To think I will be judged on holiday and plane about my size?

Ykn · 25/03/2023 21:27

40 something, 5.8 tall, size 20-22, hoping to feel confident enough to wear a bikini or tankini around the pool on my coming holiday.

Would you be judging me on how I look? Thinking "I'm glad I don't look like her" and/or "what on earth does she think she looks like?"

Would you be looking over at me on the plane to see if I can fasten my seat belt? To see if I have to ask for an extender? To see me become flustered if I can't fasten my seat belt and have to ask for an extender?

Interested to hear your honest thoughts.

@mumyes exactly.

I've been hurt enough times to even look at others, unless they are smiley, happy, kind people.

Cantrushart · 25/03/2023 21:53

Of course there will be people who watch and judge. The same people will be watching those who are too thin or tall, or whose teeth are crooked or whose shorts or suitcase are the wrong colour. You can't change that, you can only change how that makes you feel. Decide not to care and pity them for their sad, boring lives.

GreyTS · 25/03/2023 21:53

Could not be even slightly bothered about anyone else's appearance, 100% wouldn't even notice.....as for an extender, I'm 5'3 and 50kg and I find those belts restrictive and uncomfortable. Please go and enjoy every second of your holiday, anyone who does notice or judge you has their own issues and insecurities that make them behave that way, pitiful really

Upsywavy · 25/03/2023 21:37

I'd only care if your body was infringing on my plane seat to be honest! Other than that nope wouldn't be bothered.

Same. If you were infringing on my seat space, I wouldn't be happy. Otherwise, wouldn't be bothered.

Whyisitsodifficult · 25/03/2023 22:01

Yes same here. I definitely think if this is the case then paying for two seats should be considered.

Dexy007 · 25/03/2023 22:03

I wouldn’t give a damn what you looked like or what you were wearing at the pool! But please make sure you are sitting with your own family on the plane (ie prebook your seats). It’s not fair to sit next to a stranger if you’re going to encroach on their space, it can be physically uncomfortable if you’re sitting next to a large person unwillingly.

OneFrenchEgg · 25/03/2023 22:03

Tbh honest there are so many overweight people that I wouldn't really register you as standing out.

Livelovebehappy · 25/03/2023 22:04

I wouldn’t look, nor would i judge. But others may do. That’s the human race for you, some people will most definitely stare, usually because they aren’t nice, or that they feel sorry for you or might wonder why you’re so big. Unfortunately, their reactions aren’t anything you can control, but you just have to try and have the confidence to be who you want to be.

dementedpixie · 25/03/2023 22:05

I'm 5'6" and wear a 20/22 and wear a bikini on holiday. Have never needed a seat extender either.

user146539089 · 25/03/2023 22:05

I’m size 14. I’m too busy worrying what I look like to worry about other people’s appearance.

Aisle seat booked a while back. Wouldn't dream of not pre booking.

This. You might not feel great wearing a bikini if you think (know?) people will judge.

I'll be honest I wouldn't want to sit next to you on the plane... but otherwise don't notice what other women are doing/wearing unless it's something completely outlandish

Rewis · 25/03/2023 22:11

I just came back from a package holiday in the canaries. And I can assure you that there were people of all shapes and sizes! Bikinis, one pieces, speedos, shorts, topless.

Changemaname1 · 25/03/2023 22:13

I wouldn’t judge or give a fuck about you or anyone else and there appearance

however I agree with another poster about the seat space infringement , and it not like I’d even be judging you it’s just flying is uncomfortable enough as it is and when people are moving into my already tiny seat space ( for whatever reason ) it fills me with rage

LubaLuca · 25/03/2023 22:13

I think the only people who'll give you any thoughts will be those you're sitting near to on the plane ie in the same row. I was on a flight once when morbidly obese twins boarded and I have to admit I was really hoping they didn't sit down in my row. They'd actually booked two seats each either side of the aisle so there was no impact on anyone else's comfort, just a bit of fuss when the person near the window needed to get out.

I can't picture how big a person is from dress size, but presumably you're not so large that you'll be partly in somebody else's space or that you require two seats.

SeenYourArse · 25/03/2023 22:14

Ok I’m a similar size to you and fly long haul three times a year (return so 6 times total) I have never…. Needed a seatbelt extender or infringed on my neighbours seat or felt self conscious about others looking at me? Why would they? I’m a normal human there are plenty of smaller and bigger people than me 🤷‍♀️ I also don’t wear a bikini though! My tummy is where I carry my weight so I’d never feel comfortable showing that area, but I feel happy and comfortable in a swimsuit or tankini.

lipstickwoman · 25/03/2023 22:16

I don't care how big you are or what you wear. Like others though I would care if you made my journey less comfortable.

mellicauli · 25/03/2023 22:17

Honestly, most people are too busy thinking about themselves to think about you in this kind of detail. Last time you were in a public place (bus/train/cinema), what did you think about the person sat next to you? Absolutely nothing, I bet!

AnyoneElse1982 · 25/03/2023 22:18

Please don’t care about others, please try enjoy your holiday OP

RainLover · 25/03/2023 22:20

First up need to say that I honestly have no idea what any dress size other than my own looks like, so can’t really picture what “size 20” is, however.. on a plane, I only care about someone else’s size if it directly impacts my seat (ie someone that really needed 2 seats squeezed in next to me on a long haul flight was not ideal for either of us). On the beach, I cannot express how much I LOVE seeing all different body shapes and sizes, faces with big smiles and generally people having a great time. It’s my favourite thing and no, I wouldn’t be judging you or anyone else, just enjoying the view of happiness. God that sounds cheesy but I love it and need to book a holiday! Enjoy it OP x

Obki · 25/03/2023 22:20

I’ve had too many holidays with people staring because we are different to most other people, so I would hate for anyone to feel uncomfortable because of me. My mum is size 20 and my fave adult in the world, so I’d not even notice.

M103 · 25/03/2023 22:22

No, I wouldn't notice you at all. I would be too busy enjoying my own holiday!

OneFrenchEgg · 25/03/2023 22:03

Me neither.
but, please, for your own health think about losing weight.

smooththecat · 25/03/2023 22:23

I don’t give a crap about whatever anyone looks like on holiday. Last year I looked at all the men (I used to always look at women) and saw they were mostly fat, as fat if not fatter than the women. Women care so much and men give women a hard time but the truth is right there on the beach, and on the paunch.
