in a democracy, people discussing views you disagree with is allowed. The way to deal with it is at the ballot box.

Piggywaspushed · 16/05/2023 17:57

I agree OP. Terrifying.

You are not being 'hysterical'. Posters don't seem to appreciate the irony there.

cooliebrown · 16/05/2023 16:12

those posters saying this is nothing to do with the Conservative Party should take note that our Home Secretary was the key-note speaker yesterday, giving a speech approved by Rishi Sunak. Also speaking were Jacob Rees-Mogg, amongst other senior Conservative MPs, as well as cabinet minister Michael Gove today.

Absolutely this. Braverman staked her claim for the leadership at this (covertly).

I’ve just read their Statement of Principals. More than a whiff of Giliad about their attitudes to god, religion, women and the family.

Given that the Tories have been in power for 13 years and the UK still has the most liberal abortion laws in Europe, I highly doubt it.

Do you really believe this nonsense? The UK is one of the least liberal countries in Europe when it comes to abortion rights. In most of the rest of Europe it's an absolute right on demand. We don't have to justify ourselves and get approval from a doctor.

Tinkerbyebye · 16/05/2023 17:58

I only glanced but what’s it got to do with the Tories! It’s a separate party

LakieLady · 16/05/2023 17:59

They've clearly got a hard on for the way Orban does things.

I know this is a serious topic, but this made me lol.

Any views?

Including fewer women going to uni so they have more babies?

That's what this is.

The whiff of fascism from some current outspoken Tory members has been discussed in various places on here. For some reason calling it out for what it is gives people the opportunity to try and bully/belittle others as hysterical.

the guy who protested JRM the other day was about to talk about this: “Common themes among fascist movementsinclude: authoritarianism, nationalism(including racial nationalism), hierarchy and elitism, and militarism. Other aspects of fascism such as its "myth of decadence", anti-egalitarianism and totalitarianism can be seen to originate from these ideas” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism_and_ideology#:~:text=Common%20themes%20among%20fascist%20movements,to%20originate%20from%20these%20ideas.

Personally I‘m driven by the instructions of the ancestors I remember every year when I wear a poppy. ‘Lest we forget’.

Their principles don’t even follow logically. They think every country should be individualistic; have its own identity etc. But they don’t want immigration. Surely if you’re going for individualistic countries, it makes more sense to allow people to migrate to countries that more closely align with their personal beliefs?

Alargeoneplease89 · 16/05/2023 17:06

And Labour would do much better especially as they can define what a woman is?

It's the Tory confusion over what a woman is that landed us in this mess. FFS, the current Tory Sectretary for Education, Gillian Keegan can't define the word "girl". And she is only the latest in a series of TWAW the Tories put in the position. Remember Justine Greening?😬

Part of the reason we're in this mess is 6 years of our children being taught genderwoo in schools.

This, things like banning abortion wouldn’t fly with the general public (or most Tory MP’s one imagines) but they are allowed to talk about it. Also bible bashers would probably find it hard to get elected. The great British public is increasingly secular so I doubt some sort of appeal to religious sentiment is going to have much impact.

They are having a chat about what they believe conservatism is, they will be shouted down by people within the Torys party who would balk at a lot of that and agree with some of it. This isn’t some sort of manifesto writing group. Some points about security and technology are probably quite reasonable.

This is how you get a bunch of people screaming at a few women meeting in a pub to talk about sex based rights. People are allowed to talk and discuss things and other people are allowed to say “er no thanks, that kind of thing isn’t my cup of tea really”. And when someone pushes an agenda at you, you say “ah fuck that I’m voting for the other person”.

I wish our society was calmer and more rational.

It is, in practice, abortion on demand. Do you know anyone who has sought an abortion in England, Scotland or Wales, for any reason, within the legal limits, and been unable to get one?

The UK is one of only two countries in Europe where you can terminate a healthy pregnancy up to 24 weeks. In most of Europe it's more like 12 or 14 weeks.

Yes we get to vote. If it’s not wanted by the public it won’t happen. And agree we are more secular not religious.

Absolutely this.

And the Tories care about winning elections. It's why they're starting to row back on all the trans nonsense. Because they can see that men in women's prisons and sports goes down like a bucket of cold sick with most people, and they have spotted an opportunity to take advantage lf Labour obliviously ploughing ahead with it because they can't read the room.

For the same reason, the Tories banning abortion isn't something that is going to happen.

Personally I prefer to worry about things that will never happen if and when I have the time and emotional bandwidth after I've worried about all the things that probably will happen. But you do you.

newnamethanks · 16/05/2023 18:30

Like Brexit. People aren't that stupid. It could never happen. Oh look! Don't relax about this. It's as bad as it sounds and quite probably worse.

Who said it could never happen?

I’d say it was a fault of the remain campaign to underestimate the strength of feeling on Brexit.

If Cameron and Remain had been more aware of the public sentiment they might not have been so assured.

It was pretty stupid to say that Brexit could never happen when it was literally being put to a public vote.

Banning abortion isn't.

Yeah, instead vote for the party that wants to end sex based rights, claims not to know what a woman is, but have made damn sure never to have one lead them and currently has a leader so fucking thick, he thinks a man can grow a cervix.
Vote for the party who introduced the GRA because they were too cowardly and backwards to introduce same sex marriage, but made sure when writing the GRA, to protect privileged men above all else and their entitlement to peerages. That’s progress people 👍

This trans shitshow happened under the Tory government. The destruction of women's rights happened under their eye.
