To think I will be judged on holiday and plane about my size?

Ykn · 25/03/2023 21:27

40 something, 5.8 tall, size 20-22, hoping to feel confident enough to wear a bikini or tankini around the pool on my coming holiday.

Would you be judging me on how I look? Thinking "I'm glad I don't look like her" and/or "what on earth does she think she looks like?"

Would you be looking over at me on the plane to see if I can fasten my seat belt? To see if I have to ask for an extender? To see me become flustered if I can't fasten my seat belt and have to ask for an extender?

Interested to hear your honest thoughts.

I wouldn’t do any of those things and don’t know anyone else that would either. I’d be too busy enjoying my own holiday. Hope you enjoy yours 😄

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/03/2023 21:29

I wouldn’t be looking at all tbh, I’d be busy focussed on getting the kids settled on the plane and enjoying time with them. You’d be surprised how little other people think about folk they don’t know. Go and enjoy a lovely sunny break.

takealettermsjones · 25/03/2023 21:31

I wouldn't notice or care, unless maybe I liked your bikini and then I'd wonder whether I was brave enough to ask you where you got it 😆 flaunt your swimsuit and enjoy your holiday!

44PumpLane · 25/03/2023 21:32

I'd be thinking nothing but "I wish I was confident enough to wear a bikini too......I envy that woman her confidence"

Squamata · 25/03/2023 21:32

I wouldn't give a damn. Get some nice shades and a cover up thing if you might want to hide a bit.

Something I like about sun holidays is being around lots of people of different shapes and sizes just hanging out and enjoying themselves

QueenBee1234 · 25/03/2023 21:33

I doubt people will notice you, they will be too busy/stressed/excited about their own holiday!!!
I am 5'10 ish and a size 20/22 and didn't need a seat belt extender and fit in the seat quite comfortably last time flew (a while ago admittedly).
I think you're making a bigger deal of this than you need to!

Slimjimtobe · 25/03/2023 21:35

You will have a great time op! I beat myself up over weight all the time but I’d say get some clothes you love and pretty accessories and enjoy yourself

FawnFrenchieMum · 25/03/2023 21:35

Abroad on holidays is the only time I’m confident enough to wear a bikini, I have honestly never noticed anyone looking.
I’m shorter than you and probably a size or two bigger. I’ve not had to ask for a seat belt extender on any plane. RyanAir was very tight but doable. The rest have been totally fine.

Nastyurtium · 25/03/2023 21:36

I sat next to a morbidly obese couple on a flight once. They were discreetly given seatbelt extenders by the stewardess as soon as they sat down. I do remember feeling a bit sorry for them as the woman in particular looked very uncomfortable throughout, and at meal-times they couldn’t use the tray table. I felt a bit guilty about disturbing them when I needed the loo as I had to practically climb over them.

At the beach I doubt I’d give anyone a second glance, outside of casual people-watching.

Upsywavy · 25/03/2023 21:37

I'd only care if your body was infringing on my plane seat to be honest! Other than that nope wouldn't be bothered.

DojaPhat · 25/03/2023 21:37

It really depends. Where are you going?

Thing is people might look, or even stare, but you have to resolve to carry yourself with confidence.

It's all very well posters saying that any cursory glance is merely either admiration or not maliciously intended but thats not always the case.

Aposterhasnoname · 25/03/2023 21:37

Wonder even give you a second glance.

SleekMamma · 25/03/2023 21:38

Totally do not care.
Have a lovely holiday and enjoy yourself!

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 21:39

I wouldn’t think anything, or even notice.

You aren’t likely to need a seat extender at your size.

gloriousmulch · 25/03/2023 21:39

I wouldn’t judge you at all, and certainly wouldn’t be looking at you on the plane. I get your stress though as have felt it myself
for similar reasons.

Loopyloooooo · 25/03/2023 21:39

TBH I wouldn't give it a second though. Except to wish I had your confidence which is what I think whenever I see anyone in a bikini! Maybe one day I'll go for it!

Are some places more judgemental than others?

I wouldn't judge, just hope you enjoy and have a fab holiday

ModerationInEverything · 25/03/2023 21:41

I wouldn't even notice you unless your bikini was a style/colour I liked.

Ykn · 25/03/2023 21:42

I've needed an extender a few times on Tui and older Easyjet planes, even when people bigger than me haven't. Guess it's all to do with seatbelt lengths and where people carry their weight.

I'd be delighted to see someone your size (& mine!) weariNg WTF they want around the pool & having a great time!

Happy people = nice people!

Have a great trip!

DanceMonster · 25/03/2023 21:43

I’d be too busy dealing with my disabled child and worrying that people were judging his noises/squeals/stimming.

Cuckoosheep · 25/03/2023 21:45

I'm ex cabin crew. Have a quick and quiet word when you board and the crew will be discrete with the belt if you need one. Make sure you're not sat in an exit row as if you need an extender you should be asked to move.

I've never judged anyone on a flight or by a pool. When I was flying for work I was too busy preflight and during the flight. As a passenger/ holiday maker by the pool when I'm with my kids I'm too worried about them especially my disabled son making sure he doesn't melt down and if not with them really grateful for the peace but at the same time wondering what mu kids are up to and if they're OK.

My point being people are usually wrapped up in themselves and their own worries or insecurities. Go and enjoy yourself, b#££#%*s to what anyone else thinks. When you're too old to do any of that you won't care, enjoy it now.

Hope you have an amazing time.

StillMedusa · 25/03/2023 21:48

I'm a size 10 and but look too old, and saggy for a bikini and I can honestly say I'd just be sightly envious that you are wearing one :) (You are a lot younger than me)
I notice people who look happy on holiday, that's about it :)

Go enjoy!

AmandaHoldensLips · 25/03/2023 21:48

I look like a King Edward potato and I wear a bikini - couldn't give a shit and if people don't like it they can look the other way. I'm 60 and totally flabulous just letting it all hang out while sucking on a giant banana daiquiri.

You go for it, girl.
