Red rose to all women at work?

Tuilpmouse · 14/02/2023 23:09

So, a guy a work decided to bring in a bunch of around 20 red roses and proceed to give one to each woman in the office for Valentines Day.

AIBU to think this is a bit weird and creepy; or is it a kind and generous gesture?

A lovely thing to do

Wheredidtheselotapego · 14/02/2023 23:10

Creepy

SpinningFloppa · 14/02/2023 23:11

I think it’s fine, I remember tescos workers near me giving out roses to women one year (didn’t giving any to men)

LandlubbingKraken · 14/02/2023 23:11

I wouldn't particularly like it either - it's a workplace.

Lunabetty · 14/02/2023 23:11

I think it's a nice gesture

Stompythedinosaur · 14/02/2023 23:12

Yuck, definitely creepy.

elizabethdraper · 14/02/2023 23:12

Weird and creepy

IcanandIwill · 14/02/2023 23:12

I think its lovely. Of course all depends on the person and how they behave day to day.

OldTinHat · 14/02/2023 23:12

That's a sweet, kind thing to do. How lovely.

Divebar2021 · 14/02/2023 23:13

Depends on the man surely? There will be funny charming men who could get away with that and men who could not!

MojoMoon · 14/02/2023 23:13

It is a bit of a thing on women's day in some parts of Eastern Europe to give flowers to all the women in your life, including close work colleagues.
Russian colleagues did that for us in a previous job.

But not on valentine's day.

holierthanthou73 · 14/02/2023 23:13

Just a nice gesture

bussteward · 14/02/2023 23:14

Creepy. May as well give them all a red flag.

edwinbear · 14/02/2023 23:14

I’d not like it either. I’m not really into VD anyway, but it’s primarily about romantic relationships is it? Doesn’t sit well with me in a professional environment. That said, I’m sure he had good intentions.

CrapBucket · 14/02/2023 23:14

If any of the men at my place did this I would be very uncomfortable.

It sounds very Swiss Tony.

NoDairyNoProblem · 14/02/2023 23:17

I would assume it was intended with kindness unless he’s usually a first grade creep.

A lovely gentleman was handing out pink roses to all the ladies and a few men outside the Beatson Hospital earlier today. He was a former patient and thought it might brighten up the day for some. I accepted mine with the kindness I assumed it was intended and thanked him.

ConfusedNT · 14/02/2023 23:18

I wouldn't like it for all sorts of reasons but unless the guy was usually creepy or made me uncomfortable I would probably try to assume he was being nice.

I'm not a massive fan of being a 'female colleague' with different treatment rather than just a 'colleague' to be honest.

Reminds me of a male manager I had who rated job interviews for men on how good they were and for women on a combination of how good they were and how pretty they were.

youshouldnthaveasked · 14/02/2023 23:19

It would depend on how this person usually behaves? Is he a creep or a generous friendly person

Bubblebubblebah · 14/02/2023 23:19

Carnations and tea towels from employers 😂

QueSyrahSyrah · 14/02/2023 23:19

Only 3 Men in my office and I can't imagine any of them doing it, but I couldn't get worked up if they did.

As a PP said above, very common in some nationalities for Women's Day. A Romanian friend receives flowers from her ex-husband every Women's Day (he also sends them to his Mum and Sisters, without fail).

LazyDaisy89 · 14/02/2023 23:22

That’s so lovely 🥹

LazyDaisy89 · 14/02/2023 23:24

Also yes, is he British? A lot of my non-British friends celebrate Valentines Day and Women’s Day with flowers to the women they know - I’m a teacher abroad and I get flowers from my male students and their parents as well as from male colleagues. It seems to be a thing in parts of Europe and parts of Asia.

LexMitior · 14/02/2023 23:26

A nice gesture

summerinthebigcity · 14/02/2023 23:27

I would find it not so much creepy as inappropriate and patronising. For one thing, I’m lesbian.

LexMitior · 14/02/2023 23:27

Oh come on you can be lesbian and like flowers
