Deliveroo Driver knocked at my door asking for money.

A couple of hours ago there was a knock at my front door so as it’s already dark by then I asked who it was and he said your delivery driver so I opened it as I was expecting a Amazon delivery and I was shocked to see a Deliveroo driver.I recognised him as a driver who has delivered to me on numerous occasions. He said he been waiting for a order from me but none had come and could I help him out with any spare change.
I was speechless to say the least and said No and shut the door and have been in shock for the last few hours thinking did that just happen.
To say it’s freaked me out is a understatement and I would appreciate any advice.
Thank You

Contact whoever he usually delivers to you for and tell them. Don't order from them again. Perhaps report it to police on non emergency in case he is targeting people he thinks are vulnerable.

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 05/02/2023 20:54

So he'd been waiting for you to place an order so he could come to your house and ask you for money, and as you hadn't he came to your house and asked anyway? Is that right?
Utterly bizarre behaviour. You should report him!

AngelDelightUK · 05/02/2023 20:54

Had you done an order?

MrsBunnyEars · 05/02/2023 20:55

Not cool! I’d report to Deliveroo at a minimum.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/02/2023 20:55

Id contact deliveroo, not who he delivers food from, they've no control over that!

Would perhaps try to get his name if you can, from wherever, but definitely deliveroo and the police.

No, I think more likely he'd been hoping she'd order so he'd get the job and get paid and perhaps get a tip... but then if he's desperate enough to do this, who knows!

ShakespearesBlister · 05/02/2023 20:56

He's obviously not getting any work. Wonder why?

avamiah · 05/02/2023 20:59

@WiddlinDiddlin ,
yes I always give the drivers a cash tip but only a couple of pounds and the maximum £5 but that was over the Christmas period .

It really is, yes.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 21:07

I just want to add that he was in his late 50’s, early 60’s and uses a bike so I have probably always tipped him a few pounds trying to be nice.
Well it shows you what being nice does .

These people do earn absolute pennies, I wonder if he was just desperate. Wildly inappropriate of course but I do feel sorry for them.

user1471453601 · 05/02/2023 21:10

And do you wonder, at all, why someone would be asking you for spare change?

ShakespearesBlister · 05/02/2023 21:11

It sounds like he's not getting much work and is in trouble with money, but this isn't the way to deal with it and it's not your problem. He can't approach customers begging like that.

I can't help feel sorry for people who do things like this and wonder how desperate they must be.
Not condoning it, and it would of freaked me out too.

Natty13 · 05/02/2023 21:13

God this made me really sad and very grateful that I'm not in that situation.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 21:14

@user1471453601 , they don’t earn much and are on bikes in all sorts of bad weather so I was being kind giving a couple of pounds tip.

I'm sorry but if the bloke who usually delivers my Indian takeaway knocked on my door begging for money I wouldn't oblige. Mainly because it increases the likelihood of repeat visits.

Exactly, I would be frightened it became a regular thing.

avamiah · 05/02/2023 21:19

@ShakespearesBlister ,
yes I order from the same Chinese takeaway and they have their own delivery drivers and usually the same guy comes and I’ll give him a £2 but he has never come knocking asking for money .
Its just the strangest thing ever and it unnerved a bit.

Well….yes. Just as my hairdresser doesn’t hunt me down if I don’t make another appointment, nor does the taxi company I occasionally use if I don’t book a taxi etc etc.
