Deliveroo Driver knocked at my door asking for money.

A couple of hours ago there was a knock at my front door so as it’s already dark by then I asked who it was and he said your delivery driver so I opened it as I was expecting a Amazon delivery and I was shocked to see a Deliveroo driver.I recognised him as a driver who has delivered to me on numerous occasions. He said he been waiting for a order from me but none had come and could I help him out with any spare change.
I was speechless to say the least and said No and shut the door and have been in shock for the last few hours thinking did that just happen.
To say it’s freaked me out is a understatement and I would appreciate any advice.
Thank You

What's so creepy is that he targets a customer who knows his face so is more likely to open the door and trust him.

Notify the police, with the time and his description. It might help ID him if you can remember the last time your ordered and he delivered.

StressedToTheMaxxx · 05/02/2023 23:19

He must be absolutely desperate... not saying it's OK what he did, but yeah, times must be very tough.

Sirius3030 · 05/02/2023 22:52

Absolutely. Call the police at the very least.

Thank fuck for that. I was beginning to think I was the only one that understood @TheHateIsNotGood was being sarcastic.

KAYMACK · 05/02/2023 23:41

Personally, I feel very sorry for the driver.

You do not know what goes on behind closed doors or in other people's lives.

Mylittlesandwich · 05/02/2023 23:43

Tipping in cash is not that unusual, certainly where I am. I did a lot of delivery driving during lockdown. I'm not sure if it's the same for Deliveroo but on just eat your actual phone number isn't given to drivers. If you need to speak to a customer it goes through their systems so the company have your number not the individual driver. Definitely report to deliveroo as they would not want drivers behaving like that. I know times are tough but you can guarantee I haven't gone round regular customers asking them for money. That would be weird.

@2bazookas
I had a knock at my front door early evening but it was dark so I asked who it was and he said “delivery driver”. I was expecting a Amazon delivery which was already out for delivery so I opened the door.

YANBU OP, I do feel sorry for him but I think you should report to Deliveroo. Some people (particularly lone women!) May feel worried or pressured to give money.

I agree. A more vulnerable or scared person living also might have felt they can’t say no even if they wanted to.

What the hell is wrong with you? You are shaming someone for feeling uncomfortable for a man accosting her at her door and asking for money. She has no obligation to pay more than she did for the food she got delivered by him on a previous date. The issue isn’t a consumer issue. Don’t put this on the OP for fucks sake.

LeaveIt · 05/02/2023 23:53

It has never occurred to me to tip the bar staff in a pub if I’m buying a round of drinks.

Notatallanamechange · 05/02/2023 23:54

Also, this man is using information from Deliveroo to go to addresses where he knows there’s enough money for takeaways, so maybe extra cash. It’s completely inappropriate! We can feel sorry for the man but that makes nothing about this even remotely okay. It’s downright wrong.

Noonesperfect · 06/02/2023 00:09

I would find this really intimidating OP. I feel for you.

avamiah · 06/02/2023 00:17

@LeaveIt ,
No I agree with you but I was talking about my local pub which has been my local for over 11 years. When I say pub I mean Pub/Restaurant were I have had eaten in on so many occasions I have lost track. The same staff have been there for at least 10 years and they are all lovely genuine people .

I was just so shocked and lost for words and after I closed the door I had to sit down.

It's totally inappropriate to do this. There are lots of 'poor' people and they don't behave this way.
You do have a point though if you're suggesting we should be questioning why he has resorted to this. There is something badly wrong with 'the system'......and we're all part of it.

Blagdoon · 06/02/2023 00:52

It isn't a crime to knock on strangers doors and ask for money
Fairly certain it is. Firstly GDPR, he can’t use private info from Deliveroo to target people to beg money from. Secondly people can’t go begging door to door, it’s harassment.

Wtf are you on about? Is that really the way to go about it? Randomly knocking customers doors to ask for money?

OldFan · 06/02/2023 01:39

I'm fairly poor and I've never begged and never will. Especially knocking on random doors.

ensayers · 06/02/2023 01:56

I'm a deliveroo driver too. Tippers are rare. Maybe 1 in 20 do it and it's surprising if more than £2.
If you always order from the same place at the same time each week then maybe he was hanging around near the pickup, hoping that he would be allocated your job? Chancing his luck I guess. Very cheeky to come knocking at your door!
Don't believe everything you read in the press, deliveroo is not necessarily low paid if you know what you're doing and there are a lot of good points to the job, mainly around freedom to work as many or as few hours as I choose. Including just eat and ubereats, last year I took nearly £30k. That's better than my previous job, and no boss!

blubberball · 06/02/2023 03:13

This would freak me out too

@WhereIsMumHiding3 ,
And it’s put me off using Deliveroo again as I’m thinking he’s waiting for my address to pop up .
But what are the odds of that as there are hundreds of Deliveroo drivers so he surely wouldn’t be waiting for me ?

When I worked for Deliveroo, at the point of accepting the job you could only see the collection point not the delivery address. It used to offer the job to the nearest free person so I did learn to lurk outside Wagamama between jobs as their customers tipped better than KFC and orders didn't tend to involve 2L drinks to carry! Cash tips were rare enough to be memorable. Tips on the app only displayed when you got paid so you couldn't say thank you or try to switch off the grumpy just biked a party bucket up a big hill for no tip face! Deliveroo could easily find who has done your delivery on a certain date. The issue will probably be finding someone to speak to but they are probably more forthcoming to customers than employees.

TrickyD · 06/02/2023 06:30

Slightly off topic but someone mentioned Amazon deliveries. I don’t tip them, we rarely actually see them unless it is a ‘sign for’ item like booze. Items are either through the letterbox or into a bin on the porch.
What do others do? I always fill in the feedback saying yes delivery was great. Does this help the driver?

Catspyjamas17 · 06/02/2023 06:33

I would report him in a heartbeat. It's really not on.

You'd be lucky to get time to tip. Most of them are already running down the street by the time you get to the door!

Sisisimone · 06/02/2023 09:19

If he's delivered to you numerous times it's likely he's targeted you, not only because he knows you have cash in the house, but also because you are a single woman. You were strong enough to shut the door in his face but other more vulnerable people he targets may not be, and I doubt you are the only one. You need to report this, at least to deliveroo and I can't believe you haven't already tbh

Catspyjamas17 · 06/02/2023 10:01

I always tip on the app.
